Book Synopsis Eyelid Myoclonia with Absences by : John S. Duncan
Download or read book Eyelid Myoclonia with Absences written by John S. Duncan and published by John Libbey Eurotext. This book was released on 1996 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eyelid myoclonia with absences is a recently described and under-recognised syndrome of idiopathic generalised epilepsy. The diagnosis may be confused with tics, attempts at self induction, and epilepsy syndromes with a better prognosis such as childhood absence epilepsy. This book summarises current knowledge on the topic; covering the underlying anatomy and physiology of the eyelids, the clinical and electro-encephalographic features and differential diagnosis in children and adults, including a discussion on the issue of self-induction of absences. The current state of knowledge on inheritance and genetics of the condition and treatment strategies are considered. Throughout, recent advances in the field are couched in an historical context, making this book a comprehensive source for all those who need to understand this syndrome whether from a research standpoint or the clinical management of affected children and adults. As such it will be of value to neurologists, epileptologists and those involved in the care and treatment of epileptic patients.

Book Synopsis Generalized Seizures: From Clinical Phenomenology to Underlying Systems and Networks by : Edouard HIRSCH
Download or read book Generalized Seizures: From Clinical Phenomenology to Underlying Systems and Networks written by Edouard HIRSCH and published by John Libbey Eurotext. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book is the fruit of a workshop, designed as a discussion forum, with the participation of experts from all over the world, to extensively review clinical, neurophysiological and fundamental research available data in order to generate new axes for research, clinical practice and care. The first section traces back to the definitions and concepts underlying the terms “generalized seizures and epilepsies”. Section II reviews human and animal data suggesting that the brainstem network plays an important role for tonic seizures generation. The third and fourth sections analyze recent knowledge on cortico-thalamic and basal ganglia networks in absence and myoclonic seizures, both in animal models and in humans. The fifth section compares the phenomenology of “Primary versus Secondary Tonico-clonic seizures”, including animal data, clinical expression in humans and genetics. Section VI goes back to the discussion “Cortical” versus “Centrencephalic” theories. The last two chapters thoroughly review the clinical applications of current knowledge, in terms of pharmacological approach and clinical care.
Book Synopsis How to Read an EEG by : Neville M. Jadeja
Download or read book How to Read an EEG written by Neville M. Jadeja and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-15 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The EEG is a simple and widely available neurophysiological test that, if interpreted correctly, can provide valuable insight into the functioning of the brain. However, despite its increasing usage in a range of settings, there is a common misconception that the EEG is inherently difficult to interpret. Compounding the problem is the lack of dedicated training and no standardized approach by encephalographers. This book provides a clear and concise guide to reading and interpreting EEGs in a systematic way. Presented in three sections, the first delivers foundational technical knowledge of how EEGs work, and the second concentrates on a comprehensive, stepwise approach to reading and interpreting an EEG. The third section contains examples of EEGs in common scenarios, such as seizures and post-cardiac arrest, enabling readers to correlate their findings to clinical indications. Heavily illustrated with over 200 example EEGs, this is an essential pocket guide to interpreting these tests.

Download or read book Generalized Epilepsy written by AVOLI and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been intense interest in the basic mechanisms of epilepsy. Many symposia and monographs have been devoted to this topic. These reviews, however, have focused almost exclusively on studies performed in models of partial (or focal) epilepsy. It was natural that scientists interested in the fundamental mechanism of epileptogenesis at the cellular level were attracted to work on models in which the epileptogenic dysfunction could be confined to ever-smaller populations of neurons. Many of the most illuminating studies done in this field in the recent past have been carried out in vitro on brain slices or on dissociated neuronal cultures. Much valuable insight into the mechanisms of epileptogenesis has been obtained in this manner. One cannot, however, automatically assume that mechanisms elucidated in such exquisitely "focal" models are applicable to forms of epilepsy in which seizures from their very start involve the entire brain. One of the most difficult questions that arises in this context is how epileptogenic dysfunction, which can be understood in terms of mechanisms involving a few contiguous cells, can lead to what appears to be a simultaneous onset of seizure discharge in virtually all areas of the brain. Most of the workers who have made excellent contributions to the understanding of the cellular mechanisms involved in epileptogenesis have paid virtually no attention to this important problem.

Book Synopsis Epileptic Syndromes in Infancy, Childhood and Adolescence - 5th edition by : Bureau Michelle
Download or read book Epileptic Syndromes in Infancy, Childhood and Adolescence - 5th edition written by Bureau Michelle and published by John Libbey Eurotext. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ultimate reference book : the 5th updated edition of the famous “blue guide”. Incluided : A DVD with new sequences completes each chapter! Epileptology changes. The syndromic approach is completed by an etiological approach, based on the major advances in genetics and functional genetics. New entities have found their place, and a purely descriptive, “electroclinical” approach is no longer adapted in many circumstances. The 5th edition of the Blue Guide includes the most recent advances. It was necessary to justify the physiological, epidemiologic, genetic and therapeutic approaches and to consider them in the light of the new classification efforts, which are still in the making. Nevertheless, the description of epileptic syndromes, both classical and recent, remains at the core of this book.
