Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Paradox Basin is a geologic area in southeastern Utah defined by the location of Pennsylvanian salt deposits. The Basin is bounded by the Uncompahgre Uplift to the east and north, the San Rafael Swell, the Circle Cliffs Uplift and the Monument Upwarp to the west, and the Defiance-Zuni Uplift and the Four Corners Platform to the south. The basin is divided into two principal tectonic subprovinces - the Paradox Fold and Fault belt to the north and the Blanding Basin to the south. The Fold and Fault Belt is an area of dominantly northwest-trending salt-cored anticlinal structures. These structures are rooted in the Precambrian basement and have influenced the stratigraphy (deposition) and structure (tectonics) of the Mississippian, Pennsylvanian, and younger formations deposited across them. The Blanding Basin was also a structural low during Pennsylvanian time. It is primarily an area of carbonate-organic mound (bioherm and bioclastic mound) deposition, which forms the most common type of reservoir for petroleum found in the region. This study includes an individual oil and gas field report and a presentation of the regional structure. Sixty-three individual petroleum fields were identified in the Utah portion of the Paradox Basin, and each are represented by data outlining the nature of the petroleum reservoir, along with its geology, structure, and location. The majority of the fields are located in the Blanding Basin subprovince. The regional structure is represented by a structure map of the Ismay zone of the Paradox Formation (Plate 1), elevation at which first salt is encountered in the Paradox Formation (Plate 2), and an isopach map of the salt bed interval in the Paradox Formation (Plate 3). The Ismay Member was chosen to be a representative oil horizon of the Paradox Basin and illustrates the predominant tectonic structures as well as the subtle petroleum related structures. The isopach map of the salt bed interval determines the evaporite boundary in the Basin and illustrates the fold and fault subprovince and corresponding structures. 162 pages + 4 plates

Book excerpt: A companion to The Western San Juan Mountains (originally published in 1996), The Eastern San Juan Mountains details the physical environment, biological communities, human history, and points of interest in this rich and diverse mountain system. A natural division between the eastern and western slopes of the San Juans is the north-south line that runs approximately through Lake City, south of the crossing of the Piedra River by US Highway 160. In this super guidebook, twenty-seven contributors--all experts in their fields--artfully bring the geology, hydrology, animal and plant life, human histories, and travel routes of these eastern slopes to life. Designed to inform researchers, educators, and students about the region's complex systems, The Eastern San Juan Mountains also serves as an informative guidebook to accompany visitors along their travels on the Silver Thread National Scenic Byway, which stretches between South Fork and Lake City. The Eastern San Juan Mountains deserves a place next to The Western San Juan Mountains on the bookshelf of every naturalist, researcher, resident, educator, student, and tourist seeking a greater understanding of this marvelous place and its history.

Book excerpt: Bridging the gap in expertise between coal and coalbed gas, subfields in which opportunities for cross training have been nonexistent, Coal and Coalbed Gas sets the standard for publishing in these areas. This book treats coal and coalbed gas as mutually inclusive commodities in terms of their interrelated origin, accumulation, composition, distribution, generation, and development, providing a balanced understanding of this energy mix. Currently considered a non-renewable energy resource, coalbed gas, or coalbed methane, is a form of natural gas extracted from coal beds. In recent years, countries have begun to seek and exploit coal for its clean gas energy in an effort to alleviate environmental issues that come with coal use, making a book on this topic particularly timely. This volume takes into account processes of coalification, gasification, and storage and reservoir characterization and evaluation and looks at water management and environmental impacts as well. - Covers environmental issues in the development of coalbed gas - Includes case studies, field guides and data, examples, and analytical procedures from previous studies and investigations - Accessible by a large multidisciplinary market by one of the world's foremost experts on the topic

Book excerpt: Through a remarkable combination of intellect, self-confidence, engaging humility, and prodigious output of published work, William R. Dickinson influenced and challenged three generations of sedimentary geologists, igneous petrologists, tectonicists, sandstone petrologists, archaeologists, and other geoscientists. A key figure in the plate-tectonic revolution of the 1960s and 1970s, he explained how the distribution of sediments on Earth's surface could be traced to tectonic processes, and is widely recognized as a founder of modern sedimentary basin analysis. This volume consists of 31 chapters related to Dickinson's research interests; many of the authors are his former students, their students, and their students' students, demonstrating his continuing profound influence. The papers in this volume are an impressive tribute to the depth and breadth of Bill Dickinson's contributions to the geosciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The famous bone beds of the Morrison Formation, formed one hundred and fifty million years ago and running from Wyoming down through the red rock region of the American Southwest, have yielded one of the most complete pictures of any ancient vertebrate ecosystem in the world. Jurassic West, Second Edition tells the story of the life of this ancient world as scientists have so far been able to reconstruct it. Aimed at the general reader, Jurassic West, Second Edition recounts the discovery of many important Late Jurassic dinosaurs such as Apatosaurus, Allosaurus, and Stegosaurus. But dinosaurs compose barely a third of the more than 90 types of vertebrates known from the formation, which include crocodiles and turtles, frogs and salamanders, dinosaurs and mammals, clams and snails, and ginkgoes, ferns, and conifers. Featuring nearly all new illustrations, the second edition of this classic work includes new taxa named since 2007, updates to the naming and classifications of some old taxa, and expanded sections on numerous aspects of Morrison Formation paleontology and geology.
