Book excerpt: A groundwater-flow model was developed to evaluate potential future effects of growth and of water-management strategies on water resources in the Chimacum Creek Basin. The model covers an area of about 64 square miles (mi2) on the Olympic Peninsula in northeastern Jefferson County, Washington. The Chimacum Creek Basin drains an area of about 53 mi2 and consists of Chimacum Creek and its tributary East Fork Chimacum Creek, which converge near the town of Chimacum and discharge to Port Townsend Bay near the town of Irondale. The topography of the model area consists of north-south oriented, narrow, regularly spaced parallel ridges and valleys that are characteristic of fluted glaciated surfaces.

Book excerpt: Quantitative Solutions in Hydrogeology and Groundwater Modeling addresses and solves a variety of questions and problems from hydrogeological practice. It includes major aspects of quantitative groundwater evaluation, from basic laboratory determination of hydrogeological parameters to complex analytical calculations and modeling for engineering purposes. Groundwater modeling is a strong trend in hydrogeology. Recent years have seen the rapid development of sophisticated and powerful groundwater models, along with a decrease in the use of the more mathematically demanding analytical quantitative solutions. Quantitative Solutions in Hydrogeology and Groundwater Modeling avoids this conflict by explaining both modeling and mathematical solutions in detail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes a novel physics-based approach to inverse modeling that makes use of the properties of the equations governing the physics of the processes under consideration. It focuses on the inverse problems occurring in hydrogeology, but the approach is also applicable to similar inverse problems in various other fields, such as petroleum-reservoir engineering, geophysical and medical imaging, weather forecasting, and flood prediction. This approach takes into consideration the physics – for instance, the boundary conditions required to obtain a well-posed mathematical problem – to help avoid errors in model building and therefore enhance the reliability of the results. In addition, this method requires less computation time and less computer memory. The theory is presented in a comprehensive, not overly mathematical, way, with three practice-oriented hydrogeological case studies and a comparison with the conventional approach illustrating the power of the method. Forward and Inverse Modeling of Groundwater Flow is of use to researchers and graduate students in the fields of hydrology, as well as to professional hydrologists within industry. It also appeals to geophysicists and those working in or studying petroleum reservoir modeling and basin modeling.

Book excerpt: River basins are complex areas, combining the natural processes of precipitation, evapotranspiration, surface water and groundwater runoff with man-made features such as dams and reservoirs, diversions and irrigation schemes, and industrial and urban water uses. Computer models may be constructed to represent these natural and man-made processes. Such models are used to help understand processes that are difficult to measure (such as evaporation) and to study the effects of changes in land cover, water management or climate on the natural and man-made processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed description of how Python can be used to give insight into the flow of groundwater based on analytic solutions. Starting with simple problems to illustrate the basic principles, complexity is added step by step to show how one-dimensional and two-dimensional models of one or two aquifers can be implemented. Steady and transient flow problems are discussed in confined, semi-confined, and unconfined aquifers that may include wells, rivers, and areal recharge. Special consideration is given to coastal aquifers, including the effect of tides and the simulation of interface flow. Application of Python allows for compact and readable code, and quick visualization of the solutions. Python scripts are provided to reproduce all results. The scripts are also available online so that they can be altered to meet site-specific conditions. This book is intended both as training material for the next generation of university students and as a useful resource for practitioners. A primer is included for those who are new to Python or as a refresher for existing users.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundwater hydrology is the SCIence that considers the occurrence, distribution, and movement of water below the surface of the ground. Groundwater is water located beneath the ground surface in soil pore spaces and in the fractures of geologic formations. A formation of rock/soil is called an aquifer when it can yield a useable quantity of water. The depth at which soil pore spaces become saturated with water is called the water table. Objective of this study is to relate the relationship of the groundwater flow movement due to pumping condition and to prove Darcy's Law equation is relevant to be applied in the study of groundwater flow. Based on title of the study, this project was carried out by using hydrology apparatus inside the laboratory with single pumping mode condition and seven different values of pumping flow rate (Cn.The measurement of piezometer head showed the illustration of water table drawdown in the ground when using the same size of sand which is 0.5 mm in the catchments area, and the same value of hydraulic conductivity (K) was equal to 3.0 x 10-3 m/day. Data from laboratory was compared with the value that simulated from Darcy's Law equation. The comparison of the data is not much different. The value of differences between Darcy's Law and experiment value were not exceeded than 10 percent. It's proved that the equation formulated by Henry Philibert Gaspart (1806¬1871) is valid to be applied in hydrology study. The result of this study highlighted the effects of pumping activity on water table level; higher rate of the pumping could cause the higher drawdown of water table especially at the well point. -Author.
