Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Dewey once wrote: "Education is such an important interest of life that . . . we should expect to find a philosophy of education, just as there is a philosophy of art and of religion. We should expect, that is, such a treatment of the subject as would show that the nature of existence renders education an integral and indispensable function of life. " Indeed, such treatments of education are at least as old as Plato's Republic. Even so, it was not until the nineteenth century that the philosophy of education was recognized as a distinct discipline. His torically, it has been one thing to treat education in such a manner as Dewey mentions; it has been another thing to do so while deliberately making explicit a discipline with a subject matter which is in some sense distinct from that of other disciplines. The aim, in the present study, has been to study the origins of philosophy of education as a distinct discipline in the United States. In doing so, "origins" are taken to mean, first, that from which the disci pline has come, and second, that which initiates, serves as a point of departure for what follows. In searching for origins, I have explored the philosophic considerations of education from which came those distinct conceptions of the philosophy of education that were to serve as points of departure for later considerations of the discipline.
Book Synopsis The History and Evolution of Psychology by : Brian D. Cox
Download or read book The History and Evolution of Psychology written by Brian D. Cox and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses key figures in history in the context of their time, takes students on a carefully-formulated, chronological journey through the build-up of psychology from ancient times to the present, and seeks to draw students into the way science is done, rather than merely presenting them with historical fact. Students will learn not only the ‘what’, but the ‘why’ of the history of psychology and will acquire the necessary background historical material to fully understand those concepts. Organized around a series of paradigms—a shift from scholasticism to rationalism or empiricism, and a shift from idealism to materialism—the book seeks to portray psychology as an on-going, evolving process, rather than a theory.

Download or read book Ontogeny written by P. P. G. Bateson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is devoted principally to the theme of behavioral develop ment. The study of ontogeny has attracted some of the most bitter and protracted controversies in the whole field of ethology and psychology. This is partly because the arguments have reflected more general and continuing ideological battles about nature and nurture. In the opening essay, Oppenheim shows how these debates have recurred in much the same form over the last century. His chapter also brings out a more worrying feature of such argument. He demonstrates that authors who are well known for their strongly held partisan views have written in much more balanced ways than is usually admitted. Although the ex cluded middle is familiar enough in academic argument, the dynamic tensions actually present in developing systems may be particularly prone to polarize debate about what is actually happening. This point is elegantly explored by Oyama in her essay on her concept of maturation.
