Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Females consistently score lower than males on standardized tests of mathematics - yet no such differences exist in the classroom. These differences are not trivial, nor are they insignificant. Test scores help determine entrance to college and graduate school and therefore, by extension, a person's job and future success. If females receive lower test scores then they also receive fewer opportunities. Why does this discrepancy exist? This book presents a series of papers that address these issues by integrating the latest research findings and theories. Authors such as Diane Halpern, Jacquelynne Eccles, Beth Casey, Ronald Nuttal, James Byrnes, and Frank Pajares tackle these questions from a variety of perspectives. Many different branches of psychology are represented, including cognitive, social, personality/self-oriented, and psychobiological. The editors then present an integrative chapter that discusses the ideas presented and other areas that the field should explore.

Book excerpt: analyzed using several regression models. The findings indicated that there are significant gender differences in the strengths of the sources of math self-efficacy. For community college online math students, physiological/emotional states was the most influential source of math self-efficacy, and it was even more influential for women than for men. Social persuasion was also more influential for women than for men. Additionally, the findings indicated that math self-efficacy predicts interest in a STEM career for women in community college online math classes but not for men. Implications of these findings for math education include the need for interventions to address math anxiety in community college online students and to provide ample positive feedback and encouragement. Fostering women's math self-efficacy may also help them develop interest in math-related careers and, in turn, help resolve the underrepresentation of women in STEM fields.

Book excerpt: The development of self-efficacy, the belief you have in your ability to be successful at a task or subject, has a huge effect on a student of any gender in any subject. It is important to understand how and why poor self-efficacy is blamed for the genesis of young girls’ lack of interest, involvement, and retention in mathematics and science studies and later, mathematics and science careers. Also noteworthy is how self-efficacy is greatly affected by the challenges of stereotype threat – a selfconfirming belief that may endorse negative stereotypes. The sidling up of feelings of poor self-efficacy in girls starting prior to adolescence (specifically between third and fifth grade), and the negative consequences from this insidious phenomena, are examined in this paper, as well what positive and effective measures, including addressing motivation, are being taken to combat stereotype threat and reverse a socialization curse. Additionally, a staff professional development reveals how even the most earnest of educators can bring their gender biases and fixed mindsets into a classroom and obstruct the path for girls in mathematics and science. Finally, in a culminating event titled “Women in Math and Science for Youth” or “WIMSY”, vii supporting the growth mindset-based lifelong learner and their eager students, women from the community in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) studies and careers face interactive audiences of children, grades kindergarten to fifth grade, sharing information, advice, and providing living female role models in STEM occupations.

Book excerpt: Previous research has shown that mathematical self-efficacy is positively correlated with mathematical performance level. However, in elementary classroom settings, teachers noticed that students with high mathematical self-efficacy had low mathematical performance level. On the other end of the spectrum, there are students who have low mathematical self-efficacy yet excel in mathematics. Discovering what factors are common among these two types of students can aid teachers in helping these students improve their self-efficacy and mathematics performance. This explanatory mixed-methods design was conducted in a K-6 elementary school with the research participants consisting of fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grade students. The first of two research phases included assessing students0́9 mathematical performance level and mathematical self-efficacy. Utilizing the criteria of high or low performance in correlation to high or low self-efficacy, the students were placed into one of four categories; high performance/high self-efficacy (High P/High SE), low performance/low self-efficacy (Low P/Low SE), high performance/low self-efficacy (High P/Low SE), and low performance/high self-efficacy (Low P/High SE). Phase II of the research included interviewing the top two students from the High P/High SE group and the bottom two from the Low P/Low SE group as well as all of the students in the High P/Low SE and the Low P/High SE groups. After the interviews were analyzed, the researcher identified the factors that are common to the High P/Low SE and Low P/High SE groups that were not found in the High P/High SE or Low P/Low SE groups. Some examples of these factors for students with High P/Low SE included feelings of jealousy, not feeling smart even when the math is easy, and not feeling encouraged by teachers and parents. Examples of these factors for students with Low P/High SE included preferring completing assignments in a group and giving up when the mathematics gets difficult. The potential implications of this research may be used in elementary classrooms to help teachers identify outlier students as well as help students better align their self-efficacy with their achievement level. The intended audience of this research was elementary mathematics teachers.
