Book Synopsis Gene Families: Structure, Function, Genetics And Evolution - Proceedings Of The Viii International Congress On Isozymes by : Roger S Holmes
Download or read book Gene Families: Structure, Function, Genetics And Evolution - Proceedings Of The Viii International Congress On Isozymes written by Roger S Holmes and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996-05-04 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genes exist predominantly as families with related structures and functions, particularly within eucaryotic organisms. The isozyme concept was first introduced by Markert and MØller in 1959, and has formed the basis of large numbers of scientific investigations and conferences on gene families since that time. This volume is based on presentations made by invited Plenary and Symposia speakers at the Eighth International Congress on Isozymes on the topic of Gene Families: Structure, Function, Genetics and Evolution. The major themes for the Congress were in the following areas: molecular evolution; population genetics; enzymology; Australian fauna; biomedical aspects; molecular genetics; cellular compartmentation; gene regulation; and developmental genetics.

Book Synopsis Isozymes: Organization And Roles In Evolution, Genetics And Physiology, Proceedings Of The Seventh International Congress On Isozymes by : C L Markert
Download or read book Isozymes: Organization And Roles In Evolution, Genetics And Physiology, Proceedings Of The Seventh International Congress On Isozymes written by C L Markert and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994-07-26 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organisms frequently synthesize enzymes in multiple molecular forms to catalyze the same basic biochemical reactions. Each of these enzymes exhibit somewhat different kinetic properties and perhaps, are also located in a specific part of the metabolic structure of the cell. This isozymic multiplicity only emphasizes the biochemical versatility and refinement of the genetic-enzyme structure of organisms.Since the isozyme concept was formulated some thirty-five years ago, and especially after the advent of transgenic technology, the deep interest in the area has led to thousands of research investigations and many international conferences on the subject. This volume is a collection of selected oral presentations from one such conference, which is by now well-known.Topics includes: isozymes in population and evolution genetics, isozyme markers in gene mapping, isozymes in plant genetics, role of isozymes for normal physiology, the use of isozymes in human population biology, molecular organization and developmental regulation of isozymes and other related topics.

Book Synopsis Isozymes by : Clement Lawrence Markert
Download or read book Isozymes written by Clement Lawrence Markert and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 1032 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of isozymes has proven vital to understanding the genetic-enzyme structure of organisms. This volume presents an interdisciplinary review of the latest developments in this field of research. Focusing primarily on genetic and biochemical data, it covers both basic and applied aspects of isozymic biology and describes a wide range of approaches, from molecular to systemic, in the analysis of the origin, structure and function of isozymes, as well as their use and synthesis via new transgenic technology.

Book Synopsis Evolutionary Genetics of Fishes by : Bruce Turner
Download or read book Evolutionary Genetics of Fishes written by Bruce Turner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is my hope that this collection of reviews can be profitably read by all who are interested in evolutionary biology. However, I would like to specifically target it for two disparate groups of biologists seldom men tioned in the same sentence, classical ichthyologists and molecular biologists. Since classical times, and perhaps even before, ichthyologists have stood in awe at the tremendous diversity of fishes. The bulk of effort in the field has always been directed toward understanding this diversity, i. e. , extracting from it a coherent picture of evolutionary processes and lineages. This effort has, in turn, always been overwhelmingly based upon morphological comparisons. The practical advantages of such compari sons, especially the ease with which morphological data can be had from preserved museum specimens, are manifold. But considered objectively (outside its context of "tradition"), morphological analysis alone is a poor tool for probing evolutionary processes or elucidating relationships. The concepts of "relationship" and of "evolution" are inherently genetic ones, and the genetic bases of morphological traits are seldom known in detail and frequently unknown entirely. Earlier in this century, several workers, notably Gordon, Kosswig, Schmidt, and, in his salad years, Carl Hubbs, pioneered the application of genetic techniques and modes of reasoning to ichthyology. While certain that most contemporary ichth yologists are familiar with this body of work, I am almost equally certain that few of them regard it as pertinent to their own efforts.
Book Synopsis Human Population Genetics by : P.P. Majumder
Download or read book Human Population Genetics written by P.P. Majumder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. B. S. Haldane, R. A. Fisher and Sewall Wright simultaneously, and largely independently, laid the foundations of population genetics and the mathematical theory of evolution. Hal dane was born on November 5, 1892. Although he primarily worked at the University College London (UCL), in 1957 he resigned from the UCL and joined the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta (India) as a Research Professor. In celebration of his birth centenary, the Indian Statistical Institute organized an International Conference on Human Genetics from 15 to 19 December, 1992. The prime motive in holding this Conference was to bring together a group of scientists - geneticists, anthropologists, clinicians and statisticians - to evaluate the impact of Haldane's contributions to various areas of human genetics, and also to review recent developments in the subject. Session and lecture themes were so chosen that they covered areas theoretical and applied, classical and emerging. Speakers were then identified and invited to deliver lectures on these themes. Manuscripts of all invited presentations and a selected number of contributed presentations were considered for inclusion in this Proceed ings Volume. Each manuscript was reviewed by at least one Conference participant, which resulted in revision of several manuscripts and rejection of some. This volume is a collection of the manuscripts which have been 'accepted' after the review-process. The Conference began with the "J. B. S. Haldane Centenary Lecture" delivered by C. R. Rao.
