Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Illinois River Valley, Vol. 1 Few regions of like size in our country exhibit more unique features than does the Valley of the Illinois. In glacial times it was the outlet to the Gulf of Mexico for the run-off from the great ice sheets covering Canada, the Great Lakes, and north central states. In this era it received many of its present day physical features. Before Lake Erie found its egress to Lake Ontario over the Niagara Falls, the waters of the Great Lakes ran down through the Illinois Valley to the Gulf. Moreover, in that far off glacial period, the upper Mississippi and Rock rivers joined near the site of the city of Dixon and thence flowed southward to meet the Illinois near the present location of Hennepin. These forces have given the valley rather the character of a sluggish lake than a typical river bed, of normal fall. From Peru to the Mississippi, the Illinois shows only one and one-half inch of fall per mile. Before the white man came, the valley's luxurious prairies abounded in all kinds of game and were a region much sought after by the Indian tribes. Here were fought some of the most momentous Indian wars. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geography of Illinois The present volume is the first in a series inaugurated by the University of Chicago Press to fill a long-felt need. The plan adopted is to provide an authoritative geographic study of a state or other limited region, presenting in compact form the wide range of physical influences which make up the geographic environment in which men live. And further, attempting to show the ways in which human life in the region is shaped by these physical influences. It is with this point of View, and with this purpose in mind, that Professor Ridgley has undertaken the study of Illinois. The aim is to present the geography of the state in such a way as to be of interest and value to the general reader, as well as to furnish teachers and schools with an ample text for reference or class use. It cannot be hoped that the point of View, choice of materials presented, or method of presentation will please everyone, but critical comment will be welcomed by the author and by the editor as aids in furthering the service of the series. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Illinois River Valley, Vol. 2: Biographical Mr. Kepler was born in Litchfield, Illinois, March 23, 1872, the only son of Andrew and Frances Kepler, whose family also numbered a daughter, Grace. The parents were early residents of Illinois and the mother died when her son was but six years of age. The father was a harness-maker of Litchfield but for two years prior to his death was an invalid. When only eight years of age Eugene Kepler sold sandwiches and newspapers at the trains in order to get money for the needs of the family. He early learned the value of industry, perseverance and honesty and these qualities dominated his entire business career. When a youth of fourteen he went to Springfield, Illinois, where he pursued a busi ness course, and at the same time he held a position in a shoe store of that city, being employed as a clerk at a weekly wage of fifteen dollars. While thus working he attracted the attention of a Mr. Burns, a shoe dealer of Peoria, Illinois, who offered him employ ment and brought him to this city in 1891. Something of his cap ability and his dependability is shown in the fact that after six months he was made manager of the store. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lower Illinois Valley: Color Me Greene Mississippi Rivers over this distance and a strip of land 10 or 15 miles wide on the east side ofthe Illinois River. The Illinois River Valley, which is broad and steep sided, is oriented almost exactly north south; it has been cut through Mississippian limestone and varies in width from about to 5 miles. The valley is clearly defined by nearly perpendicular limestone bluffs that extend along on both sides of its length; the bluffs are broken only where tributaries, secondary streams which intersect and flow into the Illinois, have cut their own valleys. The river, which is broad and slow moving on a gentle gradient, frequently flooded before construction of flood-control levees. Natural levees occur in many places in the bottom lands and are associated with the river's course and with older fossil riverbeds. Long, low, sand ridges lying roughly parallel to the present river bed, extend over virtually the entire length of the valley. The river now follows the western side of the valley quite closely; between the river and the eastern bluff is an alluvial bottomland, 3 to 5 miles wide. Before being drained, this zone supported a dense growth of water-tolerant trees and included numerous esters and shallow lakes. It covers the entire area of the valley between the bluffs except for a narrow terrace along the eastern bluff which was prehistorically a zone of wet prairie. The talus slope of the bluffs is today, and was in the past, covered by an oak-hickory forest which also covers the slopes of tributary valleys on both sides of the river. Above the secondary valleys, ex tending away from the river for as much as several miles, is a heavily dissected landscape that once supported heavy forest, again predominantly of the oak-hickory type. East of the Illinois River, this for est gave way to high grass prairie; continuous forest probably extended between the two major rivers at least as far north as the north end of Pike County.
