Book excerpt: "In early '79 I was already engaged in what eventually turned out to be a lengthy photographic study of the New Romantics (though back then they were not known as such). I'd been documenting this nascent scene in the Soho nightclub 'Billy's' and, one evening, a group of about half-a-dozen skinheads turned up. They saw me taking photographs and one of them, a guy called Wally, asked me if I'd like to take some photos of them too. They seemed pretty friendly and not at all camera shy. I took a few snaps, we got talking and Wally suggested I go with the whole gang on one of their Bank Holiday jaunts to the seaside. That was what led, eventually, to five years of photographing skinheads. In those five years I got to know some of the skinheads quite well and liked many of them." Derek Ridgers All the photos were taken between 1979 - 1984 in either London or nearby coastal towns. Over 100 photos including 32 pages of colour.

Cate Blanchett reflects on the differences between acting on stage and in film; Marina AbramoviÐ discusses her most radical piece of performance art; Annie Lennox reminisces about London in the 1970s; Carrie Mae Weems discusses the relationship between race and photography —these and other conversations are further brought to life by Huerta Marin’s candid, intimate Polaroid images. These photographs, which allow readers to lock eyes with their subjects, reflect the natural tone of each conversation, allowing the reader rare insight into the lives of these renowned artists. Inspiring and revealing, this collection of interviews and photographs gives readers an unparalleled connection with some of the most fascinating women working in the arts today.

Later, as he's drying out his suit and shoes, the news comes through that Tony Nolan – his mother’s ex-husband – has died of a sudden heart attack. Alex wonders if the universe is urging him to resolve a long-running feud with his environmentalist brother Matthew, and with the Wolds and the Nolans all heading back to Warwickshire for Tony’s funeral he now has an opportunity to do just that. But he finds Matthew as angry as ever, unable to relinquish his obsession with Caitlin, Tony’s troubled daughter, whose actions force both families to take an uncomfortable journey into the past. In Midland, the acclaimed novelist James Flint carries out a devastating exploration of what binds families together, and what tears them apart.

In this gripping expose, Marjorie Morrison, takes readers behind the lines to show us the crisis facing our military's mental healthcare system. When Morrison left her thriving private psychology practice for a three-month assignment at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, she hoped she would make a difference in the lives of Marines. She had no idea that it was she who would be changed. Those three months grew into a yearlong project, but the more Morrison tried to do her best for them, the more roadblocks she met. Despite the broken system, she was and is determined to help protect service member's mental health. The Inside Battle offers readers a glimpse into the current crisis through Morrison's personal experience and empowers them to make a difference in the lives of the men and women of the military. Marjorie Morrison has helped me to see that we have the power, the knowledge and most importantly the responsibility to protect each and every person who raises their hand and swears to protect our country. It is our duty as civilians ¦to fight for the men and women who fight for us. We know today how to support people before the stress happens so they don't have to come home broken. Debbie Ford N.Y. Book excerpt: Electronic dance music was once the utopian frontier of pop culture. But three decades after the acid house 'summer of love', it has gone from subculture to the global mainstream. Does it still have the same power to inspire? From the pleasure palaces of Ibiza and Las Vegas to 'new frontiers' like Shanghai and Dubai, raving is now a multi-million-dollar business. But there are still hardcore believers upholding its DIY ethos - the techno idealists of Berlin and Detroit and the queer subcults of New York, the post-apartheid party people of South Africa and the outlaw techno travellers of France. In Rave On, Matthew Collin travels the world to experience these unique scenes first-hand, talk to the key players and hear the story of how dance culture went global - and find out if its maverick spirit can survive its own success.
