Book Synopsis The Report: Dubai 2014 by : Oxford Business Group
Download or read book The Report: Dubai 2014 written by Oxford Business Group and published by Oxford Business Group. This book was released on 2014-01-28 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many respects 2014 marked the transition from strong recovery to promising growth for Dubai. With many exciting projects in the pipeline, not least the hosting of Expo 2020, the emirate is continuing to build on its reputation as a dynamic and international centre for business. Already a regional and global centre for business and finance, Dubai’s reputation has been bolstered by the MSCI’s decision to upgrade the UAE from frontier to emerging market status in 2014, while the emirate’s successful Expo 2020 bid is expected to generate myriad opportunities for private investors across a range of sectors. Construction is thriving once again, driven in large part by strong retail sector growth, with various projects, including plans for the world’s largest mall, indicating that the sector will maintain its position as the emirate’s biggest GDP contributor moving forward. The transport and logistics framework is set for major expansion in the coming years as well, furthering cementing the emirate’s status as a leading transport and logistics hub not just regionally, but globally too. The continued development of Dubai’s retail and hospitality offerings, alongside the upgrades to its airports, should help to ensure robust growth in visitor numbers from both the region and further afield.

Book excerpt: Dubai has continued to meet its targets in becoming the global capital of Islamic finance, nearly doubling the number of sukuk (Islamic bonds) listings on its exchanges since 2017. Furthermore, eased policy restrictions to encourage foreign investment and the 2019 budget’s continued commitment to infrastructure development ahead of Expo 2020 are expected to continue driving economic activity. As one of the most diversified economies in the region, Dubai continues to present growth opportunities in various sectors including tourism, logistics, manufacturing and education. Although the emirate has benefitted from its proximity to oil and gas fields, Dubai is right at the forefront of the emerging cleaner energy world, and developing and promoting renewable technologies, including solar energy and electric vehicles.

Download or read book Dubai written by Syed Ali and published by Yale.ORIM. This book was released on 2010-05-28 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revealing portrait of the famously wealthy Persian Gulf city investigates the human cost of its miraculous rise to global prominence. In less than two decades, Dubai has transformed itself from an obscure territory of the United Arab Emirates into a global center for business, tourism, and luxury living. With astonishing skyscrapers and tax-free incomes, its rulers have made Dubai into a playground for the global elite while skillfully downplaying its systemic human rights abuses and suppression of dissent. It is a fascinating case study in light-speed urban development, massive immigration, and vertiginous inequality. In Dubai: Gilded Cage, sociologist Syed Ali delves beneath the dazzling surface to analyze how—and at what cost—Dubai has achieved its success. Ali brings alive a society rigidly divided between expatriate Westerners enjoying opulent lifestyles on short-term work visas, native Emiratis who are largely passive observers, and workers from the developing world who provide the manual labor and domestic service needed to keep the emirate running, often at great personal cost. “At last, a comprehensive expose of the economic and sexual exploitation that erected this utopia of greed. Syed Ali has seen the future in Dubai and it doesn’t work.” —Mike Davis, author of Planet of Slums

Book excerpt: Financial services in particular is one non-oil area where the emirate is starting to pull ahead, with recent growth in the Islamic financial services segment fuelling the emirate's ambition of becoming the knowledge-based capital of the Islamic economy in the future. Meanwhile, Dubai's real estate and construction sectors, which were badly affected by the 2008 financial meltdown, are once again thriving as the legacies of the global crisis recede, and the debts incurred from that time are repaid and restructured. Indeed Dubai is now firmly focused on the future, with preparations for Dubai Expo 2020 in particular helping nourish its economic recovery, development and growth in recent years. The event is expected to attract 25m visitors over a six-month period and the build-up is driving development across several sectors. The preparations,
Book Synopsis The Economy of Dubai by : Abdulrazak Al Faris
Download or read book The Economy of Dubai written by Abdulrazak Al Faris and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-28 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last 50 years, Dubai has transformed itself from a small fishing and trading village into an integrated, modern, and vibrant economy. The development process was initiated by oil richness but, unlike most other oil exporters, it has successfully diversified away from hydrocarbons with the creation of world-class clusters of financial services, tourism, and trading activities. Understandably, Dubai has become a model of economic development not only for the other six emirates that comprise the UAE, but also for most regional economies. Indeed, its success in diversifying its economic base makes Dubai an interesting case study for any resource-dependent economy wishing to achieve sustainable prosperity by engaging in better-balanced growth paths than those typically induced by the exploitation of natural resources. This book provides a comprehensive economic and historical account of the evolution of the economy of Dubai since the foundation of the United Arab Emirates in 1971. It focuses on its transformations and experiences and the roles played by government policies and private sector initiatives. Based on solid analysis, it provides a perspective and policy recommendations on the way forward in an intensely increasing competitive global economy.

Book Synopsis Transnational Generations in the Arab Gulf States and Beyond by : Kyoko Matsukawa
Download or read book Transnational Generations in the Arab Gulf States and Beyond written by Kyoko Matsukawa and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the recent migration phenomenon in the Arab Gulf states for work and residence. It sheds light on the transnationality of diverse groups of migrants from different generations, and unpacks how migrants’ multiple senses of belonging, orientations and adaptive strategies have shaped contemporary migration in the Gulf region. In turn, the analysis presented here shows how the Arab Gulf states’ citizenship and educational policies affect second-generation migrants in particular. Through a series of fine-grained ethnographic case studies, the authors demonstrate the ways in which these second-generation migrants construct their identities in relation to their putative ‘home’ country in the Gulf as well as their complex relationship to their parents’ countries of origin. This is what underpins the deeply transnational character of their lives, choices and notions of belonging. While migration scholars often situate these groups as ‘temporary’, this does not in fact capture the reality of temporariness for the migrants themselves, their children or their dependants. The result is a complex and ongoing construction of identity that shapes the way of life for millions of migrants. Relevant to scholars of migration and international studies, particularly focused on the Middle East, Transnational Generations in the Arab Gulf States and Beyond is also of interest to social scientists researching student mobility in higher education, intergenerational families, identity politics and globalisation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in engaging and approachable prose, Migration, Incorporation, and Change in an Interconnected World covers the bulk of material a student needs to get a good sense of the empirical and theoretical trends in the field of migration studies, while being short enough that professors can easily build their courses around it without hesitating to assign additional readings. Taking a unique approach, Ali and Hartmann focus on what they consider the important topics and the potential route the field is going to take, and incorporate a conceptual lens that makes this much more than a simple relaying of facts.
