Download or read book The Artful Mind written by Mark Turner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-10-26 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All normal human beings alive in the last fifty thousand years appear to have possessed, in Mark Turner's phrase, "irrepressibly artful minds." Cognitively modern minds produced a staggering list of behavioral singularities--science, religion, mathematics, language, advanced tool use, decorative dress, dance, culture, art--that seems to indicate a mysterious and unexplained discontinuity between us and all other living things. This brute fact gives rise to some tantalizing questions: How did the artful mind emerge? What are the basic mental operations that make art possible for us now, and how do they operate? These are the questions that occupy the distinguished contributors to this volume, which emerged from a year-long Getty-funded research project hosted by the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford. These scholars bring to bear a range of disciplinary and cross-disciplinary perspectives on the relationship between art (broadly conceived), the mind, and the brain. Together they hope to provide directions for a new field of research that can play a significant role in answering the great riddle of human singularity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's year 11 after the Har-Megedon. Humanity survived 4 major world wars. During these years we have resurfaced as a species and we have worked hard in the healing and regeneration of our planet. We live in peace, union, harmony and development, but in other systems we still experience hostility. Ari, 16 year old, is a survivor of the bygone era. She study at the great academy TAE, where extrasensory skills learned will be of great help in an adventure that is about to take. Premonitory dreams about her death push her to enter the core of the main rebellion still existing in the Hermarmene (star systems that make up the Ananke sphere, structured by the 12 zodiacal constellations and 36 master star systems). Ari is accompanied by Guang, whose mother was kidnapped by the insurrection of Sirius B, and reason that leads them to get together to find answers. Their journey takes them to the legendary god Horus, with Osiris and Tot, who will guide them to get 4 gems that are hidden in Venus, Mars, Ganymede and Titan, and with which they can mentally control the 'Tilmun', the ship with which the atlantean god Tot erected the Great Pyramid of Gize. The kobali forces, led by Thirium Shen, wish to appropriate the Tilmun to reunite the great tyrants of Draco and Orion and destroy the Earth and face again the Confederacy. The adventure of Ari and her companions will go hand in hand with travel in time and alternative histories developed mainly in the past of the Earth to protect the Tilmun on the part of the Confederation, and steal it, on the part of the Betasirian rebellion. Gods, demi-gods, angels, demons, Ka-Bas (spirits) and magical creatures will play a part in this fascinating saga both in Towsang (our solar system) and throughout Jaleb (the Milky Way) and in AOR (super central galaxy of the local groups of the Mem universe).

Download or read book Light in Germany written by T.J. Reed and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-03-02 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Germany’s political and cultural past from ancient times through World War II has dimmed the legacy of its Enlightenment, which these days is far outshone by those of France and Scotland. In this book, T. J. Reed clears the dust away from eighteenth-century Germany, bringing the likes of Kant, Goethe, Friedrich Schiller, and Gotthold Lessing into a coherent and focused beam that shines within European intellectual history and reasserts the important role of Germany’s Enlightenment. Reed looks closely at the arguments, achievements, conflicts, and controversies of these major thinkers and how their development of a lucid and active liberal thinking matured in the late eighteenth century into an imaginative branching that ran through philosophy, theology, literature, historiography, science, and politics. He traces the various pathways of their thought and how one engendered another, from the principle of thinking for oneself to the development of a critical epistemology; from literature’s assessment of the past to the formulation of a poetic ideal of human development. Ultimately, Reed shows how the ideas of the German Enlightenment have proven their value in modern secular democracies and are still of great relevance—despite their frequent dismissal—to us in the twenty-first century.
