Book excerpt: The book analyses patterns of women’s political participation and evaluates disparity between levels of women’s participation in politics and representation in governance in Nigeria. It also examines the causes of women’s underrepresentation in governance and decision-making as well as their implications for the country’s socioeconomic development and describes strategies for increased women’s representation in governance and decision-making in Nigeria. This study relies on political-culture and liberal-feminist theory and adopts a mixed-method research design involving quantitative and qualitative methods. It uses multistage sampling in selecting Nigeria’s South-East, North-West and South-West geopolitical-zones and 1206 women of electoral age for the study survey conducted using structured questionnaire and in-depth interview.

Book excerpt: The political marginalization of women in the Habe States of northern Nigeria began with the introduction of Islam in the 11th century and was virtually completed by the Fulani conquest of the Habe States in the 19th century (Calloway 1987:11-18). Formal British rule, imposed early in the 20th century, reinforced this trend in southern Nigeria by excluding women from many of their diverse and substantial political roles. Post-independence Nigerian governments have attempted to reverse this situation by including a limited number of women in government. But this tokenism has neither met the need for sexual equality of representation in government nor ensured stability through a diversified distribution of power. Progressive but limited action is being taken, as more serious thought is given to the problem of eliminating the gender biases of the Nigerian political system.

Local, multinational and multilateral organizations in many developed and developing nations have instituted policies and taken actions that address cases of injustice against women. But gender inequity appears to be an issue beyond what constitutional provisions and corporate strategies can address. How, for instance, does a statutory provision guarantee the equal visibility of men and women in a news report, especially in a neoliberal democracy where the general patriarchal character of the media aligns with the logic of commercialism which prioritizes profit and targets mainly those who have the means of purchase? The invisibility of women in the media is a global issue, and a great concern in Africa. Women’s Political Visibility and Media Access: The Case of Nigeria, however, is about a country of over 160 million people; a population roughly divided equally between male and female. The book, through empirical analyses and qualitative discourses, agglomerates several perspectives regarding the visibility of women in the turbulent Nigerian political terrain and the response of the media in that direction, in a concerted effort to resolve the burning issues of gender equality in Nigeria. The book assesses the impact of aggressive tactics from women in the political arena, “conscious reporting” of women by journalists, and the increased use of ICTs by women as practical ways of bridging this wide gap.

Book excerpt: Sustainable development is now intricately linked not just to economic growth, but more importantly, to the quality of life of people in terms of their social status, political participation, cultural freedom, environmental justice and inclusive development. For previously colonized nations like Nigeria, these linkages are believed to have been influenced by the legacies of colonial rule, positively or otherwise. Through the Gender Lens: A Century of Social and Political Development in Nigeria looks at how colonialism has enabled or hindered the roles of the state in promoting inclusive development in general, and gender equality, in particular, in the process of nation building. In this edited volume, scholars analyze a host of policies, strategies and programs, as well as empirical evidence, to expose how types of governance — from direct colonial rule in the country from 1914, through her independence in 1960, a Republic in 1963, and to different post-independence governance periods — have influenced gender relations, and the impacts of these on Nigerian women. Diverse sectoral perspectives from education, health, culture, environment, and especially politics, are presented to explain the level of attainment (or otherwise) of gender equality and the implications for Nigeria’s road to sustainable development. The emphasis on the role of the state in development particularly indicts the social and political domains of governance. Hence, the main focus of inquiry in the volume. In its twelve chapters, the authors analyze available data and other information to draw relevant conclusions, identify lessons of experience, including from some cross-country comparisons, and make concrete recommendations for more gender-inclusive systems of governance in the next century of Nigeria’s nationhood.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, , language: English, abstract: Women consist part of the world population and the participation of women in political parties is very gamine especially in a democratic country. However, there is an assumption on men’s domination of political parties and the women are solely in the parties as cheerleaders. Studies exist on women participation in politics in Ekiti State, extant literature have not addressed the functions of women in political parties in Ekiti State. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine the functions of women in political parties in Ekiti State. It also aimed at investigating women access to empowerment within the political parties in Ekiti State. The study adopted a qualitative method research design in which an in-depth interview was combined with documentary evidence. Primary data were sourced using interview and focus group while secondary data was sourced from documents such as the Nigeria constitution, Independent national commission and relevant documents from the political party’s websites. Through purposive and snowball sampling techniques, four political parties were selected and using a semi-structured interview, a total number of 13 people within the four political parties were interviewed and 2 Focus Group within the four political parties. The study also implored relevant literatures and theory; the study implored liberal feminism. Findings showed that women in political parties in Ekiti States perform roles such as spiritual, mobilizing and executive roles. Women functions in political parties are both within and outside the parties. Furthermore, the status of women in political parties in Ado Ekiti has not reflected most of the global laws and declaration on women. The result of the study showed that decision making roles are occupied by mostly men and has experienced a slight increase in the present administration. It also revealed that women have access to financial, economic and material resources and these resources are given based on individual choices. Lastly, women have access to human capacity, skill and financial empowerment yet it varies in the four political parties.

The authors argue that women are unsung heroes, driving the growth of nations. Nevertheless, their stories are seldom told, they are often stereotyped and marginalized within society. This form of discrimination serves to take away the voices of women in all social stratas, especially in the developing nations of Africa. It is little wonder that there is gender inequality, gender bias, and gender injustice in society. This book highlights literature which may be used to actualize gender equality and social justice for women. By creating a discussion around gender, society will begin to understand the value and importance of women in engineering development. Women are vital to social change.

This book looks at the major themes that drive the women's empowerment programs in Nigeria. Feminists in Nigeria are shaped by the institutions, values, ideologies, and since the 1970s, the UN and its agencies have added an international dimension. The chapters, while taking us through a theoretical overview of Nigerian women's empowerment, also shows how institutions, values, religion, and culture can challenge feminist political philosophy-- a philosophy that tends to universalize women's problems and their solutions.

Book excerpt: The Metaketa Initiative is a study across 5 countries to improve women's empowerment beyond the household-including in governance at different levels. Specifically, it proposes to test whether a training intervention designed to strengthen women's sense of collective efficacy and leadership skills will improve their voice and agency in local political engagement. One of these countries is Nigeria, where the following women's training curriculum will be implemented in 3 southwestern states (Ogun, Osun, and Oyo}. ActionAid Nigeria (AAN} is partnering with Researchers from the International Food Policy Research Institute, UC Berkeley, and UC San Diego to develop and test a women's training curriculum that will help women to overcome some of the barriers to increasing their participation. Specifically, this women's training curriculum will focus on at least five different skills areas that include: (1} Civic education; (2) Making common grievances over gender inequality salient; (3) Increasing a sense of women1 s group identity; (4) Understanding how men can support women; and (5) Increasing perceived efficacy. For some women, their training will be complemented by their partners receiving a men1 s training curriculum. The durations of all of these program elements are listed below. In all cases, the listed duration of the training session is time spent in actual activities, and is exclusive of time required to gather all participants, welcome them, provide breaks, and distribute sign-in sheets, etc. One hour will be allocated in all sessions for such administrative matters.
