Book excerpt: Excerpt from Generating Economic Cycles Among the rare books in the library where I am writing there is a first edition of Galileo's treatise Dialogo sopra i due massimi sistemi del mondo, Tolemaico e Copernicano. This was the work that brought him before the Roman Inquisition. By the Holy Office he was convicted "of believing and holding the doctrines - false and contrary to the Holy and Divine Scriptures - that the Sun is the centre of the world, and that it does not move from east to west, and that the Earth does move and is not the centre of the world; also that an opinion can be held and supported as probable after it has been declared and decreed contrary to the Holy Scriptures," and he was required by the Holy Office to "abjure, curse, and detest the aforesaid errors." Intolerance of unwonted views was not limited to the Holy Office. Galileo himself could close the windows of his mind and vent his critical scorn upon an adventurous colleague. In the fourth chapter of his fatal book there is a discussion of the theory of terrestrial tides which was the occasion of Galileo's treating with disdain the suggestion of Kepler that the tides are dependent upon the attraction of the Moon. This is done for well known reasons of analytic and computational simplicity with a quadratic return function the decision rules are linear and may be easily determined. To compute the optimal decision rules numerically via standard value iteration procedures is simply too intensive when the number of decision and state variables is large. Nevertheless, it is legitimate to question the extent to which accuracy is compromised using such approximate procedures. The original model aggregates all capital producing firms into a single sector and generates a large amplitude self-sustained oscillation with a period of roughly 50 years. We disaggregate the model into two coupled industries. One representing production of plant and long-lived infrastructure and the other short-lived equipment and machinery. While holding the aggregate equilibrium characteristics of the model constant. We investigate how mode-locking occurs as a function of the difference in capital lifetimes and the strength of the coupling between the sectors. Disaggrega tion allows new modes of behavior to arise: In addition to mode-locking we observe cascades of period-doubling bifurcations. Chaos. Intermittency. And quasi-periodic be havior. Despite the introduction of these additional modes. The basic behavior of the model is robust to the aggregation assumption. We consider the likely effects of finer disaggregation. The introduction of additional coupling mechanisms such as prices. And other avenues for the exploration of aggregation in system dynamics models.
