Book excerpt: The growth in competitiveness in airline industry has called for more advanced tool to estimate the operating costs. Engine maintenance costs are an important decisionmaking element during airline fleet selection judgment. Long term observation in aerospace led to the development of engine maintenance costs calculators based on empirical correlation. But the possibilities of empirical model application for future engines without prior operational data are limited. A physics-based tool to estimate the life of the engine components and predict the shop visit rate requires the variations of thermodynamic parameters over the flight path. High fidelity engine models are simulated using an engine performance program. A test program designated for design, off-design and transient performance simulation for simple turbojet layout gas turbine engine has been programmed and tested. The knowledge gained from program coding was used to generate more robust transient performance code implemented to Turbomatch. Two transient methods have been tested: The rapid transient performance method and the thermodynamic matching method. The tests showed greater robustness and stability of the second method, which has been finally adopted for the program. For industrial engine configuration and for future novel engine cycles the heat-exchanger dynamic response model was implemented and tested. Created tool was demonstrated on short-haul study of engine flight path analysis. Together with the aircraft model, the tool produced variations of parameters needed for the lifing algorithm.

Book excerpt: The book is written for engineers and students who wish to address the preliminary design of gas turbine engines, as well as the associated performance calculations, in a practical manner. A basic knowledge of thermodynamics and turbomachinery is a prerequisite for understanding the concepts and ideas described. The book is also intended for teachers as a source of information for lecture materials and exercises for their students. It is extensively illustrated with examples and data from real engine cycles, all of which can be reproduced with GasTurb (TM). It discusses the practical application of thermodynamic, aerodynamic and mechanical principles. The authors describe the theoretical background of the simulation elements and the relevant correlations through which they are applied, however they refrain from detailed scientific derivations.

Book excerpt: This Lecture Series covers topics of aero-thermodynamic performance prediction methods for gas turbine engines with respect to steady and transient operation. This includes advanced cycle calculation methods, also taking into account variable cycle engine types. A very important objective is the consideration of installation effects, i.e. Reynolds number and inlet distortions, as well as advanced control concepts for increasing engine surge margins. In addition to these topics, individual papers include practical considerations in designing the engine cycle, dynamic simulation, inlet distortion effects in aircraft propulsion system integration, smart engines, performance and health monitoring models. This Lecture Series, sponsored by the Propulsion and Energetics Panel of AGARD, has been implemented by the Consultant and Exchange Programme. Book excerpt: Industrial Gas Turbines: Performance and Operability explains important aspects of gas turbine performance such as performance deterioration, service life and engine emissions. Traditionally, gas turbine performance has been taught from a design perspective with insufficient attention paid to the operational issues of a specific site. Operators are not always sufficiently familiar with engine performance issues to resolve operational problems and optimise performance.Industrial Gas Turbines: Performance and Operability discusses the key factors determining the performance of compressors, turbines, combustion and engine controls. An accompanying engine simulator CD illustrates gas turbine performance from the perspective of the operator, building on the concepts discussed in the text. The simulator is effectively a virtual engine and can be subjected to operating conditions that would be dangerous and damaging to an engine in real-life conditions. It also deals with issues of engine deterioration, emissions and turbine life. The combined use of text and simulators is designed to allow the reader to better understand and optimise gas turbine operation. - Discusses the key factors in determining the perfomance of compressors, turbines, combustion and engine controls - Explains important aspects of gas and turbine perfomance such as service life and engine emissions - Accompanied by CD illustrating gas turbine performance, building on the concepts discussed in the text

This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research study focuses on the idea of simulation of an Integrated FullElectric Propulsion System. The simulation required the development of a gasturbine performance model that could predict the dynamic behaviour of theengine in response to a fluctuation of electrical load. For this purposes it wasnecessary to evaluate the thermodynamic working process of the gas turbineand a computer code was created. A design point model written in FORTRAN77 had been transformed to predict the steady state and transientperformance of a two-shaft gas turbine and single shaft gas turbine. Themodels were based on the thermodynamic law of conservation of mass. Forthe model of the two-shaft gas turbine controls system equations had beenderived from off-design analysis and implemented as handles for operation. Both the models were then transformed to a direct link library for theSIMULINK? package. They were further implemented with an electricalnetwork model to form a high-fidelity prime mover-electrical networkpropulsiondrive interface with which a complete systems analysis was doneto understand the response of the three systems in parallel. In a second part heat exchanger modelling had to be performed so as tocreate a gas turbine model of an intercooled-recuperated engine. This wasdone for the steady state behaviour and sizing problem of heat exchangers. The models were run parallel to the steady state code as a validationexercise. Due to time and project restraints the complete incorporation of themodels with the gas turbine code was not performed and only a uni-directionalsystem of heat exchanger was created. Over all the period of researchparametric studies had been done for comparison of various aspects ofperformance. The high fidelity model of the prime mover-electrical network highlighted thereasons for studying the impact of the propulsion drive and electrical networkload dynamics on the operation of the prime movers and vice versa. The loss-of-propulsion-load scenario case study has demonstrated the capabilities ofthe integrated model, showing clear interactions between the individualsubsystems. The interface can now be used to analyse novel types of gasturbine engines in the future. The method adopted to simulate transientperformance of gas turbines was useful in understanding the impact of bleedair on current and novel cycles. Finally the task of heat exchanger simulationemphasized the need to create better and accurate models to understand theimpact of its behaviour on the gas turbine.

Book excerpt: This document provides recommendations for several aspects of air-breathing gas turbine engine performance modeling using object-oriented programming systems. Nomenclature, application program interface, and user interface are addressed with the emphasis on nomenclature. The Numerical Propulsion System Simulation (NPSS) modeling environment is frequently used in this document as an archetype. Many of the recommendations for standards are derived from NPSS standards. NPSS was chosen because it is an available product. The practices recommended herein may be applied to other object-oriented systems. While this document applies broadly to any gas turbine engine, the great majority of engine performance computer programs have historically been written for aircraft propulsion systems. Aircraft and propulsion terminology and examples appear throughout. Gas turbine engine manufacturers (suppliers) have long provided their customers with computer programs which simulate engine performance. Application manufacturers and others (customers) use these programs, often called models or simulations, in design studies, mission analysis, life cycle analysis, and performance prediction of their products. These models are used throughout the life of a product, from conceptual design through production, deployment, field use, maintenance, and overhaul. Communication between suppliers and customers is more productive and less error prone if all engine models adhere to common guidelines with respect to presentation of data and interface with other computer programs. No guidelines or recommended practices previously existed for Object-Oriented models.Revision A has been created to correct minor typographical errors as well as address integer switch values that have been added in Appendix A, also some revisions were made in the Program Status Indicaton section.

Book excerpt: The paper deals with some activities carried out for setting up and using numerical computer codes for simulating the behaviour of gas turbine engines during transient operations. Calculations for studying the influence on the performance of component characteristics decays have been performed. The flexibility of the codes have allowed for the evaluation of fuel flow laws suitable for obtaining assigned values of Turbine Inlet Temperature or engine thrust. The paper shows how it is possible to apply the codes for other similar calculations. Lastly, the so called secondary transient effects have been studied. The first results for taking into account the variation of component efficiencies due to heat transfer are presented.
