Book excerpt: Most optical pulses, even at the 10-femtosecond timescale, consist of several oscillations of the electric field. By producing and amplifying an ultra-broadband continuum, single cycle (e 3 fs) or shorter optical pulses may be generated. This requires a very challenging pulse-compression with sub-femtosecond accuracy. Production of these single-cycle pulses will lead to new generations of experiments in the areas of coherent control of chemical excitations and reactions, 0.1-fs high-order harmonic (XUV) generation for probing of materials and fast processes, and selective 3-D micron-scale material removal and modification. We activated the first stage of a planned three-stage optical parametric amplifier (OPA) that would ultimately produce sub-3 fs pulses. Active control with a learning algorithm was implemented to optimize the continuum generated in an argon-filled capillary and to control and optimize the final compressed pulse temporal shape. A collaboration was initiated to coherently control the population of different states upon dissociation of Rb{sub 2}. Except for one final optic, a pulse compressor and diagnostics were constructed to produce and characterize pulses in the 5-fs range from the first OPA stage.

Book excerpt: This book covers the physics, technology and applications of short pulse laser sources that generate pulses with durations of only a few optical cycles. The basic design considerations for the different systems such as lasers, parametric amplifiers and external compression techniques which have emerged over the last decade are discussed to give researchers and graduate students a thorough introduction to this field. The existence of these sources has opened many new fields of research that were not possible before. These are UV and EUV generation from table-top systems using high-harmonic generation, frequency metrology enabling optical frequency counting, high-resolution optical coherence tomography, strong-field ultrafast solid-state processes and ultrafast spectroscopy, to mention only a few. Many new applications will follow. The book attempts to give a comprehensive, while not excessive, introduction to this exciting new field that serves both experienced researchers and graduate students entering the field. The first half of the book covers the current physical principles, processes and design guidelines to generate pulses in the optical range comprising only a few cycles of light. Such as the generation of relatively low energy pulses at high repetition rates directly from the laser, parametric generation of medium energy pulses and high-energy pulses at low repetition rates using external compression in hollow fibers. The applications cover the revolution in frequency metrology and high-resolution laser spectroscopy to electric field synthesis in the optical range as well as the emerging field of high-harmonic generation and attosecond science, high-resolution optical imaging and novel ultrafast dynamics in semiconductors. These fields benefit from the strong electric fields accompanying these pulses in solids and gases during events comprising only a few cycles of light.

Book excerpt: This book reports on the development of a pioneering light source architecture of the so-called Petawatt Field Synthesizer (PFS) system, which is based on short-pulse pumped, optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA), driven by a homemade, 1-ps diode-pumped Yb:YAG. At a few-cycle pulse duration of the amplified pulses, this architecture yields record levels of peak power and temporal contrast, the latter boasting a 100-times faster rise time from the noise level to peak intensity of the pulse compared to conventional laser systems. This allows investigation of the true laser–solid interaction without premature plasma expansion and without lossy pulse cleaning by e.g. plasma mirrors. The book describes several concepts for the generation of broadband, high-energy and high-contrast seed pulses, as well as the OPCPA development, few-cycle pulse compression and contrast characterization in a concise and insightful manner. The theory chapter serves as an excellent and accessible primer on OPCPA and other nonlinear interactions, while the experimental parts provide an excellent description of the challenges of developing such a novel architecture and some of the innovative solutions to overcome them.

Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to the relativistic (laser intensity above 1018 W/cm2) laser-plasma interactions, which mainly concerns two important aspects: ion acceleration and extreme-light-field (ELF). Based on the ultra-intense and ultra–short CP lasers, this book proposes a new method that significantly improves the efficiency of heavy-ion acceleration, and deals with the critical thickness issues of light pressure acceleration. More importantly, a series of plasma approaches for producing ELFs, such as the relativistic single-cycle laser pulse, the intense broad-spectrum chirped laser pulse and the ultra-intense isolated attosecond (10-18s) pulse are introduced. This book illustrates that plasma not only affords a tremendous accelerating gradient for ion acceleration but also serves as a novel medium for ELF generation, and hence has the potential of plasma-based optics, which have a great advantage on the light intensity due to the absence of device damage threshold.

Book excerpt: Generation of reproducible attosecond (10−18s) pulses is an exciting goal: in the same way as femtosecond pulses were used to make "movies" of the atomic motion in molecules, attosecond pulses could "uncover" the motion of electrons around nuclei. In this dissertation, we have suggested new ideas that will allow improving one scheme for obtaining such ultra-short pulses: The molecular modulation technique. In a theoretical proposal called Raman Additive technique, we have suggested a method that will allow (with a proper phase stabilization of generated sidebands) to obtain reproducible waveforms of arbitrary shape. An exciting range of possibilities could open up - not only for absolute phase control or sub-cycle shape control, but also for investigation of multiphoton ionization rates as a function of the sub-cycle shape. We have elaborated on the latter subject in another theoretical project, where we have exploited the unique feature of such ultrashort laser pulses, which is synchronization with molecular motion (rotational or vibrational), in order to investigate photoionization of molecules. From experimental point of view, a different construction of driving lasers than previously employed led to establishment of larger molecular coherences at higher operating pressure than in previous experiments. This resulted in simultaneous generation of rotational and vibrational sidebands with only two fields applied. In another experimental proposal using rotational transition in deuterium we have shown that employing a hollow waveguide instead of normal Raman cell improves the efficiency of the generation process. By optimizing gas pressure and waveguide geometry to compensate the dispersion, the method can be extended to efficiently generate Raman sidebands at a much lower energy of driving fields than previously employed. At the end, a very exciting possibility for controlling the molecular motion in a Raman driven system will be shown. Based on the interference effects (EIT like) that take place inside of a molecule, selectivity of different degrees of freedom can be achieved (for example switching from rotational-vibrational motion to pure rotational).

Current studies in this general field are going ahead at a full speed. The book present review chapters which give an overview on the major break throughs of recent years. It covers a number of different physical settings which are introduced when a nonlinearity is added to the underlying symmetric problems and its strength exceeds a certain critical value. The corresponding loss of symmetry, called spontaneous symmetry breaking, alias self-trapping into asymmetric states is extensively discussed in this book. The book presents both active theoretical studies of spontaneous symmetry breaking effects as well as experimental findings, chiefly for Bose-Einstein-Condensates with the self-repulsive nonlinearity, and also for photorefractive media in optics.

Book excerpt: We examine nonlinear laser pulse dynamics in plasma, encompassing both transverse and longitudinal envelope effects, in isolation and when coupled by the plasma. This is underpinned by an interest in how strong magnetic fields, aligned along the laser axis, modify these processes. In the presence of a strong magnetic field, such that the electron cyclotron frequency is on the order of the laser frequency, there is dramatic modification to the laser-plasma interactions, with the electron motion under left circularly polarised light remaining weakly-relativistic-like at laser intensities typically associated with fully-relativistic behaviour. Conversely right circularly polarised light sees the opposite effect, with the laser-plasma interactions becoming nonlinear at much lower light intensities. This affects all processes underpinned by relativistic motion of the electrons, chiefly self-focusing and self-compression. Such processes are studied in detail for both unmagnetised and magnetised plasma, and the results are compared. We find that not only does an external field alter the relativistic response of the electrons, but it also modifies the laser group and phase velocities, making the pulse shape of interest to the envelope dynamics. We apply this to study spherical compression of a laser pulse, wherein the pulse dimensions reduce symmetrically towards a single cycle. This process results in greatly amplified single-cycle pulses in the lambda-cubic regime, which may peak at over 100 times the initial laser intensity. Finally, the process by which a fully relativistic pulse may amplify an existing magnetic field is examined. We find that while this effect is known of for Laguerre-Gaussian light, it can also occur for linearly polarised light. The pondero motive effect of the laser, and the external field trapping particles which would otherwise escape, bends their trajectories such that a self-sustaining azimuthal current forms. This current scales with both laser intensity and plasma density, and may produce fields of up to 10 kilotesla. We offer that this work may be of interest for the manipulation of low-power or long-wavelength lasers in underdense plasma, the generation of single-cycle pulses for high-harmonic generation and the generation of localised, quasistatic ultra-intense magnetic fields.

Book excerpt: Recent technological breakthrough in the field of Terahertz radiation has triggered new applications in biology and biomedicine. Particularly, biological applications are based on the specific spectroscopic fingerprints of biological matter in this spectral region. Historically with the discovery of new electromagnetic wave spectrum, we have always discovered new medical diagnostic imaging systems. The use of terahertz wave was not realized due to the absence of useful terahertz sources. Now after successful generation of THz waves, it is reported that a great potential for THz wave exists for its resonance with bio-molecules. There are many challenging issues such as development of THz passive and active instrumentations, understanding of THz-Bio interaction for THz spectroscopy, THz-Bio nonlinear phenomena and safety guideline, and THz imaging systems. Eventually the deeper understanding of THz-Bio interaction and novel THz systems enable us to develop powerful THz biomedical imaging systems which can contribute to biomedical industry. This is a truly interdisciplinary field and convergence technology where the communication between different disciplines is the most challenging issue for the success of the great works. One of the first steps to promote the communications in this convergence technology would be teaching the basics of these different fields to the researchers in a plain language with the help of Convergence of Terahertz Science in Biomedical Systems which is considered to be 3-4th year college students or beginning level of graduate students. Therefore, this type of book can be used by many people who want to enter or understand this field. Even more it can be used for teaching in universities or research institutions.
