Book Synopsis The Fall and Recapture of Detroit in the War of 1812 by : Anthony J. Yanik
Download or read book The Fall and Recapture of Detroit in the War of 1812 written by Anthony J. Yanik and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Details the first major U.S. setback in the War of 1812 and analyzes the background and aftermath of Hull’s surrender. The focus of the opening campaign of the War of 1812 was Detroit, a location the War Department considered one of the significant launching points for the invasion of Canada. Detroit’s surrender only two months after the declaration of war shocked the nation and led to the court-martial of Brigadier General William Hull. Hull was sentenced to death—the only commanding general ever to receive such a sentence in U.S. military history—and has been vilified by many historians to the present day for his decision to surrender. In The Fall and Recapture of Detroit in the War of 1812: In Defense of William Hull, author Anthony J. Yanik reconsiders Hull’s abrupt surrender and the general’s defense that the decision was based on sound humanitarian grounds. Yanik begins by tracing the political roots of the War of 1812 and giving readers an idea of what life was like in the tiny frontier settlement of Detroit in the years leading up to the war. He moves on to Hull’s appointment as brigadier general and the assembly of the North Western Army in the summer of 1812, culminating in their arduous journey to Detroit and botched invasion of Canada. Yanik then details Hull’s surrender and its repercussions for Detroit, including life under British rule and the eventual recapture of Detroit by American forces. Yanik also probes the general’s court-martial for cowardice in 1814, arguing that a close examination of the testimony of the witnesses, an analysis of Hull’s defense, and a review of the actual events themselves raise many questions about the credibility of the verdict that was issued. Including a chronology of Hull’s Detroit campaign and appendixes with historical writings and speeches from the officials involved in the war effort, The Fall and Recapture of Detroit in the War of 1812 will be enjoyable reading for military and local historians, just in time for the upcoming bicentennial anniversary of the War of 1812.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1812, Hull reluctantly accepted a commission as brigadier-general and the command of the army to defend the Michigan Territory and attack Upper Canada from Detroit. Hull made a suggestion to the Madison administration that a superior American force at Detroit might force the British to abandon their ships, thus allowing the Americans to take possession of these ships and saving the government the cost of building a fleet. In July of 1812, he arrived in Detroit and a short time later crossed into Amherstberg with his superior force, but he delayed the invasion assuming that the Canadian militia would desert. From that point, it all went wrong: His communications were cut off by the British and the Indians, the British captured Fort Mackinac, British forces reached Amherstberg, Hull returned to Detroit where he eventually surrendered his army. The court martial tried him for treason, cowardice and neglect of duty; he was found guilty on the last two charges and sentenced to be shot. Pres. Madison, who went along with Hull's suggestion, fully supported the decision but remanded the execution due to Hull's service in the Revolution.

War Of 1812.--Governor Hull Affointed Brigadier, general To Lead The Troofs From Ohio To Detroit.--March To Detroit.--Invasion Of Canada.--Fall Of Michilimackinac, And Subsequent Events. In February, 1812, Governor Hull being at Washington, received accounts from the Territory of Michigan, that the Indians were becoming hostile to the defenceless inhabitants of that exposed frontier.* He urged upon the administration the expediency of providing a force for their protection. War with Great Britain was imminent: Congress was augmenting the'army, and messages had been sent by the British officers in Canada to all the powerful tribes of the Northwest; accompanied with presents of arms or clothing, urging them to take part with Great Britain, their natural ally. Accordingly, the President called upon the Governor of Ohio to detach twelve hundred militia, and prepare them for actual service. These militia were to be joined by the 4th United States regiment, then at Post St. Vincennes. After these arrangements were made, the Secretary of War, Mr. Eustis, stated to Governor Hull, that it was the wish of the President to appoint him to the command of these troops, with the fank of Brigadier-General, in order that he should march them to Detroit. * Hull's Memoirs of the Campaign of 1812, page 15. Governor Hull declined the appointment in the most unqualified manner, stating that it was not his wish to receive any military appointment. Colonel Kingsbury was then ordered to Washington, to take command of these troops, and to receive his instructions to that end. He fell sick on his arrival, and became thus unable to perform the duty. The proposition being again made to Governor Hull, he finally consented to accept any military appointment, .
