The last chapters explore the major notational devices commonly employed in the formulation of phonological rules and the role of syntactic and lexical information in controlling the application of phonological rules. The ground gained is certainly evident in the present study, a technical reorganization according to generative phonology of the phonological description of Yawelmani--one of the six dialects analyzed in Stanley Newman's classic book of 1944, The Yokuts Language of California.Although the informed reader will immediately see by comparison the remarkable advances made in the theory of phonology since Professor Newman wrote, Yawelmani Phonology is self-contained and does not assume complete familiarity with Newman except where explicit comparison is made. The book is concerned primarily with the most systematic part of verb derivation and the regular type of noun paradigms. Specifically, it considers verbs involving the "reduced stem" of the verb base and the "normal stem" of the verb theme; nouns with a "regular stem" are treated as well. Irregular forms, outside this circle of intensity, are examined too if they have any bearing on regular forms, or if they can be brought into the description by way of reference. A previously unpublished list of Yawelmani nouns collected by Newman is consulted to establish some general phonological rules and determine the underlying representations of noun bases.Despite the acknowledged debt to Professor Newman, the research reported here will throw new light on the understanding of the structure of the Yawelmani language. Organized heuristically--so that the presentation of phonological rules proceeds evenly from the general to the specific--the material can be easily adapted to serve as a short introduction to the theory and method of generative phonology. Where applicable, diagrams are introduced with each new rule to demonstrate what ordering of the rules already obtained is needed to generate the correct speech forms at that level of analysis. The overall exposition borrows terms (morph, allomorph) from descriptive linguistics, which, while not affecting the theoretical import, will facilitate understanding of the book's organization for those readers only tentatively familiar with the generative branch of phonology.MIT Press Research Monograph No. 43

Book excerpt: Velar Fronting (VF) is the name for any synchronic or diachronic phonological process shifting the velar place of articulation to the palatal region of the vocal tract. A well-known case of VF in Standard German is the rule specifying that the fricative [x] assimilates to [ç] after front segments. VF also refers to the change from velar sounds like [ɣ k g ŋ] to palatals ([ʝ c ɟ ɲ]). The book provides a thorough investigation of VF in German dialects: Data are drawn from over 300 original sources for varieties that are (or were) spoken in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and other countries. VF differs geographically along three parameters: (A) triggers, (B) targets, and (C) outputs. VF triggers (=A) are typically defined according to vowel height: In some systems VF is induced only by high front vowels, in others by high and mid front vowels, and in yet others by high, mid, and low front vowels. Some varieties treat consonants ([r l n]) as triggers, while others do not. VF can be nonassimilatory, in which case the rule applies even in the context of back segments. In many varieties of German, VF targets (=B) consist of the two fricatives [x ɣ], but in other dialects the targets comprise [x] but not [ɣ]. In some places, VF affects not only [x ɣ], but also velar stops and the velar nasal. The output of VF (=C) is typically palatal [ç] (given the input [x]), but in many other places it is the alveolopalatal [ɕ]. A major theme is the way in which VF interacts with synchronic and diachronic changes creating or eliminating structures which can potentially undergo it or trigger it. In many dialects the relationship between velars ([x]) and palatals ([ҫ]) is transparent because velars only occur in the back vowel context and palatals only when adjacent to front sounds. In that type of system, independent processes can either feed VF (by creating additional structures which the latter can undergo), or they can bleed it (by eliminating potential structures to which VF could apply). In other dialects, VF is opaque. In one opaque system, both velars ([x]) and palatals ([ҫ]) surface in the context of front segments. Thus, in addition to expected front vowel plus palatal sequences ([…iç…]), there are also unexpected ones consisting of front vowel plus velar ([…ix…]). In a second type of opaque system, velars and palatals are found in the context of back segments; hence, expected sequences such as […iç…] occur in addition to unexpected ones like […ɑç…].

The theory of lexical phonology is one part of the study of linguistics which passes through several conceptions from the 1950s until today. Lexical phonology was developed in the early 1980s by K. P. Mohanan and P. Kiparsky and is the one most similar to classical generative phonology. In the theory of lexical phonology, the lexicon is given a key role and that represents a significant departure from classical models. In the following paper an outlook is given of what is meant by the term lexical phonology, and also a historical background to achieve a general overview. After having arranged the theory into linguistics and historical developments, there is a distinction between lexical and generative phonology. The relation between lexical phonology and morphology with its sharp distinction between lexical and postlexical rules, is presented afterwards. The interaction of phonology and morphology with the levels of representation will be explained to get to mechanisms of phonological changes and the output of phonology.
