Book excerpt: Excerpt from Generating Economic Cycles Among the rare books in the library where I am writing there is a first edition of Galileo's treatise Dialogo sopra i due massimi sistemi del mondo, Tolemaico e Copernicano. This was the work that brought him before the Roman Inquisition. By the Holy Office he was convicted "of believing and holding the doctrines - false and contrary to the Holy and Divine Scriptures - that the Sun is the centre of the world, and that it does not move from east to west, and that the Earth does move and is not the centre of the world; also that an opinion can be held and supported as probable after it has been declared and decreed contrary to the Holy Scriptures," and he was required by the Holy Office to "abjure, curse, and detest the aforesaid errors." Intolerance of unwonted views was not limited to the Holy Office. Galileo himself could close the windows of his mind and vent his critical scorn upon an adventurous colleague. In the fourth chapter of his fatal book there is a discussion of the theory of terrestrial tides which was the occasion of Galileo's treating with disdain the suggestion of Kepler that the tides are dependent upon the attraction of the Moon. Book excerpt: During our lifetime we experience any number of business cycle crises which undermine our confidence and lead many to their ruin. We also experience the ‘happy days’ when our faith in the future becomes almost limitless, and when we forget that tides always turn again. So how can we better understand and predict these cycles? To answer these questions Lars Tvede takes us through a story that moves back in time to the Scottish gambler and financial genius, John Law, and then on to the distracted Adam Smith, the stockbroker Ricardo, the investment banker Thornton, the extrovert Schumpeter, the speculator Gould and many others to trace the theory and reality of business cycles, as it has evolved over 300 years. Gradually we reach the computer jugglers of the modern day who, with giant networks of equations, try to solve the same questions that have attracted the attention of classical economists throughout the centuries. Lars Tvede concludes this historical journey with a summary of what the core of the problem is and how modern understanding of business cycles can be used to forecast economic fluctuations. The final sections of the book provide detailed studies and explanations to of how stocks, bonds, hedge funds, private equity funds, gold, diamonds, exchange rates, real estate, commodities, art and collectibles, and numerous sub-sectors of some of these markets each behave over different categories of business cycles.

This book considers business cycles over three epochs 1870-1913, 1919-1938 and the post-World War II period. It provides an analysis of the key macroeconomic questions relating to economic fluctuations. Why are the ups and down more volatile in some epochs than others? Why are some business cycle shocks more persistent in their effects? Is there an international business cycle? Can present business cycle features predict future patterns? What impact will institutional changes, such as EMU have on future fluctuations?

Book excerpt: This book presents several pieces of empirical work which disentangle why the standard measure of productivity growth used in macroeconomics turn out to be procyclical for American manufacturing industries. Procyclical productivity is an essential feature of business cycles because of its important implications for macroeconomic modelling. The author explains why traditional Keynesian theories of the business cycle do not explain satisfactorily why productivity is procyclical, and argues that the force of technology for generating economic cycles is much more important than that of the management or mismanagement of monetary or fiscal policies. This book is aimed at those working in empirical macroeconomics but also industrial economics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a realistic account of what goes on within a business cycle. The recurrent phases of economic activity - prosperity, crisis, depression, and revival - grow into and out of each other. They are here examined in terms of the characteristics and observed behavior of the economic system. Originally published in 1913, Mitchell's germinal and familiar work marked the beginning of a distinctly new approach to the analysis of business cycles. The present volume, which is Part III of the larger work, has since become the classic statement of a theory of their causes. One of the reasons for its durability is not far to seek: it was woven out of observed phenomena of the money economy, not spun out of airy postulates. Original contributions to economic theory outlast the individual and temporal variations which the annals of business and the tables of statistics show. This is such a contribution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, economic growth and business cycles have been treated independently. However, the dependence of GDP levels on its history of shocks, what economists refer to as “hysteresis,” argues for unifying the analysis of growth and cycles. In this paper, we review the recent empirical and theoretical literature that motivate this paradigm shift. The renewed interest in hysteresis has been sparked by the persistence of the Global Financial Crisis and fears of a slow recovery from the Covid-19 crisis. The findings of the recent literature have far-reaching conceptual and policy implications. In recessions, monetary and fiscal policies need to be more active to avoid the permanent scars of a downturn. And in good times, running a high-pressure economy could have permanent positive effects.
