Book excerpt: This dissertation provides in-depth analysis of major and trace element and Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotope compositions of mafic lavas in the Anatolian province. I combine incompatible and fluid-mobile trace elements and radiogenic lithophile isotope compositions to interpret the genesis of Sivas, Central Anatolia mafic lavas and the source components for mafic lavas throughout the Anatolian-circum-Mediterranean region. The data provide insight into the long-term (~1.8 Ga) geologic and tectonic history of the area. I use major and trace element compositions of Sivas mafic lavas to define two groups with contrasting petrogenetic histories. The first group is comprised of basalts and basaltic trachyandesites. Their low Ba/Nb, La/Nb, and Th/Nb values are similar to those observed in mantle-derived basalts and suggest they are derived from an asthenospheric mantle-dominated source. The second group are basanites that are enriched in incompatible trace elements relative to mid-ocean ridge basalts and have high Ba/Nb, La/Nb, and Th/Nb values indicative of a source in metasomatized sub-continental lithosphere containing hydrous phases such as amphibole. I also use the major element compositions of clinopyroxene phenecrysts in the mafic lavas to constrain the pressures of melting and differentiation for Sivas mafic lavas. Specifically clinopyroxene Al contents of the basaltic group suggest crystallization both at lower crustal depths (~10 kb) and at near-surface pressures. In contrast, basanite clinopyroxene indicate only one stage of crystal growth at around 5-8 kb prior to eruption. Sr-Nd-Hf-Pb isotope compositions of Sivas mafic lavas support and expand on the trace element findings. As seen in trace element compositions, the basaltic group consistently records higher asthenospheric contributions while the basanites with more radiogenic Sr and Pb low Nd isotope values originate from magmas with higher contributions from metasomatized sub-continental lithosphere. The Pb isotope signatures also record pseudo-binary mixing between shallow depleted asthenosphere, a regionally heterogeneous lithosphere, and a common mantle source with the isotopic characteristics of the C component or the circum-Mediterranean asthenosphere to form Sivas magmas. Calculated Nd model ages relative to depleted mantle indicate the incorporated lithosphere stabilized from the mantle between 1.8 and 1.2 Ga corresponding to assembly of Rodinia and Columbia supercontinents. Variations in source contributions and lithosphere stabilization ages appear to correlate with the geographic location of a modern strike-slip fault along the Kızılırmak River in the Sivas Basin, suggesting that Sivas mafic lavas record contributions from distinct lithospheric packages that are juxtaposed across a major crustal suture. One important implication of this result is that the oft-invoked subduction modification of mantle source regions contributing to Anatolian volcanism is not related to the more recent Miocene closure of Africa and Eurasia, but rather is an ancient inherited feature that has been present for an extended period of time.This dissertation also gives insight on science education and focuses on evidence for progression of knowledge with age and importance of targeted teaching. Science concepts for each grade level are intended to build on content learned in previous grades with the idea that students transition from a very simple to a very complex understanding of Earth and Space science by high school graduation.

We explore the petrogenesis of primitive mafic cinder cone products erupted from the Hasanda Cinder Cone Province (HCCP) and the adjacent Karapnar Volcanic Field (KVF) as well as intermediate compositions (basaltic andesites, andesites and dacites) erupted contemporaneously from the Hasanda stratovolcano. I begin by using whole rock geochemical analyses alongside Sr-Nd-Hf-Pb isotopic data to explore the mechanisms of mantle melting that generated the HCCP and KVF lavas and compare their petrogenesis to those observed in other Anatolian volcanic provinces. In doing so, I document changes in magma chemistry that reflect the complex and evolving tectonic regime, build upon previously proposed mechanisms of lithospheric removal, and clarify the evolution of the mantle beneath Central Anatolia in order to better understand the complex regional geodynamic history. Major and trace element geochemistry indicate melting of the spinel-bearing lithosphere to produce individual small mafic magma batches of heterogeneous melts and further suggest contribution from metasomatic phases. Isotopic analyses require contributions from the metasomatized Anatolian subcontinental lithosphere along with input from a spatially heterogeneous sublithospheric mantle. The mafic lavas record an increase in degree of melting with depth accompanied by gradual reduction in the contribution from metasomatic phases, which is indicative of lithospheric drip melting. This geochemical signature is also observed in Western Anatolian late Miocene and Quaternary mafic lavas, but is not exhibited in the Quaternary East Anatolian lavas or the Sivas Basin basalts and basanites in north-Central Anatolia. Our findings demonstrate a complex interplay between lithospheric and asthenospheric source domains and suggest drip melting was initiated after delamination of the subducted NeoTethys slab, resulting in upwelling asthenosphere and destabilization of the remaining lithosphere which melted to produce the observed mafic volcanism at the HCCP and KVF. Book excerpt: Five mafic lava flows located on the southern flank of Mount Baker are among the most primitive in the volcanic field. A comprehensive whole rock and mineral chemistry dataset (including major, trace, REE and isotopic abundances as well as petrography and mineral chemistry) reveals the diversity between these mafic lavas, which come from distinct sources and have been variably affected by ascent through the crust. Disequilibrium textures present in all of the lavas indicate that crustal processes have affected the magmas. Despite this evidence, mantle source characteristics have been retained, demonstrated by a lack of variation in the most highly incompatible elements, insignificant addition of crustal material, lack of an obvious crustal radiogenic source, and minimal chemical differences between lavas that are the result of mixing and their mafic endmembers. In evaluating mantle sources, four endmember lava types are represented. These include modified low-K tholeiitic basalt (LKOT-like), typical calc-alkaline (CA) lavas, high- Mg basaltic andesite (HMBA), and a second but distinct basaltic andesite. The first type, the basalt of Park Butte (49.3-50.3 wt.% SiO2, Mg# 64-65), is classified as low-K, and has major element chemistry similar to LKOT found elsewhere in the Cascades. Park Butte also has the lowest overall abundances of trace elements (with the exception of the HREE), indicating it is either derived from the most depleted mantle source or has undergone the largest degree of partial melting. A second lava type is represented by the basalts of Lake Shannon (50.7- 52.6 wt.% SiO2, Mg# 58-62) and Sulphur Creek (51.2-54.6 wt.% SiO2, Mg# 56-57). These two lavas are comparable to calc-alkaline rocks found in arcs worldwide, and have similar trace element patterns; however, they differ in abundances of REE, indicating variation in degree of partial melting or fractionation. The third lava type is represented by the basaltic andesite of Tarn Plateau (51.8-54.0 wt.% SiO2, Mg# 68-70), which has characteristics similar to high-Mg andesite worldwide. The second basaltic andesite unit, Cathedral Crag (52.2- 52.6 wt.% SiO2, Mg# 55-58), can be distinguished from the HMBA endmember because it has much lower MgO, Mg#, Ni and Cr, and is the least primitive of all the lavas in this study. The strongly depleted HREE nature of both basaltic andesite units suggests fractionation from a high-Mg basaltic parent (to a greater extent in the less primitive Cathedral Crag lavas) derived from a source with residual garnet is responsible for their generation. Assessment of the relative enrichment of a slab component in the lavas reveals that the calc-alkaline units are least enriched, the HMBA and basaltic andesite are intermediate, and the LKOT-like unit is most enriched in slab fluids. Petrogenetic indicators point to sediment as the primary slab fluid contributor, with a small role for altered oceanic crust fluids in the LKOT-like unit. Modeled fluid compositions support this assertion. Melt modeling indicates the LKOT-like and calc-alkaline lavas were generated by partial melting of a depleted spinel harzburgite, while the results for modeling HMBA and basaltic andesite units suggest a depleted garnet harzburgite source. Differences in primitiveness (i.e. MgO, Ni and Cr content) among the units are the result of differences in depth and degree of fractionation in the crust. A summary model is presented where 1) varying degrees of a primarily sediment-derived slab component infiltrate the mantle wedge; 2) slab flux assists in melting two distinct mantle sources; 3) melting occurs at various fractions, and the resulting melts stall at different levels in the crust; and 4) differentiation at a range of pressures to different degrees produces mafic magmas with diverse chemistry.

Book excerpt: Understanding the geochemical evolution between the source and resultant magmas is an important step in refining our understanding of plate tectonics. Primitive, mafic lavas are generally considered the most likely to preserve mantle source characteristics as these melts have been the least modified by geochemical effects of magmatic and secondary processes. Such processes (e.g. partial melting, fractional crystallization and contamination through assimilation of crustal material) exert geochemical controls on the composition and evolution of such magmas. The primary aim of this thesis is to study geochemical source signatures of magmas from a variety of tectonic settings and the processes that have affected such magmas. Major chapters of this thesis explore the generation and transfer of the geochemical signature of Pacific altered oceanic crust (AOC) subducting into the Izu-Bonin trench, the effects of Pacific oceanic plateau formation on the upper mantle source of the Pacific-Izanagi mid-ocean ridge basalts during the Mid-Cretaceous and the generation of compositionally similar alkalic lavas on both continental and oceanic crust in the West Antarctic Rift System (WARS). I used a variety of geochemical measurements, including major and trace element and Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf-Os isotope analyses to analyze two unique sets of samples to illuminate the geochemical mantle source-primary melt-erupted volcanic evolution at a convergent margin, an established mid-ocean ridge setting and a rift zone. The samples studied in Chapters 2 and 3 were dredged AOC from an along-arc transect. They have a Pacific-type Pb-isotope signature and show a progressive trace element and radiogenic isotope enrichment from older crust in the south to younger, northern crust. This observation indicates that the previously documented Indian-type Pb-isotope signature of Izu-Bonin arc lavas is not directly sourced from the subducting material and that the Indian-type mantle wedge has a greater than anticipated role in the generation of the Pb-isotopic signature of the associated arc lavas. Chapter 3 focuses on this same suite of transect samples but addresses the unanticipated geochemical enrichment trend from the older northern crust to the younger southern crust. This compositional trend likely results from contamination of the Pacific upper mantle due to the eruption of the Ontong-Java, Manihiki and Hikurangi plateaus in a massive magmatic pulse centered around 125 Ma. Chapter 4, on the other hand, uses an ocean-continent transect of alkalic lavas from the West Antarctic rift system (WARS) to assess the effects and degree of crustal contamination in WARS lavas. My findings indicate a similar mantle source for these lavas with variable degrees of crustal contamination that are most evident in the continental samples. This result emphasizes the pervasive nature of crustal contamination, especially in continental settings.

Book excerpt: Major element, trace element, and mineral compositions have been determined for four Quaternary mafic monogenetic cinder cones and flows south of Glacier Peak, a dacitic stratovolcano in the northern Cascade arc. The flows are the Whitechuck basalt, and the basaltic andesites of Indian Pass, Lightning Creek, and Dishpan Gap. Whitechuck has high concentrations of AI2O3 (e"18 wt.%) and low concentrations of K2O (d"0.45 wt.%) and shares similar trace element characteristics with high alumina olivine tholeiites reported in the central and southern Cascades. The three basaltic andesites are calc-alkaline. Indian Pass and Lighting Creek have primitive compositions, with Mg# [100*Mg/(Mg+Fe*)]> 65, Cr> 200 ppm, and Ni> 100 ppm. Most samples have olivine in equilibrium with bulk rock compositions. Rb and Sr are relatively low in most flows, especially at Whitechuck and Dishpan Gap. Sr and La decrease with increasing SiO2 in the Lightning Creek and Dishpan Gap cinder cones, indicating possible mixing with a Sr and La-poor felsic component represented by the most evolved Glacier Peak dacites. Petrographic observations of disequilibrium textures such as xenocrysts, xenoliths, quenched glass inclusions, and strongly-zoned phenocrysts in these two flows also indicate possible melting. All flows are enriched in large ion lithophile elements and light rare earth elements relative to high field strength elements, showing that the mantle beneath Glacier Peak has been fluxed by a hydrous subduction component. Ba/Nb ratios (~40-110) are highest for the three basaltic andesites, indicating that they had the greatest amount of subduction component enrichment. Nb and Ta abundances are highest at Indian Pass (Nb =~7 ppm) and lowest at Whitechuck (Nb = ~2-3), indicating that Indian Pass and the other two basaltic andesites were produced by relatively low degree hydrous melts of depleted mantle. In comparison, the Whitechuck basalts were produced by relatively dry (2O) slightly higher degree melting of a more depleted mantle (similar to NMORB) source. Of the three mantle-domains inferred beneath the Cascades, only a MORB-like mantle and a subduction-fluxed depleted mantle are represented beneath the Glacier Peak region. No OIB-like mantle domain is thus far represented in the Cascades north of the Mt. Rainier region
