Book Synopsis Living in a Garden by : Timothy Auger
Download or read book Living in a Garden written by Timothy Auger and published by Editions Didier Millet. This book was released on 2013 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 1963, Singapore’s prime minister planted a tree to mark the beginning of a sustained campaign to enhance the city state’s appearance. No one could have anticipated the transformation that followed. This is the story of that process. Now, 50 years later, highly urbanized Singapore enjoys a green network of nature reserves, large and small parks, tree-lined streets and community gardens that is the envy of other big cities. Singapore has had to make tough decisions. Land is scarce. There are trade-offs between maintaining the island’s rich, natural biodiversity and public demands for housing and infrastructure appropriate to the 21st century. Nevertheless, the National Parks Board, and its partners in the public, private and civic sectors, continue to strive to keep Singapore green. Lavishly illustrated, the book shows how Singapore aims to be a ‘City in a Garden’, reminding us that the community must engage with the greening ‘mission’, if this great achievement is to continue.

Download or read book Singapore: City of Gardens written by William Warren and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-27 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although best known as a sprawling metropolis, most visitors to Singapore marvel at the greenness of it all. Wide boulevards shaded by venerable Rain Trees, interconnecting parks displaying a huge variety of tropical plants, roadside plantings in every shade of green, red and yellow, and great expanses of junglescape alongside the office skyscrapers and apartment blocks. It is truly a garden city, in all senses of the word. In this travel pictorial, the authors showcase many of the Lion City's green spaces, be they the Botanical Gardens and national parks, or plantings of bougainvillea tumbling down the crash-barriers on the super-highways. Orchard Road, the world-renowned Zoological Gardens, the ground-breaking Mandai Orchid Gardens, and many more, are portrayed, along with other lesser-known parks and private and hotel gardens. Sumptuous full-colour photographs by Luca Invernizzi Tettoni and texts by botanical expert William Warren literally take one down the garden path on a discovery tour of Singapore's cityscapes, landscapes, hardscapes and few remaining "wild-scapes."

Book excerpt: This volume brings together new scholarship by Indonesian and non-Indonesian scholars on Indonesia’s cultural history from 1950-1965. During the new nation’s first decade and a half, Indonesia’s links with the world and its sense of nationhood were vigorously negotiated on the cultural front. Indonesia used cultural networks of the time, including those of the Cold War, to announce itself on the world stage. International links, post-colonial aspirations and nationalistic fervour interacted to produce a thriving cultural and intellectual life at home. Essays discuss the exchange of artists, intellectuals, writing and ideas between Indonesia and various countries; the development of cultural networks; and ways these networks interacted with and influenced cultural expression and discourse in Indonesia. With contributions by Keith Foulcher, Liesbeth Dolk, Hairus Salim HS, Tony Day, Budiawan, Maya H.T. Liem, Jennifer Lindsay, Els Bogaerts, Melani Budianta, Choirotun Chisaan, I Nyoman Darma Putra, Barbara Hatley, Marije Plomp, Irawati Durban Ardjo, Rhoma Dwi Aria Yuliantri and Michael Bodden.

Book Synopsis Singapore’s Park System Master Planning by : Raffaella Sini
Download or read book Singapore’s Park System Master Planning written by Raffaella Sini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the evolution of Singapore’s parks system, from colonial to present times. Further, it contextualizes the design and planning of parks in the general discourse on western and eastern traditions: early twentieth century western conceptions ‘imported’ during colonialism; modernism; postmodernism, and the contemporary ecological debate. Park system planning products respond to national policies and result in structural urban elements and a range of park types. Global (western ideology) and local issues have influenced park system planning and the physical design of individual parks over time. However, in Singapore the eastern literature has not addressed the development of parks and urban green spaces in terms of historical perspective. The publication reveals the interrelations between visual representations and changing political ideologies. Singapore’s system of public parks is shown to represent an iconography created by the state. Its set of constructed narratives elucidates on the potential social, cultural and environmental roles of public parks. However, Singapore’s park system presents a novel paradigm for expanding Asian cities, characterized by evolving urban imaging strategies. In framing Singapore’s case study within the broader perspective of eastern applications of western planning and design practices, and constructions of nation in post-colonial countries, the manuscript establishes the contribution of the Singaporean model of design and planning of parks to the international debate.
