Book Synopsis The Stone of Life by : David Peacock
Download or read book The Stone of Life written by David Peacock and published by Southampton Monographs in Arch. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the archaeology querns and mills, simple stone instruments which are vital to survival in a society which adopts bread as its staple. They become the 'stones of life', an essential ingredient in the subsistence strategy of settled agriculturalists. It might be expected that as querns and mills are commonplace in archaeology, they would be key artefacts, studied exhaustively. Alas, this is far from the case. They have been woefully neglected, although in the last decade there has been burgeoning interest throughout much of Europe and because of this, it is timely to survey the subject, adopting a broad viewpoint. A study on this scale has not been attempted since the late nineteenth century when Bennett and Elton published their magisterial work on the History of corn milling. The author is Emeritus Professor of Archaeology at the University of Southampton and a Fellow of the Societies of Antiquaries. He was awarded the Kenyon Medal of the British Academy in 2011 and the Pommerance Medal of the Archaeological Institute of America in 2012. He has had a lifelong interest in querns and mills on which he has published widely. His work includes the discovery of key mill quarries in the Mediterranean - Orvieto in Umbria and Mulargia in Sardinia, while in Britain the Lodsworth quarries remain the only ones to be found by a deliberate search strategy. The reader will be grateful to Chris Green, also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, for the clear and elegant illustrations which enhance the book and elucidate the text.
Download or read book Tafilet written by Walter Harris and published by . This book was released on 1895 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1895, this book recounts the author's 1893 expedition to the Tafilet oasis in Morocco, one of the largest oases in the world. Previously largely inaccessible (before the invention of the motor car it was at least 10 days' journey south of Fez across the Atlas mountains and the Sahara), Harris took advantage of the Sultan of Morocco Mulai el Hassen's decision to pay a visit to the oasis during the autumn of that year. Throughout the book the author describes in great detail the places he visited and the people he met along the way. There are detailed descriptions of Marrakesh and the villages of the Atlas Mountains, as well as ruminations on the differences between the Arabs and the Berber tribes, and the situation of the Jews. Crossing the desert, Harris reached the Sultan's camp at the edge of the oasis, and there follows a detailed description of the activities of the Sultan and his retinue, their dealings with the troublesome tribes of the area, and accounts of the history, geography and people of Tafilet. The book concludes with the author's return journey to the north, and an account of the events following the Sultan's own return from the oasis and his subsequent death. Painting as it does a vivid picture of the state of Morocco at the very end of the 19th century, Walter B. Harris's Tafilet is sure to be of great interest to all those fascinated by the history of this unique and diverse North African country.
Book Synopsis The Beaker People by : Mike Parker Pearson
Download or read book The Beaker People written by Mike Parker Pearson and published by Prehistoric Society Research P. This book was released on 2019-03-31 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the results of a major project that sought to address a century-old question about the people who were buried with Beakers - the distinctive pottery of Continental origin that was current, predominantly in equally distinctive burials, in Britain from around 2450 BC. Who were these people? Were they immigrants and how far did they move around? What did they eat? What was their lifestyle? How do they compare with Britain's earlier inhabitants and with contemporaries who did not use Beaker pottery? An international team of leading archaeologists and scientists, led by Professor Mike Parker Pearson, was assembled to address these questions. Overall, new light has been shed on 369 people: 333 Beaker and non-Beaker users from the core 2500-1500 BC period, along with 17 from the Neolithic and 19 from after 1500 BC. While the genetic data provide convincing evidence for immigration by Continental Beaker users, the isotopic data indicate a more detailed picture of movements, mostly of fairly short distances within Britain, by the descendants of the first Beaker users. This lavishly illustrated book presents a body of data that will be vital to studies of Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age Britain for decades to come.
