To record the failings of his associates and friends has cost him many a struggle. On these disagreeable occasions, he has laboured to preserve the fidelity of the narrative, and at the same time to do as little violence as possible to personal feeling. One great advantage of the work would have been entirely lost, had these unhappy circumstances been consigned to obllviod. It is hoped, that the perusal of the, deplorable apostacy of some who made high professions, and the contentions and imperfec tions of other sincere but weak Christians, together with the awful mischief which the cause of the blessed Redeemer has sus tained by these means, will cause him that thinketh he standeth to take heed lest he fall: and excite every reader, but especially every minister, to be more earnest and constant in praying for grace to preserve him from giving any occasion to the enemies of the truth to blaspheme, and doubly vigilant in shunning every appearance of evil. The work is now sent abroad with a cheerful hope, that it may, through the blessing of Him, in whose hands are the hearts of the children of men, give the religious world more just ideas of the design, doctrines and character of the New Con nection of General Baptists than have hitherto been entertained, and thus procure for it, that esteem and countenance among other denominations, which it may appear to deserve; and that it may call the attention of those who compose that Connection to the true nature and principles of their union, and amniate them to pursue, with greater zeal, affection and ability, its important objects. Should these hopes be realized, the labour of the writer and the support of his friends will be abundantly rewan ded, in' the increasing prosperity, respectability and purity of that cause. During the nineteenth century they issued their Minutes annually in print, and those whose interest has been awakened will have little difficulty in following up the story. These volumes bring out clearly two points, as to government and as to doctrine. The General Baptists inherited from the continental Anabaptists the system of government which the Calvinists also adopted, and which has become so well known: as Presbyterian; a system of graded courts all controlled by the General Assembly. A futile attempt was made by the Long Parliament to force this on the Established Church, in the very years when the English General Baptists framed their organi zation. By 1660 it broke down finally in the Establishment, by 1680 many General Baptists doubted its wisdom, more challenged it in 1697, and despite brave assertions that Independence was dangerous, a partial surrender was made in 1711. In practice the control has long been abandoned, but the old affinities show themselves in that the General Baptists even today are on friendly terms with the survivors of the Paedobaptist Presbyterians of 1662. The Society of Friends, which at its origin was so closely related to the General Baptists, and retained longer those peculiarities of attire, marriage, worship, and doctrine which were common to both, does yet maintain a similar system of organization. And the records of its Quarterly and Yearly meetings, dating from the same early period, deserve equally to be put before the world. In the matter of doctrine, the General Baptists enshrine in their title the declaration that the grace of God' is available generally, for all men, and not for some only. When they first said this, they were as voices in a wilderness, for in a Calvinistic atmosphere the Articles of Religion had been revised for England, and the Five Points were sharpened at Dort just as John Smith challenged their peculiarities. The Midland Confession of must be read with the recollection of the Westminster Confession of 1646. Its companion Shorter Catechism is better known, and shows what the great Puritan party then held. Not only did mankind lack original righteousness, and suffer from corruption of the whole nature, but it was involved in the guilt of Adam's first sin, it was under God's wrath and curse, liable to all miseries in this life, to death itself, and to all the pains of hell for ever. The remedy for this was only of limited application, according to the Puritan theology, which announced that God out of His mere good pleasure, from all eternity, elected some to everlasting life. Against this ambiguity the General Baptists quoted scripture that God wished to redeem (not some, but) all men. And this was their cardinal doctrine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Original Free Will Baptists Original Free Will Baptists are the spiritual descendants of the General Baptists who settled in North Carolina during the colonial period. These General Baptists were the earliest Baptists to settle in the colony and were among the earliest organized religious groups in the colony, preceded only by the Quakers and the Anglicans. The story of these early Baptists has often been overshadowed by the accounts of other and later religious move ments which swept through the settlements of North Carolina and the rest of the region which became known as the South. Once this denomination had adopted the name Free Will Baptist and had begun to develop its own identity, they then began to preserve some account of their annual conferences, without which it would be impossible for one to know very much about them, apart from the oral traditions passed on from generation to generation. In the late nineteenth century there appeared two accounts of their history in North Carolina. The first was a summary account of their origin in this state, written by Rufus K. Heam about 1880, and the second consisted of a revised and enlarged version of Heam's account of their beginnings and a more detailed history of their pilgrimage through the nineteenth century, using abstracts of the minutes of the conferences during this period and written by Thad F. Harrison and J. M. Barfield. The latter was published in 1897 and served to inform a later generation of Free Will Baptists concerning their heritage. During the twentieth century more adequate records of this denomination havebeen kept and more attention has been given to preserving such materials, especially during the last few decades. In addition, research has turned up more information on the early period, including the colonial and the English General Baptist background of the denomination. As a result it is possible to give a more comprehensive and more accurate account of the denomina tion's history. For many years the author has had a deep interest in the history of Original Free Will Baptists. That interest, which beganof time the idea that he should undertake to write a history of the denomination began to take root and finally came to fruition following his retirement from the, college.
