Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geologists conducting environmental site investigations in compliance with Federal and State regulations are often forced to rely on limited site and/or region specific geologic and hydrogeologic data. These sites are often located in industrial areas where surficial geologic features are obscured. The purpose of this paper is to describe the use of a simple, economical petrographic analysis method performed in conjunction with an environmental site investigation to better characterize subtle changes in subsurface geology. The method differentiates changes in rock type, classifies the rock samples, and provides detailed geologic descriptions for stratigraphic correlation. The results of the analyses were instrumental to understanding the site geology and ground water transport mechanisms.

Book excerpt: Environmental Geochemistry: Site Characterization, Data Analysis, Case Histories, and Associated Health Issues provides a wealth of information on modern geochemical methods, techniques, and procedures for those studying toxic substances found in soil, air, and water. This new edition takes an especially close look at environmental pollution and its impact on human health. The first third of the book looks at a variety of methods and procedures, such as taking groundwater samples, biological monitoring, geochemical mapping, and models of geochemical speciation. This is followed by a close look at different pollutants, including lead and pesticides. The authors conclude with several detailed case histories examining health issues resulting from environmental pollution. Environmental researchers and practitioners will return to this book again and again in their work towards understanding and reducing the environmental pollutants that affect our health. Provides an in-depth examinations of the latest geochemical techniques and procedures Presents a detailed analysis of various applied studies in pollution and contamination Includes new case histories that highlight environmental pollution and related health issues

Book excerpt: Watershed research is conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to expand our understanding of basic hydrologic mechanisms and their responses at the watershed scale and to provide information that serves as the basis for water and environmental management activities carried out largely by other governmental and private entities. The work of the USGS in this area is carried out by its Water Resources Division and occurs in three general program areas: basic research, regional and site assessments, and data collection. These activities are becoming increasingly important, especially in the context of water and environmental management, where contemporary problems are being approached more than ever on an integrated ecosystems or watershed basis and where the underlying physical, chemical, and biological science is complex. Although the value of this type of hydrologic research is well recognized within the USGS, available financial resources to support it remain modest. Thus, this study seeks to help maximize the effectiveness of the agency's work. The study took two years, during which time the committee visited field sites, received briefings, reviewed descriptive materials, deliberated toward conclusions, and wrote this report. Recommendations are intended to assist the USGS in improving its overall strategy for work in this area; descriptions of a number of scientific opportunities are included, and appropriate circumstances for collaboration with and support for others are identified.

It discusses some of the problems facing the public and private sectors and the engineering and scientific communities. It studies several aspects of environmental pollution, modelling, and monitoring, soil and rock properties, vulnerability studies, ecosystem remediation, climatological processes and hydrological studies, geo-ecology and landscape analysis, geo-environment in urban settings, natural hazards and risks, remote sensing of the environment, environmental planning and management, and restoration of ecosystems. The papers published in the book are grouped in the following sections: Remediation and Restoration; Environmental Modelling; Environmental Monitoring; Environmental Hazards and Pollution; Landscape Analysis.
