Book Synopsis Descriptions of Maryland (Classic Reprint) by : Bernard C. Steiner
Download or read book Descriptions of Maryland (Classic Reprint) written by Bernard C. Steiner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptions of Maryland From the time when Lucas Vasquez de Ayllon sailed to America and entered the Chesapeake Bay, many travellers have entered the territory now embraced in the State of Maryland and have written accounts of what they found there. Other descriptions of the State or of parts of it have been written to serve as guide - books to strangers. Still other descriptions, more or less imaginary in character, are found in the pages of works of fiction. It seemed a task worthy of performance to gather together the references to the State found in works in the classes above named and to prepare a chronological bibliography of the descriptions of Maryland. No claim for completeness is made for the list of books; but, at the least, it forms a good working basis for the student. To several classes of investigators the list should prove of use: the man interested in the State's history, the chronicler of local conditions, the student of the manners and customs of the people at any given epoch, and the biographer who may find references to the man whose life he is studying. Most of the books included in the list are contained in the valuable collections of the Enoch Pratt Free Library, and the preparation of the monograph has been possible only because of the cordial co-operation and painstaking care of Miss Anna M. Doerksen, Superintendent of Circulation in that institution. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of the Early History of Maryland In 1640, owing probably, to the obstructed intercourse with the, natives and the necessity of providing stores for the mili tary, the exportation of corn was prohibited; and three viewers or inspectors of tobacco were to be appointed by the com mander in every hundred, sometimes cc-extensive with a county. When a hogshead should be found to contain bad tobacco for the greater part, it was to be burned, and when not sealed for good, the exportation was prohibited under treble damages: It was, however not uncommon, even at a later period, to ship that article in bulk as we now do staves or other lumber. Download or read book Governors of Maryland written by Heinrich Ewald Buchholz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Governors of Maryland: From the Revolution to the Year 1908 One distinction, at least, must be given this work among the historical volumes dealing with Maryland subjects; its author purposely refrains from naming in his preface those who aided him in his work; he also willfully neglects to supply a list of his authorities. Ungrateful, indeed, would be the author were he here to print the names of those kindly persons who have made easy his search for data, since by so doing he would invite other writers to impose upon their kindness. As to sources - too often the historical writer is tempted to copy a page or two or three of some bibliography and ofier it as his authorities. But the writer of this work will not hold any other author or any book responsible for his statements or misstatements, for he has drawn his data not only from books, but newspapers, legislative journals, letters, private diaries, his own imagina tion and, in a few isolated cases, the gossip of old women.
