Download or read book Ports and Inland Waterways written by R. E. Baxter and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ports and Inland Waterways is a review of sources of statistics on ports and inland waterways in the United Kingdom and covers subjects such as foreign traffic by commodity; coastwise traffic by commodity; special traffic; scheme and non-scheme port traffic; container and roll-on traffic; contents of containers; driver accompanied and unaccompanied road goods vehicles; and restow movements. Transhipment and transit movements are also included, along with fishery traffic, passenger traffic, and shipping movements. This volume is comprised of 12 chapters and begins with an overview of ports and shipping places in the United Kingdom, with emphasis on standardization, collection, and collation of port statistics on a national basis and the creation of the National Ports Council under the Harbours Act of 1964. A brief summary of industry activity concerned and its organization is given in order to present a clear background understanding of how data are collected; what is being measured; the stage at which measurements are made; what the reporting units are; the channels through which returns are routed; and where they are processed. Statistics of customs ports and other areas of the industry are then provided, including those of manpower and finance. Proposed developments for the industry are discussed in the last chapter. This book will be of interest to transportation officials, statisticians, economists, and social science researchers.
Book Synopsis Southern and West Country Airfields of the D-Day Invasion Air Force by : Peter Jacobs
Download or read book Southern and West Country Airfields of the D-Day Invasion Air Force written by Peter Jacobs and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As part of the Aviation Heritage Trail series, the airfields and interest in this book are concentrated in a particular area in this case West Sussex, Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire and Cornwall. The South and South-west of England emerged from six years of war with a rich diversity of RAF bomber and fighter airfields used by the 2nd Tactical Air Force, both before and after the D-Day landings. Much of this proud legacy is now threatening to disappear. However, the tourist can combine visits to an abundance of disused and active airfields, country houses and museums with countless attractions, imaginative locations, broad land, and coastal hideaways that have no equal. The airfields and other places of interest include Hartford Bridge, Lasham, Westhamptonett, Merston, Odiham, Holmsley South, Funtington, Hurn, Ford, Tangmere, Ibsley, Perranporth, Thruxton, Thorney Island, Appledram, Selesy, Needs Oar Point, Zeals, Lee-on-Solent and Bognor Regis. This book looks at the history and personalities associated with each base, what remains today and explores the favorite local wartime haunts where aircrew and ground crew would have sought well-deserved entertainment and relaxation. Other museums and places that are relevant will also be described and general directions on how to get them included."

Book Synopsis The use of airspace by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Transport Committee
Download or read book The use of airspace written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Transport Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009-07-10 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government's Future of Air Transport strategy aims to significantly increase UK airport capacity over the next two decades to accommodate the predicted growth in demand for air travel. New runways at Heathrow and Stansted airports are two of the key airport development proposals. If all the White Paper-supported airport development proposals came to fruition, current Government forecasts predict that the number of passengers passing through UK airports will increase from 241 million passengers a year in 2007 to 455 million passengers a year in 2030. This UK growth matches air traffic predictions for the whole continent. Eurocontrol, the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation, predicts that European air traffic will double by 2020. If rising demand for air travel is to be met effectively through additional airport capacity, a corresponding increase in airspace capacity must be realised. However, a country's airspace, the portion of atmosphere above its territory and territorial waters, controlled by that country is a finite resource. UK airspace, particularly in the South East of England, is already some of the busiest and most complex to manage in the world. This will almost certainly require improvements in the efficiency of the UK air traffic management system. The Committee's inquiry aims to look at how to meet these challenges. Its findings are aimed at those organisations responsible for airspace-related decisions in the UK: the CAA, NATS, and the Department for Transport. Passenger numbers and freight demand globally have declined in 2008 and in the first months of 2009. In its conclusions and recommendations the Committee covered the management of airspace, strategy, change and co-ordination in airspace management, environmental impacts of airspace changes and European developments.
Book Synopsis The ATL-98 Carvair by : William Patrick Dean
Download or read book The ATL-98 Carvair written by William Patrick Dean and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ATL-98 Carvair is a truly unusual aircraft. Converted from 19 C-54 World War II transport planes and two DC-4 airliners into a small fleet of air ferries by Aviation Traders of Southend, England, the Carvair allowed commercial air passengers to accompany their automobiles onboard the aircraft. The planes were dispersed throughout the world, operating for 75 airlines and transporting cars, royalty, rock groups, refugees, whales, rockets, military vehicles, gold, and even nuclear material. After more than 45 years, two Carvairs were in 2008 still in service. This comprehensive history of the ATL-98 Carvair, begins with corporate histories and profiles of key players, including William Patterson, Donald Douglas, and Freddie Laker. Four chapters illustrate the evolution of the car-ferry as a viable aircraft, the history of Aviation Traders, engineering details incorporated into the Carvair's production, and major Carvair operators. Chapters on each of the fleet's 21 planes provide individual histories and anecdotes. Seven appendices provide several kinds of data and the book is fully indexed.
