Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September of 1981, a world conference on alternative fuels enti tled "Methane - Fuel for the Future" was held at Delta I s River Inn in Vancouver, British Columbia. Approximately 500 registrants from over a dozen countries attended the two day meeting. There were 20 invited papers which form the basis of this volume. The conference itself was inspired by the "energy crisis". This crisis was not seen in terms of any real shortage of oil in the -near term, although an end to conventional oil could be seen on the horizon. Rather, it was perceived as an artificial crisis, precipitated by OPEC, but one which required urgent and effective solutions. Not everyone will agree that urgent action is required to meet the "energy crisis". Indeed, as this volume goes to press, the media are advising that a global glut of oil exists and that price reductions will inevitably ensue. The OPEC production rate has slipped from 31 million barrels a day shortly before the 1973 oil embargo, to a current rate of less than 20 million barrels a day. The non-Communist world now depends upon OPEC for less than half of its oil requirements versus 70 per cent only a decade ago.

Book Synopsis Methane Activation and Utilization in the Petrochemical and Biofuel Industries by : Hua Song
Download or read book Methane Activation and Utilization in the Petrochemical and Biofuel Industries written by Hua Song and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses effective and alternative uses for natural gas (NG) and highlights the utilization of NG in the field of methane activation and chemical production. It details the techniques used during the reforming process of petrochemical and bio-derived fuels and it presents cutting-edge research that describes the utilization of NG that enables it to be more cost-effective and eliminate the expensive greenhouse gas emitting process of hydrogen production. The book addresses three major topics: NG use in upstream heavy oil and bitumen upgrading, NG and its use in downstream oil refining through co-aromatization of various feeds in the petrochemical industry, and NG use in the upgrading of bio-derived fuels and discusses alternative uses of NG. In-depth chapters demonstrate uses for NG beyond heating homes, through catalysis and in-situ hydrogen donation, and its potential applications for the petrochemical and biofuel industries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Direct Methane to Methanol: Foundations and Prospects of the Process offers a state-of-the-art account of one of the most interesting and potentially commercial technologies for direct conversion of natural gas into valuable chemicals. The book thoroughly explains the complex and unusual chemistry of the process, as well as possible applications for direct methane to methanol (DMTM). It covers topics involving thermokinetics, pressure, direct oxidation of heavier alkanes, and more, and provides detailed appendices with experimental data and product yields. This book provides all those who work in the field of gas processing and gas chemistry with the theory and experimental data to develop and apply new processes based on direct oxidation of natural gas. All those who deal with oil and natural gas production and processing will learn about this promising technology for the conversion of gas into more valuable chemicals. Reviews more than 350 publications on high-pressure, low-temperature oxidation of methane and other gas phase hydrocarbons Contains rare material available for the first time in English Explains the reasons of previous failure and outlines the way forward for commercial development of the conversion technology Presents a deep theoretical knowledge of this complex conversion process

Book Synopsis Chapter 1 Analysis of C5 and Lighter Hydrocarbons by : NG. Johansen
Download or read book Chapter 1 Analysis of C5 and Lighter Hydrocarbons written by NG. Johansen and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE LIGHT HYDROCARBONS-methane (C1), ethane (C2), propane (C3), and the butanes (C4), either in the gas phase or liquefied, are primarily used for heating, motor fuels, and as feedstocks for chemical processing. The pentanes/pentenes (C5) are products of natural gas or petroleum fractionation or refinery operations (id est, reforming and cracking) that are removed for use as chemical feedstocks. The olefins-ethene (ethylene), propene (propylene), butenes (butene-1, isobutylene, cis- and trans-butene-2, and the butadienes), pentenes, and pentadienes are materials produced by various refining processes involving the use of the saturated hydrocarbons as feedstocks.
