Book excerpt: On a longtemps considéré que la guerre n'était qu'une aff aire d'hommes, car, jusqu'à peu, la force musculaire était essentielle à la victoire. Ce partage fondamental a pesé de manière exclusive sur le dimorphisme social entre les genres. Si les femmes ont rarement joué un rôle direct dans les guerres, elles en ont été en revanche les victimes et les auxiliaires. Le rapt, le viol et l'esclavage étaient - et sont encore - leur lot commun, et le deuil des mères, des épouses, des soeurs et des fi lles est une souff rance universelle. Par le passé, des cantinières, des vivandières et des infi rmières, mais aussi des prostituées, ont été plus directement mêlées aux opérations militaires ; seules quelques rares femmes, telle Jeanne d'Arc, ont pris une part active, voire prépondérante à la guerre, lors de sièges de ville, d'opérations de résistance, de guérillas ou de terrorisme.
