Book excerpt: This volume offers the transliteration, translation and selected copies of over 600 administrative documents on the textile industry in the Ebabbar temple at Neo-Babylonian Sippar. The documents are mostly divided in accordance with the former discussion presented in OBO 218. Indices provide the names of garments and fabrics, and the paleography will allow the reader easy comparison when identifying new texts in the future.

Book excerpt: Textiles comprise a vast and wide category of material culture and constitute a crucial part of the ancient economy. Yet, studies of classical antiquity still often leave out this important category of material culture, partly due to the textiles themselves being only rarely preserved in the archaeological record. This neglect is also prevalent in scholarship on ancient Greek religion and ritual, although it is one of the most vibrant and rapidly developing branches of classical scholarship. The aim of the present enquiry is, therefore, to introduce textiles into the study of ancient Greek religion and thereby illuminate the roles textiles played in the performance of Greek ritual and their wider consequences. Among the questions posed are how and where we can detect the use of textiles in the sanctuaries, and how they were used in rituals including their impact on the performance of these rituals and the people involved. Chapters centre on three themes: first, the dedication of textiles and clothing accessories in Greek sanctuaries is investigated through a thorough examination of the temple inventories. Second, the use of textiles to dress ancient cult images is explored. The examination of Hellenistic and Roman copies of ancient cult images from Asia Minor as well as depictions of cult images in vase-painting in collocation with written sources illustrates the existence of this particular ritual custom in ancient Greece. Third, the existence of dress codes in the Greek sanctuaries is addressed through an investigation of the existence of particular attire for ritual personnel as well as visitors to the sanctuaries with the help of iconography and written sources. By merging the study of Greek religion and the study of textiles, the current study illustrates how textiles are, indeed, central materialisations of Greek cult, by reason of their capacity to accentuate and epitomize aspects of identity, spirituality, position in the religious system, by their forms as links between the maker, user, wearer, but also as key material agents in the performance of rituals and communication with the divine.

Download or read book The Garment Of God written by David Jones and published by Bethel Community Church. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone has a specific garment that God has prepared for them to wear. From the begining of time God has ordained that his people would wear a special item of clothing. It would be unlike anything else worn in the whole of God's creation and was only to adorn those who belonged to him. The prophets would write about this garment, the psalmist would sing about it, and the patriarchs would wear it. Every book of the Bible has something to say about the garment of God. The garment will be worn by those who are anointed and favoured by God. It clothes priests and kings, servants and leaders. Brides and warriors are to be wrapped up in its protection and power. Jesus expects his people to wear these clothes. It is time for everyone to put on the garment of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Built upon the flourishing study of costume, this book analyses sartorial evidence provided both by texts of the ancient Near East and the Hebrew Bible. The essays within lend clarity to the link between material and ideological, examining the tradition of dress, the different types of literature that reference the tradition of garments, and the people for whom such literature was written. The contributors explore sources that illuminate the social, psychological, aesthetic, ideological and symbolic meanings of clothing. The topics covered range from the relationship between clothing, kingship and power, to the symbolic significance of the high priestly regalia and the concept of garments as deception and defiance, while also considering the tendency to omit or ignore descriptions of YHWH's clothing. Following a historical sequence, the essays cross-reference with each other to create a milestone in biblical sartorial study.

Download or read book All Things Lovely written by Jenn Johnson and published by Worthy Books. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Take the first steps to living as a healthier and happier woman and discover the spiritual importance of acceptance, gathering, and community. Jenn Johnson has come to realize that the pursuit of perfection is unrealistic and unfair. Instead, we need to pause and reflect on what's in front of us. But how? How can we slow down? How can we remain focused on what's important and do things with intention? What can we pursue that represents God's heart for us, things that are true, noble, right, pure, admirable, excellent, praiseworthy? By pursuing all things "lovely." Living a holistic and holy life, a life marked by beauty and truth, means being mindful and intentional about what we put in our bodies, how we present ourselves to the world, the spaces we create, and the people we let into our lives. When we set our minds on what is lovely, we begin to see ourselves and the world as God intended. We begin to be wholly renewed.

Book excerpt: Divinely Dressed: Putting on Garments of Grace is a spiritual makeover; a transformative journey for God's woman to find her true identity in Christ; to see herself through His eyes, and to exchange the old clothes of the world for garments so full of grace that the image of His glory will radiate from her life onto those around her. "...you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator." Colossians 3: 9-10Using Paul's letter to the Colossians as a guide, this eight-lesson study will shepherd those seeking individually or together in groups, through the important steps involved in setting aside the tattered, worn fashions which may not flatter the Christ-life, and replace them with qualities that compliment her so much better. She will learn who she is in Christ, and what garments best represent her identity in Him. She will discover how to put on the graces of Christ that will better serve to protect, identify, and beautify the woman she was created to be. She will walk away from this beauty consultation transformed, with a refreshed wardrobe that unmistakably reveals her identity as a daughter of the King.
