Book Synopsis Natural Environment and Culture in the Mediterranean Region by : Georges Cravins
Download or read book Natural Environment and Culture in the Mediterranean Region written by Georges Cravins and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05-05 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The largest of the world's five Mediterranean-climate regions and one of the largest archipelagos in the world, the Mediterranean Basin is located at the intersection of two major landmasses, Eurasia and Africa, which contributes to its cultural and high biodiversity. Although much of the hotspot was once covered by a dense cover of forests, the Basin has experienced intensive human development and impact on its ecosystems for at least 8000 years, significantly longer than any other hotspot. The greatest impacts have been deforestation, habitat fragmentation, intensive grazing and fires, and infrastructure development, especially on the coast, which have distinctly altered the landscape. The agricultural lands, evergreen woodlands and maquis habitats dominating the basin are the result of these disturbances over several millennia. Many of the endemic species are narrow endemics, being confined to very small areas, and thus are extremely vulnerable to the anthropogenic pressures. Probably more species have gone extinct here than in any other hotspot. At present approximately 300 million people live here and water shortages and desertification will be the serious problems in the near future. Tourism is placing a significant pressure on the coastal ecosystems. The construction of infrastructure and the direct impacts of people using and trampling sensitive dune ecosystems remains a key threat to coastal areas. In view of the valuable natural heritage there is a great need for weighing our ecological impact in order to achieve a balance between biodiversity conservation and human development and above all, how to maintain traditional rural livelihoods in a way that benefits biodiversity. The changes in the atmosphere, geomorphological processes, and most natural cycles involving a biomass of any substantial size denote the arrival of a new geological period the "Anthropocene". We the humans are actively changing the overall conditions of our existence by terraforming the earth, changing the overall patterns of basic life systems in the process of remaking our specific contexts, not least to supposedly secure our modes of life. This book is thus synthesizing knowledge from many disciplines to throw some light on the unpredictability of forthcoming changes.
Book Synopsis Geological Development of Anatolia and the Easternmost Mediterranean Region by : A. H. F. Robertson
Download or read book Geological Development of Anatolia and the Easternmost Mediterranean Region written by A. H. F. Robertson and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2013 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anatolia and the easternmost Mediterranean region, especially Turkey, Cyprus and northern Syria, represent an excellent natural laboratory for the study of fundamental geological processes (e.g. rifting, seafloor spreading, ophiolite genesis and emplacement, subduction, exhumation and collision). Their interaction has created an intriguing array of deep-sea basins, microcontinents and suture zones. The volume's 22 papers include a large amount of new field-based information (much of it multidisciplinary and the product of teamwork). After an overview, the volume is divided into four sections: Late Palaeozoic--Early Cenozoic of the Pontides (northern Turkey); Late Palaeozoic--Early Cenozoic of the Taurides--Anatolides (central and southern Turkey); Late Cretaceous--Pliocene sedimentary basins and structural development (central Anatolia to the Mediterranean); Late Miocene--Recent Neotectonics (southern Turkey, Cyprus and northern Syria). The volume will interest numerous academic researchers, those concerned with resources (e.g. hydrocarbons; mineral deposits) and also hazards (e.g. earthquakes), as well as advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students -- P. 4 of cover.

Book Synopsis Mineral Resources of Turkey by : Franco Pirajno
Download or read book Mineral Resources of Turkey written by Franco Pirajno and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-21 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book furnishes detailed information about Turkey's existing mineral resources, besides providing concepts and ideas which may help the search for potential mineral resources in the future. It is a first book in the English-language international literature on mineral resources of Turkey and it is aimed at economic geologists, mining engineers, and mining investors, as well as graduate and undergraduate students. This work focuses mainly on a range of mineral systems and related geological features throughout Turkey. Taking into account the lack of international literature on these resources, a considerable portion of the book explains the geological context of the region and the settings in which the mineral resources occur. The genetic characteristics of these mineral resources are emphasized and important information is also presented on their economic aspects. All chapter contributions are prepared by researchers and professional geologists.

Book Synopsis A Global Synthesis of the Ordovician System: Part 2 by : T. Servais
Download or read book A Global Synthesis of the Ordovician System: Part 2 written by T. Servais and published by Geological Society of London Special Publications. This book was released on 2023-06-08 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ordovician was one of the longest of the geological periods, characterized by major magmatic and tectonic activity, an immense biodiversification, swings in climate and sea levels, and the first Phanerozoic mass extinction. ‘A Global Synthesis of the Ordovician System’ is presented in two volumes in The Geological Society, Special Publications. Whereas the first volume (SP532) concentrates on general aspects and a synthesis of the Ordovician geology of Europe, this volume (SP533) includes reviews of Ordovician successions of most other parts of the world. The classic successions of the Ordovician basins of North America are presented, as well as those of China where several of the Ordovician Global Boundary Stratotype Sections and Points are defined. The volume also includes syntheses of the Ordovician geology of Africa, South America, most regions of Asia from the Near to the Far East along with Central Asia, as well as Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica.

Book Synopsis European Lithosphere Dynamics by : D. G. Gee
Download or read book European Lithosphere Dynamics written by D. G. Gee and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2006 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe provides an outstanding field laboratory for studying lithospheric processes through time, for tracing the tectonic evolution of crust and mantle from the present far back into the early Precambrian. Two things are particularly striking: the importance of plate tectonics during the Phanerozoic and through the Proterozic into the Archeaen, and the significance of tectonic inheritance, older structures and rheologies guiding the younger evolution. 'European Lithosphere Dynamics' grew out of a major European Science Foundation programme, EUROPROBE, with participation of many hundreds of Earth scientists from all over Europe. The main research activities focused on specific target areas and involved integration of geological, geophysical and geochemical methods. Defining surface-depth relationships was a prerequisite for interpretation of the processes, present and past, responsible for the formation of the lithosphere.
Book Synopsis The Geological Evolution of the Eastern Mediterranean by : J. E. Dixon
Download or read book The Geological Evolution of the Eastern Mediterranean written by J. E. Dixon and published by Blackwell Science. This book was released on 1984 with total page 840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume includes 61 papers from a conference held in Edinburgh in September 1982 to consider all aspects of geology relevant to the tectonic evolution of the Eastern Mediterranean. The book is organised in 5 sections by age of events discussed and by area within this framework. The first is concerned with early Mesozoic events linked to ocean closure and so by implication deals with the fate of the Palaeozoic Tethys or Palaeotethys. Later sections deal with events following the birth and growth of wholly Mesozoic ocean basins of the Neotethys.
