Book Synopsis Quantitative Reasoning in the Context of Energy and Environment by : Robert Mayes
Download or read book Quantitative Reasoning in the Context of Energy and Environment written by Robert Mayes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-19 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides professional development leaders and teachers with a framework for integrating authentic real-world performance tasks into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) classrooms. We incorporate elements of problem-based learning to engage students around grand challenges in energy and environment, place-based leaning to motivate students by relating the problem to their community, and Understanding by Design to ensure that understanding key concepts in STEM is the outcome. Our framework has as a basic tenet interdisciplinary STEM approaches to studying real-world problems. We invited professional learning communities of science and mathematics teachers to bring multiple lenses to the study of these problems, including the sciences of biology, chemistry, earth systems and physics, technology through data collection tools and computational science modeling approaches, engineering design around how to collect data, and mathematics through quantitative reasoning. Our goal was to have teachers create opportunities for their students to engage in real-world problems impacting their place; problems that could be related to STEM grand challenges demonstrating the importance and utility of STEM. We want to broaden the participation of students in STEM, which both increases the future STEM workforce, providing our next generation of scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians, as well as producing a STEM literate citizenry that can make informed decisions about grand challenges that will be facing their generation. While we provide a specifi c example of an interdisciplinary STEM module, we hope to do more than provide a single fish. Rather we hope to teach you how to fish so you can create modules that will excite your students.

Book excerpt: A global exploration of coal geology, from production and use to chemical properties and coal petrology Coal Geology, 3rd Edition, offers a revised and updated edition of this popular book which provides a comprehensive overview of the field of coal geology including coal geophysics, hydrogeology and mining. Also covered in this volume are fully revised coverage of resource and reserve definitions, equipment and recording techniques together with the use of coal as an alternative energy source as well as environmental implications. This third edition provides a textbook ideally suited to anyone studying, researching or working in the field of coal geology, geotechnical engineering and environmental science. Fills the gap between academic aspects of coal geology and the practical role of geology in the coal industry Examines sedimentological and stratigraphical geology, together with mining, geophysics, hydrogeology, environmental issues and coal marketing Defines global coal resource classifications and methods of calculation Addresses the alternative uses of coal as a source of energy Covers a global approach to coal producers and consumers
Book Synopsis Tectonic Setting and Gondwana Basin Architecture in the Indian Shield by : Subhrangsu Acharyya
Download or read book Tectonic Setting and Gondwana Basin Architecture in the Indian Shield written by Subhrangsu Acharyya and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2018-12-04 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tectonic Setting and Gondwana Basin Architecture in the Indian Shield, Volume Four, is the newest book in the Problems and Solutions in Structural Geology and Tectonics series from Elsevier, and is a synthesized monograph on the tectonic settings of Gondwana basins of India. It is a unique book on a topic of national and international interest, especially given the economic importance of the region (coal reserves). The book is authored and edited by very experienced theoretical experts and explores and reconstructs unified stratigraphic research of the region, including the relative role of tension and lateral movement in basin formation. Basin formation is the driving force behind formation and break-up of supercontinents and the time frame of supercontinent cycles. - Provides the latest data on the tectonic settings of Gondwana basins of India - Explores the unified stratigraphic research of the region - Authored and edited by experienced theoretical experts

W. Gibson and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gething Formation in northeastern British Columbia has long been of economic interest as a potential source of thermal and metallurgical coal. This report, which is based on 20 field sections, 34 coal exploration borehole cores and 19 geophysical and lithological well logs from petroleum exploration boreholes, describes the regional geology of the formation and provides detailed information and data on lithofacies, lithofacies relationships, age and correlation of important lithostratigraphic marker units, the distribution of coal seams and the depositional setting.
