Book excerpt: Physical models have been, and continue to be used by engineers when faced with unprecedented challenges, when engineering science has been non-existent or inadequate, and in any other situation when the engineer has needed to raise their confidence in a design proposal to a sufficient level to begin construction. For this reason, models have mostly been used by designers and constructors of highly innovative projects, when previous experience has not been available. The book covers the history of using of physical models in the design and development of civil and building engineering projects including bridges in the mid-18th century, William Fairbairn?s Britannia bridge in the 1840s, the masonry Aswan Dam in the 1890s, concrete dams in the 1920s, thin concrete shell roofs and the dynamic behaviour of tall buildings in earthquakes from the 1930s, tidal flow in estuaries and the acoustics of concert halls from the 1950s, and cable-net and membrane structures in the 1960s. Traditionally, progress in engineering has been attributed to the creation and use of engineering science, the understanding materials properties and the development of new construction methods. The book argues that the use of reduced scale models have played an equally important part in the development of civil and building engineering. However, like the history of engineering design itself, this crucial contribution has not been widely reported or celebrated. The book concludes with reviews of the current use of physical models alongside computer models, for example, in boundary layer wind tunnels, room acoustics, seismic engineering, hydrology, and air flow in buildings.

The Forest served as headquarters for the Priest River Forest Experiment Station and continues to be used for forest research critical to understanding forest development and the many processes, structures, and functions occurring in them. At the time the Forest was created, Idaho had been a State for only 11 years. The early Forest Service leaders, such as Gifford Pinchot, Raphael Zon, and Henry Graves, were creating a new department and making decisions that would impact the culture, economics, and history of not only the State of Idaho and the Northwest, but the nation. The location of the Forest, in a remote section of northern Idaho, was due partly to the need for research on tree species within the Pacific Coast forest region, but also because it contained large amounts of western white pine, the prized tree species for construction. Since the Forest's establishment, numerous Forest Service researchers, educators from colleges and universities across the nation, and State and private forestry personnel have used the Forest to solve problems impacting forests and economics, not only locally and regionally but also worldwide. Researchers such as Bob Marshall, Harry Gisborne, Richard Bingham, and Charles Wellner made enormous contributions to the forestry industry. Due to the importance of the research still being conducted, it continues to attract dedicated scientists today.

This manual applies to HQUSACE elements, major subordinate commands, districts, laboratories, and field operating activities having responsibility for design, construction, and operation of civil works projects within the nearshore coastal region. This manual discusses the data needed, identifies data sources, and discusses parameters and methods applicable to beach fill design procedures. The importance of borrow material characteristics and procedures for adjusting the fill quantity to account for differences between natural beach material and borrow material are presented. Monitoring needs prior to, during, and following construction are also discussed.

Book excerpt: The status of America’s infrastructure is graded every four years by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and reports are provided on the various categories. In this book, prominent women engineers discuss many of the eighteen infrastructure categories from the 2021 ASCE Infrastructure Report Card providing background, analysis of the issues facing the category and projections for the future. Categories covered include aviation, bridges, dams, water and wastewater, energy, hazardous waste, inland waterways, levees, ports, public parks, rail, roads, solid waste, and transit. Case studies from the authors’ work are included throughout. These topics touch on many of the challenges facing the world today and these solutions by women researchers and practitioners are valuable for their technical excellence and their non-traditional perspective. As an important part of the Women in Engineering and Science book series, the work highlights the contribution of women leaders in many of the infrastructure categories, inspiring women and men, girls and boys to enter and apply themselves to secure our future infrastructure.
