Book excerpt: This paper presents preliminary results from field observations on the Lower Silurian La Vieille Formation in north-east New Brunswick regarding the extent of early hydrothermal dolomitization, a critical element for assessing hydrocarbon potential. Six stratigraphic sections of the Formation were carefully examined for facies architecture and evidence of hydrothermal alteration of limestone facies. Features of interest included early fractures, brecciation & dissolution associated with early fractures, large-scale collapse of sections, fracture-filling cements, and synsedimentary tectonic instability. The findings provide critical information pertinent to the hydrocarbon reservoir potential of these rocks.

Book excerpt: The West Tuya lava field is located about 95 kilometres north-north-west of Dease Lake, British Columbia. This report presents an overview & summary of field work, geographic information system spatial analysis, and preliminary petrographic analysis conducted at the field in 2003-04. Highlights of this work include: identification of three sub-aerial shield volcanoes and their mineral composition; confirmation that mantle-derived peridotite inclusions are present at two of the volcanoes; and interpretation of the sub-aerial lava flows. The minimum and maximum volumes of material erupted are also estimated.

Book excerpt: This paper describes a novel, high-resolution application of cross-borehole seismology at the Snap Lake diamond mine, Northwest Territories, to assess whether the relatively thin kimberlite dyke that hosts the diamonds could be mapped underground with sufficient resolution to accurately estimate its volume and to guide mining. Subsequent mining and mapping with the 50-by-70-metre test panel indicated whether the technique was able to map the top & bottom surfaces of the dyke and to identify ramps, pinch-outs, and cross-cutting fracture planes. The tests also compared the performance of that new technique with two other geophysical methods, high-frequency vibrating seismic surveying and ground penetrating radar.

Book excerpt: This study uses newly acquired high-resolution seismic reflection data to present evidence of large-scale mass transport deposits throughout the Quaternary in southern Orphan Basin located off the northern slope of the Grand Banks. Mass transport deposits are those associated with slope failure and transport as slumps, slides, debris avalanches, or debris flows. The results reveal the types of mass transport deposits on the Basin slope & floor and their depositional pattern from the early Pleistocene to the present.

Book excerpt: This paper presents results from a Quaternary mapping project conducted in two areas of central mainland Nunavut that were located beneath the Keewatin Ice Divide during the last glaciation. Field work included surficial mapping, regional-scale till sampling, stratigraphic studies, and ice-flow indicator surveys. The paper summarizes the findings related to ice flow directions, patterns, and the sequence of flow events in the two map areas. Preliminary interpretations are offered of the ice flow record from the oldest recognized ice-flow events to the most recent flows.

Book excerpt: This study was conducted in response to concerns raised by local residents about water quality in Fisherman Lake, located 18 kilometres north-west of Fort Liard, Northwest Territories. Field investigation of the lake revealed the existence of 13 gas seeps (largely methane) with distinct bubble trains rising continuously to the surface. This paper presents results of analyses of the gas & of the lake water and the determination, through isotope analyses, of whether the gas is of biogenic origin (related to the decomposition of organic matter) or thermogenic origin (representing a seep from geological strata of the gas field below the lake). The possible effects of methane on the lake water are also discussed and recommendations are made for further research.

Book excerpt: This report briefly describes the nature, extent, and age of marine deposits near the head of Wager Bay on the west side of Hudson Bay, Nunavut. The main focus is on determination of the marine limit, or the highest elevation reached by the post-glacial sea. The elevation of the marine limit yields information about the extent of inundation by post-glacial seas, the amount of post-glacial crustal deformation, and the elevation below which the geochemical composition of glacial deposits may have been altered by marine processes or by mixing of glacial materials with marine sediments. Marine limit positions were determined by recording the elevations of: raised deltas that indicate where meltwater streams & overflow channels from glacial lakes fed in to high-level water bodies; ice-contact deltas; and trimlines where the uppermost limit of wave erosion of glacial deposits is prominent.
