Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of hypnotism has greatly evolved in recent years. Since the publication of the successful award-winning first edition of this book, some 1,200 research and clinical articles on hypnotism have been published in American journals alone and a multitude of related books have been written. With so many important contributions in this field occurring in such a short time, there is great need for a resource that reflects the current thinking and incorporates the latest techniques. The Practice of Hypnotism, Second Edition is that resource, providing the most up-to-date information available on hypnotism and hypnotherapy. Written by André Weitzenhoffer, PhD, a leading expert in the field for over forty-five years, the book examines the past and present thinking about hypnotic phenomena in an objective fashion. It provides valuable background information, ideas for future research, and a wealth of detailed, practical instruction for the production of hypnotic phenomena and the treatment of a large variety of health-related problems. Like the first edition, this book aims to present hypnotism from a scientific perspective. It also includes the bases upon which the author and others in the field have made their judgments, enabling the reader to make independent determinations based on the most complete information. The Practice of Hypnotism has evolved from the original two-volume set to a single, comprehensive volume in two parts: Foundations of Suggestion and Hypnosis; Clinical Hypnotism and Other Applications. Each chapter presents basic material at a relatively elementary level, gradually moving into the more advanced material at a comfortable pace. This Second Edition features a wealth of new information that reflects the latest findings of research and clinical experience in using hypnotism, including: Complete rewrites of chapters on measurements relevant to and on the state of hypnosis New chapters on suggestion and suggestibility and the treatment of anxiety A revised chapter on self-hypnosis, includ ing a detailed training procedure Expanded and reorganized material on the Ericksonian approach“LI>Major revisions regarding the socio-cognitive and the cognitive-behavioral positions on hypnotic phenomena Suggestions for future research For the effective, safe, and well-informed practice of hypnotism, The Practice of Hypnotism, Second Edition is the definitive resource. It addresses the special interests and needs of practicing health care professionals, researchers, and other professionals; those new to hypnotism; and seasoned readers looking for accurate facts and a different scientific viewpoint on the subject. Like the first edition, this edition will also serve well as a textbook for self-study or to complement courses. A newly revised, thoroughly updated edition of the most complete resource on hypnotism and hypnotherapy. Designed to help researchers, health care providers, and other professionals safely and confidently produce and use hypnosis, The Practice of Hypnotism, Second Edition is filled with the most up-to-date information available on hypnotism and its techniques. Offering the same comprehensive coverage as the very successful two-volume set of the first edition, it provides highly practical instruction on producing hypnotic effects and treating a wide variety of health and behavioral problems, and examines current thinking on these subjects. Written by a leading expert in the field, this book reports on the latest research findings and clinical experience, and includes many sections that have been extensively revised and expanded to cover recent developments.

Book excerpt: Visualize how you are hypnotizing a person who then with great relish devours yummy apples although they are actually potatoes. Or your subject is convinced that the color "YELLOW" is actual called "RED." You can be assured of an astonished audience admiring your new abilities and skills. As a "byproduct", the hypnotizer slowly becomes aware of his or her private and professional success and the associated limitless confidence and self-efficacy that the new and powerful abilities generate. He or she is admired and held in high esteem – life is good. With the self-help method MODERN HYPNOSIS TECHNIQUE, Tony Gaschler has combined only tried and proven hypnosis techniques used in many highly interesting hypnosis experiments into a method. You will learn about modern hypnosis techniques and methods as they are practiced around the globe today – no prior knowledge is required – you will learn everything you need to know to be able to hypnotize others successfully, and you will learn this in a systematic and gradual manner. After many years of research and based on the successes of numerous hypnosis techniques from the world over, the specialized author and hypnosis expert Tony Gaschler developed this unique easy method leading to quick success. You learn SELF-HYPNOSIS that can serve to improve your life in so many ways: to eliminate bothersome habits and characteristics such as nervousness, listlessness, lack of energy, lack of drive, smoking, excessive weight, tensions, etc. and even some emotional inhibitions. You will also learn ADVANCED SELF-HYPNOSIS techniques used, among others, to increase performance, eliminate pain, or influence others. These advanced techniques are practiced by athletes, politicians, traditional healers, and on radio, TV, at events, etc. Nonmedical practitioners and physicians can also benefit from the Modern Hypnosis Technique. Of course, you can also use your acquired skills to astonish and surprise your family, friends, and acquaintances as the excerpts from the following three experiments shows: An EXPERIMENT with FALSE MEMORY: Hand the test subject a piece of paper listing a very long number. For example, something similar to this: 164839244312673, 778241983711893. Tell the subject: "Please read and memorize this number. Once I take the piece of paper away after a few seconds, you will have memorized the entire number and can write it down." Then take the piece of paper away from the test subject and say: "And now you are able to write down the entire number without errors just from memory." Remember: Each suggestion must be canceled by a counter-suggestion. An EXPERIMENT with FALSE PERCEPTION: Tell the VP the following while handing him or her a peeled onion: "I am giving you here a nice, juicy apple! Eat it, you will love its taste and it's good for you!" The subject will think of the onion as an apple and actually eat it like an apple. A counter-suggestion is here not required since no effect continues after the action has been completed. An EXPERIMENT with POST-HYPNOSIS: You can also use a subject and post-hypnosis, an action that is to be carried out at a later time. Example: "Call me at 8 in the evening to tell me that you cannot visit me tomorrow. When I ask you why you cannot come, you tell me you don't have time!" Remember: All these experiments must have a clearly defined effective start and end of a suggestion. Never allow an effect to continue after the hypnosis without first canceling with a counter-suggestion. The listed experiments were just a small excerpt from the many possible hypnosis techniques. Moreover, you can also use your own creative ideas to develop and carry out new and interesting experiments. The number of fantastic possibilities is endless once your have learned the methods provided by the Modern Hypnosis Technique instructions.

Book excerpt: Despite more than two centuries of having tacitly recognized its enormous potential utility, the phenomenon of hypnosis has always been commonly regarded with outright Fear and Loathing. How is it possible that something as beneficial to humanity as hypnosis ever came to be viewed in such a horrible manner? I intend to show that the history of hypnotism provides us with the clue to this unfortunate legacy; and I've neither spared anyone's feelings nor pulled any punches in this quest to reveal the shamefully appalling level of incompetence and ignorance that has characterized the (mis)use of this phenomenon since its discovery by Mesmer more than two hundred years ago.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been said that "hypnosis is a collection of techniques in need of a unifying theory." (James A. Hall, Hypnosis: A Jungian Perspective). While the varied substrates of these techniques preclude the formation of any one theory of hypnosis, this volume presents a "state-of-the-science" view of existing theories of hypnosis. Written by eminent scholars and researchers, this uniquely authoritative resource also provides a wealth of information about the history of hypnosis, clinical and research perspectives on hypnosis, and the strengths and weaknesses of empirical methods used to address crucial theoretical questions. The streamlined organization of the volume facilitates the reader's ability to contrast and compare research findings and concepts across theories. In the introductory chapters, the editors describe hypnosis paradigms and schools of thought, including major points of convergence and divergence, as well as a broad vista of different perspectives on the history of hypnosis. The theoretical chapters that follow present definitive statements by an international array of eminent scholars who are at the forefront of conceptual advances in the realms of clinical and experimental hypnosis. Their contributions, written in lively first-person narratives, explore current thinking about hypnosis and represent important clinical and research traditions that extend beyond the territory of hypnosis to mainstream psychology. Providing a thorough discussion of hypnotic phenomena, the book tackles tough questions such as whether hypnosis evokes an altered state of consciousness; whether hypnotic behavior is involuntary; whether hypnotizability is stable, trait-like, and modifiable; and whether hypnotic and non-hypnotic behavior can be distinguished in meaningful ways. The diversity of viewpoints, including competitive ones, illuminates the debates which have expanded the frontiers of knowledge about hypnosis. In the concluding section, the editors compare and contrast these theories, discuss pertinent research issues, and lay out an agenda for future research. Given its stellar list of contributors and the unique niche it occupies as the first authoritative survey of its kind, THEORIES OF HYPNOSIS is of value to anyone interested in the topic. The editors' ten years of experience teaching hypnosis to psychology and medical students has resulted in a book with enormous appeal to students and instructors, as well as clinicians and researchers. A wide variety of professionals--academics, clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, dentists--will find it an authoritative introduction and invaluable reference to this still-growing, ever-fascinating field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practice of yoga, hypnosis, and the use of psychedelic drugs to alter psychological and physiological states is not unknown to the study of psychology. They have been called "soft" studies and labeled unimportant. This is mostly because they are difficult to study and understand, often focusing on unobservable internal states such as altered states of consciousness, Samadhi, or hypnotic states. This book, in its approach to thinking about this topic and method for analysis, focuses only on phenomena that can be observed, such as behavioral changes. By centering on only those aspects of the psychological and physiological effects of yoga, hypnosis, and psychedelic drugs which can be measured and analyzed using this new method, Barber distinguishes this book from others in the field. He asks what overt behaviors and verbal reports are clearly observable when psychedelic drugs are taken, yoga is practiced, or hypnotic-induction procedures are administered. Instead of treating the phenomena traditionally associated with psychedelic drugs, yoga, or hypnosis as undifferentiated conglomerates, an attempt will be made to set apart and treat separately each of the many phenomena associated with each of these areas of inquiry. This book does not set out to simply demonstrate the importance of psychedelics, yoga, and hypnosis, or to present substantive material pertaining to these topics. It also treats each topic as continuous with other known psychological phenomena and as an important piece to the puzzle of social psychology. It differs from most previous treatises in that it does not assume that psychedelics, yoga, and hypnosis can bring out unused mental or physical capacities in man, heighten awareness or give rise to enhanced creativity, or produce altered states of consciousness, suspension of conventional reality-orientation, changes in body-image, or changes in perception.
