That elegant fiction the competitive equilibrium seems still to dominate the frontiers of theoretical microeconomics. We may think of it in a general way as a state of affairs wherein economic agents, responding "rationally" to annoWlced prices, make choices which are consistent and feasible. The prices may also be described as "taken": for one reason or another the agents who respond to them consider them as given. The existence of such a state, its optimality, its robustness against free bargaining among agents when there are many of them, its Wliqueness, its stability when price displacements evoke specified adjustments--all these issues have been studied, and continue to be studied in a variety of settings. Slowly the equilibrium investigated begins to incorporate public goods, externalities of certain kinds, differences in agents' information, and infinitely many time periods. The appeal of such results need not be belabored: the equilibrium studied may sustain an optimal resource allocation, and when it does it sus tains it in a manner that appears to be informationally efficient and to accord well with individual incentives. Therefore it is important to extend the circumstances under which an equilibrium exists, under which it sustains opti mality, and under which it survives displacements as well as free bargaining among agents.
Book Synopsis Rivalrous Consonance: A Theory of General Oligopolistic Equilibrium by : R.E. Kuenne
Download or read book Rivalrous Consonance: A Theory of General Oligopolistic Equilibrium written by R.E. Kuenne and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is an attempt to construct frameworks for the analysis of oligopoly which combine both the rivalrous and cooperative elements in the market structure of mature oligopolistic industries. It provides an alternative approach to those of game theory and conjectural variation, and does so in a fashion that permits: - the development of a general equilibrium framework that incorporates oligolopy - operational analysis of pricing policies in oligolopy - the tailoring of the analytical framework to the specifics of an industry within the context of multiobjective decision making. The book stresses the need for economic theory to move away from the search for universal theorems concerning oligopolistic behaviour, and to develop a body of specific industry analyses using ``simulative theorizing''.

Book Synopsis Equilibrium, Markets and Dynamics by : Cars H. Hommes
Download or read book Equilibrium, Markets and Dynamics written by Cars H. Hommes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-05-14 with total page 836 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains essays in honour of Claus Weddepohl who, after 22 years, is retiring as professor of mathematical economics at the Department of Quantitative Economics of the University of Amsterdam. Claus Weddepohl may be viewed as th~ first Dutch mathematical economist in the general equi librium tradition of Arrow, Debreu and Hahn. The essays in this book are centered around the themes Equilibrium, Markets and Dynamics, that have been at the heart of Weddepohl's work on mathematical economics for more than three decades. The essays have been classified according to these three themes. Admittedly such a classification always is somewhat arbitrary, and most essays would in fact fit into two or even all three themes. The essays have been written by international as well as Dutch friends and colleagues including Weddepohl's former Ph. D. students. The book starts with a review of Claus Weddepohl's work by Roald Ramer, who has been working with him in Amsterdam for all those years. The review describes how Weddepohl became fascinated by general equilibrium theory in the early stages of his career, how he has been working on the theory of markets throughout his career, and how he turned to applications of nonlinear dynamics to price adjustment processes in a later stage of his career. The first part of the book, Equilibrium, collects essays with general equilib rium theory as the main theme.
