Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Books begin as ideas. The suggestion for this one came from my mentor and friend, Hajo Holborn of Yale University. To him I am indebted for a series of challenging and rewarding experiences in the study of history. This work started as a routine dissertation on a limited subject, developed into a rejection of several generally accepted notions about German history, and finally opened out upon some broader perspectives of the modern Western world. In pursuing my topic I have tried to remain consistent and true to a fundamental conviction: that ideas cannot be dissociated from the men and situations that give birth to them, or from the changing characteristics of later men and later situations that use or affect the earlier ideological heritage. Politics by slogan is an aspect of man's activity that has its obvious, serious defects. These imperfections become more menacing when they are enshrined as history by slogan in the service of whatever cause. To counteract this tendency I have tried to tie the ideas of mid European integration clearly to specific persons or situations at every stage of development. Without such anchorage ideas will billow into slogans or evaporate into loose generalizations.

Book excerpt: Petermann's Maps focuses on the maps published in the famous German journal Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen. This journal, which still exists today, greatly influenced the development of scientific geography and cartography in Germany in the nineteenth century. Numerous articles have been published by recognized experts in this field, along with a multitude of illustrations, showing maps, prints and photographs. The journal developed into an important publication, setting the standard in the history of the great expeditions and discoveries, and European colonial matters. Petermann's Maps contains a bibliography of over 3400 maps, the complete series of maps published in Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen between the year of its foundation, 1855, to the end of the Second World War. Besides the bibliography 160 of the most attractive geographical and thematic coloured maps are included in Petermann's Maps. These maps can also be viewed on the CD-ROM accompanying the book.An extensive introduction precedes the cartobibliography proper, placing Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen in its historical context. The introduction describes the history of geography from the eighteenth century onwards, outlining the development of the study of the science of cartography in Germany. The major role the founder of the journal, Augustus Petermann (1822-1878), and the publishing house Justus Perthes in Gotha played in these developments is discussed at length.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Geographische Zeitschrift is an important forum for the ongoing theoretical and methodological debates in human geography. On the occasion of the IGU Congress 2004 in Glasgow, the editors have assembled a selection of articles which have appeared in the Geographische Zeitschrift in recent years. To make them available to a wider public they are now translated into English. In the selection of the contributions for this volume, the guiding principle was of variety as far as theoretical grounding, the objects of research and branches of human geography were concerned. Thus, it reflects the self-perception of the Geographische Zeitschrift and allows an insight into the ideas and innovative debates in German geography. Contents Eike W. Schamp: Editorial - Helmut Kluter: Space and Compatibility - Rolf Sternberg: Entrepreneurship research. The relevance of the region and tasks facing economic geography - Marc Boeckler: Culture, geography and the diacritical practice of Oriental entrepreneurs - Martina Neuburger: Smallholder vulnerability in degraded areas. The political ecology of pioneer frontier processes in Brazil.
