Book Synopsis Roadside Geology of Northern and Central California by : David D. Alt
Download or read book Roadside Geology of Northern and Central California written by David D. Alt and published by Roadside Geology. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California's geology makes headlines when faults shift, volcanoes puff steam, and coastal bluffs fall into the sea. This book explores the state's recent rumblings and tremulous past with the aid of full color illustrations. Photographs showcase multihued rock, from red chert and green serpentinite to blue schist and gray granite. The geologic information, particularly for the Klamath Mountains, Modoc Plateau, and northern Sierra Nevada, has been updated to reflect new geologic understanding of these complex areas. Features detailed, easy to read color geologic road maps based on the 2010 Geologic Map of California.

This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Franciscan subduction complex formed a long-lived accretionary wedge of Late Jurassic through Oligocene age that fringed the western edge of the North American Cordillera. This volume summarizes absolute finite-strain data from the Franciscan subduction complex and brittle strain data from important faults in and above this complex. Because the Franciscan is generally considered a prototypical sediment-rich subduction complex, its tectonic evolution is important for understanding convergent plate margins, and the results outlined in this volume may have broad implications for other subduction-zone settings."--pub. desc.
Book Synopsis Mesozoic Assembly of the North American Cordillera by : Robert S. Hildebrand
Download or read book Mesozoic Assembly of the North American Cordillera written by Robert S. Hildebrand and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this well-illustrated book, Hildebrand expands upon his model for the development of the North American Cordillera detailed in Special paper 457. Starting with an overview of Cordilleran geology he goes on to provide an in depth look at how the Rubian ribbon continent was assembled. He integrates the complex geology of the Cordillera into an actualistic model involving arc magmatism, arc-continent collision, slab failure magmatism, and transcurrent motion in both Rubia and the western North American margin. While much of the focus is on the assembly of the Rubian ribbon continent, Hildebrand explores its interactions with North America during the Sevier and Laramide events and concludes that North America was the lower plate in both"--Provided by publisher.

Book Synopsis Nearshore Marine Paleoclimatic Regions, Increasing Zoogeographic Provinciality, Molluscan Extinctions, and Paleoshorelines, California by : Clarence A. Hall
Download or read book Nearshore Marine Paleoclimatic Regions, Increasing Zoogeographic Provinciality, Molluscan Extinctions, and Paleoshorelines, California written by Clarence A. Hall and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2002 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 3000 middle and late Cenozoic nearshore marine molluscan taxa from western California are assigned to six time periods, spanning ~25 m.y. In this interdisciplinary study, western California is palinspastically restored for each of the time periods by backsliding and back-rotating large fault blocks or crustal units. Marine fossil assemblages are assigned to nearshore paleoclimatic regions or water masses within palinspastically restored California. In addition, this volume reveals positive feedback mechanisms between paleolatitudinal changes in sea-surface paleotemperature gradients and changes in the diversity of marine mollusks along the California coast through time; defines "equable" based effective temperatures; and analyzes extinction rates among macroinvertebrate marine taxa from coastal California and the possible causes of these extinctions. The late Paleogene to Neogene faunas reflect an increase in faunal diversity related to strengthened temperature gradients, greater extremes in sea-surface temperatures, reduction in temperateness, and the development of an embayed California coastline.
