The curve r is assumed to be the union of s + 1 nonintersecting simple smooth closed contours rOo r •. . . • rs which form the positively l oriented boundary of a finitely connected bounded domain in t. Our main requirement on the symbol W is that on each contour rj the function W is the restriction of a rational matrix function Wj which does not have poles and zeros on rj and at infinity. Using the realization theorem from system theory (see. e. g . • [1]. Chapter 2) the rational matrix function Wj (which differs from contour to contour) may be written in the form 1 (0. 1) W . (A) = I + C. (A - A. f B. A E r· J J J J J where Aj is a square matrix of size nj x n• say. B and C are j j j matrices of sizes n. x m and m x n . • respectively. and the matrices A. J x J J and Aj = Aj - BjC have no eigenvalues on r . (In (0. 1) the functions j j Wj are normalized to I at infinity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book has a dual purpose. The first is to expose a general methodology to solve problems of electromagnetism in geometries constituted of angular regions. The second is to bring the solutions of some canonical problems of fundamental importance in modern electromagnetic engineering with the use of the Wiener-Hopf technique. In particular, the general mathematical methodology is very ingenious and original. It is based on sophisticated and attractive procedures exploiting simple and advanced properties of analytical functions. Once the reader has acquired the methodology, she/he can easily obtain the solution of the canonical problems reported in the book. The book can be appealing also to readers who are not directly interested in the detailed mathematical methodology and/ or in electromagnetics. In fact the same methodology can be extended to acoustics and elasticity problems. Moreover, the proposed practical problems with their solutions constitute a list of reference solutions and can be of interests in engineering production in the field of radio propagations, electromagnetic compatibility and radar technologies.

Book excerpt: At almost all academic institutions worldwide, complex variables and analytic functions are utilized in courses on applied mathematics, physics, engineering, and other related subjects. For most students, formulas alone do not provide a sufficient introduction to this widely taught material, yet illustrations of functions are sparse in current books on the topic. This is the first primary introductory textbook on complex variables and analytic functions to make extensive use of functional illustrations. Aiming to reach undergraduate students entering the world of complex variables and analytic functions, this book utilizes graphics to visually build on familiar cases and illustrate how these same functions extend beyond the real axis. It covers several important topics that are omitted in nearly all recent texts, including techniques for analytic continuation and discussions of elliptic functions and of Wiener–Hopf methods. It also presents current advances in research, highlighting the subject’s active and fascinating frontier. The primary audience for this textbook is undergraduate students taking an introductory course on complex variables and analytic functions. It is also geared toward graduate students taking a second semester course on these topics, engineers and physicists who use complex variables in their work, and students and researchers at any level who want a reference book on the subject.

Book excerpt: This proceedings volume gathers selected, peer-reviewed papers from the "Modern Methods, Problems and Applications of Operator Theory and Harmonic Analysis VIII" (OTHA 2018) conference, which was held in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, in April 2018. The book covers a diverse range of topics in advanced mathematics, including harmonic analysis, functional analysis, operator theory, function theory, differential equations and fractional analysis – all fields that have been intensively developed in recent decades. Direct and inverse problems arising in mathematical physics are studied and new methods for solving them are presented. Complex multiparameter objects that require the involvement of operators with variable parameters and functional spaces, with fractional and even variable exponents, make these approaches all the more relevant. Given its scope, the book will especially benefit researchers with an interest in new trends in harmonic analysis and operator theory, though it will also appeal to graduate students seeking new and intriguing topics for further investigation.

The main topics of the conference were !> Factorization Theory; !> Factorization and Integrable Systems; !> Operator Theoretical Methods in Diffraction Theory; !> Algebraic Techniques in Operator Theory; !> Applications to Mathematical Physics and Related Topics. A total of 94 colleagues from 21 countries participated in the conference. The major part of participants came from Portugal (32), Germany (17), Israel (6), Mexico (6), the Netherlands (5), USA (4) and Austria (4). The others were from Ukraine, Venezuela (3 each), Spain, Sweden (2 each), Algeria, Australia, Belorussia, France, Georgia, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Russia and Turkey (one of each country). It was the 12th meeting in the framework of the IWOTA conferences which started in 1981 on an initiative of Professors 1. Gohberg (Tel Aviv) and J. W. Helton (San Diego). Up to now, it was the largest conference in the field of Operator Theory in Portugal.

This volume focuses on mathematical methods and applications of probability and statistics in the context of general harmonic analysis and its numerous applications. The two volumes cover new trends and advances in several very important fields of mathematics, developed intensively over the last decade. The relevance of this topic is related to the study of complex multi-parameter objects required when considering operators and objects with variable parameters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents some aspects of the theory of semigroups of operators, mostly from the point of view of its interaction withspectral theory. In order to make it self-contained, a concise description of the basic theory of semigroups, with complete proofs, is included in Part I. Some of the author's recent results, such as the construction of the Hille-Yosida space for general operators, the semi-simplicity manifold, and a Taylor formula for semigroups as functions of their generator, are also included in Part I. Part II describes recent generalizations (most of them in bookform for the first time), including pre-semigroups, semi-simplicity manifolds in situations more general than that considered in Part I, semigroups of unbounded symmetric operators, and an analogous result on "local cosine families" and semi-analytic vectors. It is hoped that this book will inspire more research in this field. This book will be of particular interest to graduate students and researchers working operator theory and its applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harmonic maps and the related theory of minimal surfaces are variational problems of long standing in differential geometry. Many important advances have been made in understanding harmonic maps of Riemann surfaces into symmetric spaces. In particular, ""twistor methods"" construct some, and in certain cases all, such mappings from holomorphic data. These notes develop techniques applicable to more general homogeneous manifolds, in particular a very general twistor result is proved. When applied to flag manifolds, this wider viewpoint allows many of the previously unrelated twistor results for symmetric spaces to be brought into a unified framework. These methods also enable a classification of harmonic maps into full flag manifolds to be established, and new examples are constructed. The techniques used are mostly a blend of the theory of compact Lie groups and complex differential geometry. This book should be of interest to mathematicians with experience in differential geometry and to theoretical physicists.
