Excerpt: ...back the shunting-signal, and placing it under the control of the signalman in the yard-cabin. hid 20th September.----An excursion-train returning from Southend to Fenchurch-Street' came into collision, in approaching the Barking Station, 240 yards inside the distant-signal, and on a rising gradient of l in 264, with the rear of a preceding excursion-train returning also from Southend. Between 60 and 70 passengers were stated to be injured, and one was killed: The engine-driver of the second train, who knew he was likely to be stopped at Barking might have seen the light of the distant-signal for 700 yards, and the tail-lights of the first train for at least 500 or 600 yards. This engine-driver ought, however, to have received a caution-signal at Rainham, which was not exhibited; and the Barking distant-signal-light was not a good one, or far enough from the station. There was one guard in charge of breaks on five carriages in the train, which consisted of an engine and tender and 18 carriages. If the means had existed of securing an interval of s ace between following trains the collision would not ave occurred..the Barnsley Branch-train, which was being shunted across the up-main-line, to take ayeast-van out of the carriagedock-siding. Eleven passengers riding in the ex ress-train complained of injury, and a woman and child w o had got into an empty carriage of the Barnsley train were also injured. The en 'ne-driver of the express-train found the distant-signal an two other signals at danger against him, but he was unable to bring 'his train to a stand before his engine came into collision with the shunting train, 812 yards within the distant-signal, and 72 yards from the stationplatform, at considerable speed.
