Men and women looking for escape from the excess and sham culture in which they live—junk food, souvenirs, and hype (whether for religion or sex)—are led by the power of their own imaginations to places of danger and self-reckoning. In these gritty, imaginative stories set in the mountains and small towns of the South—often in motels, theme parks, or resorts—men and women find themselves at the mercy of an inspiration gone wrong: a man on a tryst is seduced by a ghost; a woman conducts a test to discover who is her true best friend—her husband or her dog; a beleaguered young writing professor goes one step too far while chaperoning the famous writer he finds darkly alluring. In the title story, an ex-high-school basketball player living an uneventful life in her small hometown as a cashier helps her boyfriend rob a lottery winner, and finds herself on an epic journey of fear, deceit, and betrayal.

Book excerpt: This is a riveting tale of love and greed set against the backdrop of the War on Terror. Intrigues and conspiracies with clandestine operations by unseen powers that take place in distant lands, combined with satire, makes this a sensational book for politically savvy readers. The travails of the protagonists focus attention on the war torn region of the Middle East where the plight of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire leaves an indelible impression of horror and recoil.

This book was released on 2017-01-04 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian believers are instructed to "study to show themselves to be approved before God." Dr. Charity's challenge to believers is to grasp the biblical truth and to enjoy the fictional storyline for a wonderfully entertaining adventure of intimacy with Yeshua-Jesus, the Magnificent-Son. After this feeding, believers will no longer tolerate milk but will yearn for more stories of meaty truth. And, if they are vegetarians, instead of meat, they will yearn for delicious cob salad of truth, every time. Yeshua-Jesus, the Magnificent-Son, is the only actual, genuine Superhero. And unlike all of the made up fictional superheroes, who can be very entertaining in their endless comic book and movie adventures, Magnificent-Son is the only one who can touch an individual believer's life intimately, changing it, while providing you a personal audience, even through struggles and roadblocks. We today, like Job in the Old Testament can discover that God the Magnificent-Son, who was the pre-incarnate Angel of the Lord, will always be with every believer, even at times when things may seem like they can't get any worse.

Addy is haunted by the tragic fire that killed her parents, leaving her to be raised by her grandmother. Years later, Addy’s grandmother has enrolled her in a summer wilderness program. There, Addy joins five other Black city kids—each with their own troubles—to spend a summer out west. Deep in the forest the kids learn new (and to them) strange skills: camping, hiking, rock climbing, and how to start and safely put out campfires. Most important, they learn to depend upon each other for companionship and survival. But then comes a devastating forest fire… Addy is face-to-face with her destiny and haunting past. Developing her courage and resiliency against the raging fire, it’s up to Addy to lead her friends to safety. Not all are saved. But remembering her origins and grandmother’s teachings, she’s able to use street smarts, wilderness skills, and her spiritual intuition to survive. Book Synopsis Securing Paradise by : Vernadette Vicuña Gonzalez
Download or read book Securing Paradise written by Vernadette Vicuña Gonzalez and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-11 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Securing Paradise, Vernadette Vicuña Gonzalez shows how tourism and militarism have functioned together in Hawai`i and the Philippines, jointly empowering the United States to assert its geostrategic and economic interests in the Pacific. She does so by interpreting fiction, closely examining colonial and military construction projects, and delving into present-day tourist practices, spaces, and narratives. For instance, in both Hawai`i and the Philippines, U.S. military modes of mobility, control, and surveillance enable scenic tourist byways. Past and present U.S. military posts, such as the Clark and Subic Bases and the Pearl Harbor complex, have been reincarnated as destinations for tourists interested in World War II. The history of the U.S. military is foundational to tourist itineraries and imaginations in such sites. At the same time, U.S. military dominance is reinforced by the logics and practices of mobility and consumption underlying modern tourism. Working in tandem, militarism and tourism produce gendered structures of feeling and formations of knowledge. These become routinized into everyday life in Hawai`i and the Philippines, inculcating U.S. imperialism in the Pacific.

Download or read book People and Land written by Jione Havea and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-11-06 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empires rise and expand by taking lands and resources and by enslaving the bodies and minds of people. Even in this modern era, the territories, geographies, and peoples of a number of lands continue to be divided, occupied, harvested, and marketed. The legacy of slavery and the scapegoating of people persists in many lands, and religious institutions have been co-opted to own land, to gather people, to define proper behavior, to mete out salvation, and to be silent. The contributors to People and Land, writing from under the shadows of various empires—from and in between Africa, Asia, the Americas, the Caribbean, and Oceania—refuse to be silent. They give voice to multiple causes: to assess and transform the usual business of theology and hermeneutics; to expose and challenge the logics and delusions of coloniality; to tally and demand restitution of stolen, commodified and capitalized lands; to account for the capitalizing (touristy) and forced movements of people; and to scripturalize the undeniable ecological crises and our responsibilities to the whole life system (watershed). This book is a protest against the claims of political and religious empires over land, people, earth, minds, and the future.
Book Synopsis Restoring Paradise by : Robert J. Cabin
Download or read book Restoring Paradise written by Robert J. Cabin and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three quarters of the U.S.’s bird and plant extinctions have occurred in Hawai‘i, and one third of the country’s threatened and endangered birds and plants reside within the state. Yet despite these alarming statistics, all is not lost: There are still 12,000 extant species unique to the archipelago and new species are discovered every year. In Restoring Paradise: Rethinking and Rebuilding Nature in Hawai‘i, Robert Cabin shows why current attempts to preserve Hawai‘i’s native fauna and flora require embracing the emerging paradigm of ecological restoration—the science and art of assisting the recovery of degraded species and ecosystems and creating more meaningful and sustainable relationships between people and nature. Cabin’s extensive experience as a research ecologist and applied practitioner enables him to provide a rare, behind-the-scenes look at successful and inspiring restoration programs. In Part 1 he recounts Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge’s efforts to restore thousands of acres of degraded pasture on the island of Hawai‘i back to the native rain forests that once dominated the area and sheltered native birds now on the brink of extinction. Along the way, he presents an overview of Hawaiian natural and cultural history, biogeography, and evolutionary biology. Following chapters look at restoration work underway by the U.S. Park Service to reestablish native species within the vast Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park; by a charismatic scientist and dedicated volunteers to restore the native forests of Auwahi on the southern slopes of Haleakalā; and by the Limahuli branch of Kauai’s National Tropical Botanical Garden to revive a thousand-year-old taro plantation. To investigate the compelling and often conflicting philosophies and strategies of those involved in restoration, Cabin opens Part 3 with interview excerpts from a cross-section of Hawai‘i’s environmental community. He concludes with a provocative and insightful discussion of the contentious, evolving relationship between humans and nature and the power and limitations of science within and beyond Hawai‘i.
