Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Garth Evans is a sculptor as capable of evoking intimacy and simplicity as he is of dealing with the monumental and the timeless. This complete survey of his unique career is long overdue, and reveals a wealth of innovative and powerful work, much of it previously unseen in print. As narratives of British sculpture are reconsidered, Evans is emerging as one of the most creative and influential artists to bridge the generation of Antony Caro and Philip King with that of Tony Cragg, Richard Deacon, Antony Gormley, Alison Wilding and Bill Woodrow. This investigation into Evans's hugely varied, visually eventful and challenging practice explores connections across geographies and timeframes as well as contextualizing major changes and new departures in his work. Garth Evans was born in Manchester in 1934 and settled in the USA at the midpoint of his career. He has exhibited widely in Europe and America since the early 1960s, and his work is represented in major public and private collections in Australia, Brazil, Portugal, USA and UK (including the Arts Council Collection, Leeds City Art Galleries, the British Museum, the V&A and Tate). Evans has been the recipient of numerous awards as well as holding a number of distinguished teaching positions. Since 1988, he has taught at the Studio School in New York City where he is head of sculpture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With poems composed over five decades, but predominantly for his 2016 Ashland University MFA thesis of the same title, Again with the Light is a collection drawn from an entire life. It comes, first, from a childhood on the autistic spectrum, improperly diagnosed, in which a fascination with forests, trees, birds, water, and rough pathways of the literal and metaphorical kind provide a landscape of imagery for the whole. Increasingly, an attraction toward Christ leads through numerous permutations of faith and various Christian communities to Eastern Orthodoxy, an earthy, unearthly place with a connection to kenosis and theosis. Along the way come lives of saints and prosodic experiments in a postmodern but reachable style.

In 1972, he teamed with Bill Hicks and Jim Watson to form the nontraditional string band the Red Clay Ramblers. Mike Craver joined in 1973, and Jack Herrick in 1976. Over time, musicians including Clay Buckner, Bland Simpson and Chris Frank joined Tommy, who played with the band until 1994. Drawing on interviews and correspondence, and the personal papers of Thompson, the author depicts a life that revolved around music and creativity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In America as Empire, Jim Garrison urges us to face up to the complexities and responsibilities inherent in the indisputable fact that America is now the world's single preeminent power. "America", Garrison writes, "has become what it was founded not to be: established as a haven for those fleeing the abuse of power, it has attained and now wields near absolute power. It has become an empire." Garrison traces the roots of the American empire to the very beginnings of the republic, in particular to the historic willingness of United States' to use military might in the defense of two consistent --- if sometimes contradictory --- foreign policy objectives: protection of American commercial interests and promotion of democracy. How long can the American empire last? Garrison looks at American history within the context of the rise and fall of empires and argues that the U. S. can gain important insights into durability from the Romans. He details the interplay between military power, political institutions, and legal structures that enabled the Roman empire at it's apogee to last for longer than America has as a country. But the real question is, what kind of empire can and should America be? As the sole superpower, America must lead in shaping a new global order, just as after World War II Roosevelt and Truman took the lead in shaping a new international order. That international order is now crumbling under the pressures of globalization, persistent poverty, terrorism and fundamentalism. Garrison outlines the kinds of cooperative global structures America must promote if its empire is to leave a lasting legacy of greatness. Garrison calls for Americans to consciously see themselves as a transitional empire, one whose task is not to dominate but to catalyze the next generation of global governance mechanisms that would make obsolete the need for empire. If this is done, America could be the final empire.
