Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gas Chemists Handbook, 1916 The magnitude and delicacy of this work is fully realized and this is presented primarily as'a progress report. In time, the Institute would be well repaid for the expense incurred in the publication of such a handbook by the uniformity of practice that would result from the adoption of these methods and by the convenience to the gas Chemist of having recognized standard methods pertaining to the industry collected in one convenient publication. While this first issue of the Handbook was a very decided step in the right direction, it was recognized that much was still to be accomplished and the continuance of the work de volved upon the 1915 Committee on Chemical 'tests. This Committee was unable to do more than report satisfactory progress at the 1915 meeting of the Institute and the same Committee was re-appointed to continue the revision over 1916. Book excerpt: Written by an author with over 38 years of experience in the chemical and petrochemical process industry, this handbook will present an analysis of the process steps used to produce industrial hydrocarbons from various raw materials. It is the first book to offer a thorough analysis of external factors effecting production such as: cost, availability and environmental legislation. An A-Z list of raw materials and their properties are presented along with a commentary regarding their cost and availability. Specific processing operations described in the book include: distillation, thermal cracking and coking, catalytic methods, hydroprocesses, thermal and catalytic reforming, isomerization, alkylation processes, polymerization processes, solvent processes, water removal, fractionation and acid gas removal. Flow diagrams and descriptions of more than 250 leading-edge process technologies An analysis of chemical reactions and process steps that are required to produce chemicals from various raw materials Properties, availability and environmental impact of various raw materials used in hydrocarbon processing

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry of Gas Manufacture, Vol. 1: A Practical Handbook on the Production, Purification, and Testing of Illuminating and Fuel Gas, and on the Bye-Products of Gas Manufacture The extensive revision and enlargement of this handbook, which the advances in the Gas Industry made imperative as soon as the Second Edition was exhausted, practically precluded its continued publication as a single volume. The manufacture and use of Acetylene, to which a chapter had been devoted in that edition, could no longer be adequately or appropriately dealt with in such a manner, and a new handbook on "Acetylene" was, therefore, written by Mr. F. H. Leeds, in collaboration with the undersigned, and published in 1903. The revision of the rest of this work, as projected, entailed the re-writing of the major part of it, and in order neither to delay publication unduly nor to make too bulky a volume, it was decided to publish as a first volume the portion treating of the Materials and Processes of Gas Manufacture before the completion of the revision of the remainder of the book. The volume, published accordingly in 1904, has been revised throughout, and several pages of fresh matter have been added for the present new edition. A second volume, covering the "Testing and Use of Gas," is in course of preparation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Technical Gas-Analysis: Containing Concise Instructions for Carrying Out Gas-Analytical Methods of Proved Utility The field first opened out by Winkler has been very successfully cultivated by other chemists; and it is now quite usual, at any rate in Germany, to perform technical gas-analyses, not merely in chemical works, but for testing the efficiency of steam-boiler furnaces and such purposes. In England some of these pro cesses have also been introduced; but they are not as yet known and appreciated to the same extent as abroad. Hence it may not be unwelcome to English chemists to have a translation of a short treatise, just published by Winkler, which is primarily intended for teaching purposes - that is, for the use of teachers and students in public laboratories - but which likewise serves as a guide and handy book to other chemists wishing to make themselves acquainted with the subject. This treatise is not intended, as was its predecessor, to furnish a complete enumera tion of all apparatus hitherto proposed for technical gas-analysis, but merely to give representative examples of each kind of apparatus, embracing all the divisions of this branch of Chemistry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here in one source is a wide variety of practical, everydayinformation often required by chemists but seldom found together,if at all, in the standard handbooks, data collections, manuals, and other usual sources. Discussing physical, chemical, andmechanical properties of substances and systems, the authors answersuch questions as: * How do I test for and destroy peroxides in different solventsand what is the best way to purify such solvents? * What are the structure, physical properties, and recentreferences to the use of common-name solvents and solvent aids suchas the "Skellysolves," "Cellosolves," "Crownanes," and"Glymes"? * What is the utility of a particular molecular sieve, orpermeation gel, or epoxy cement, or liquid crystal, and where do Ibuy them and find references to their application? The book is divided into nine chapters and covers properties ofatoms and molecules, spectroscopy, photochemistry, chromatography, kinetics and thermodynamics, various experimental techniques, andmathematical and numerical information, including the definitions, values, and usage rules of the newly adopted International Systemof Units (SI Units). A section on statistical treatment of datawhich provides an actual least-squares computer program is alsoincluded. In the spectroscopy chapter, very extensive andup-to-date collections of spectral correlation data are presentedfor ir, uv-vis, optical rotation, nmr, and mass spectra, along withdata on esr and nqr spectroscopy. Also included is a variety ofhard-to-classify but frequently sought information, such as namesand addresses of microanalysis companies and chemistry publishers, descriptions and commercial sources of atomic and molecular models, and safety data for hazardous chemicals. More than 500 keyreferences are also included, most of which are recent. There areimportant hints and definitions associated with the art as well asthe state of the art for the appropriate subjects. Also foundthroughout the book are about 250 suppliers and directions forobtaining special booklets or other material. Containing a wealth of useful information, The Chemist'sCompanion will be an indispensable guide for students andprofessional chemists in nearly all the chemical disciplines. Inaddition, it will provide for the teacher and student an unusualadjunct for use in a broad cross-section of chemistry courses.
