Book Synopsis Gardens of Illusion by : Franklin Hamilton Hazlehurst
Download or read book Gardens of Illusion written by Franklin Hamilton Hazlehurst and published by Vanderbilt University Press (TN). This book was released on 1980 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: André Le Nostre, the son and grandson of royal master gardeners, was the most influential landscape architect of his time. In this definitive study, Professor Hazlehurst shows how his style developed from a complex of influences: his family background, the classic tradition, French rationalism, and the theories of landscape design propounded by Jacques Boyceau and Claude Mollet. He also traces the impact of Père Niceron, Salomon de Caus, and Simon Vouet on Le Nostre's understanding of the principles of perspective and optical foreshortening. By careful analysis of the sites where Le Nostre is known to have worked, among them Vaux-le-Vicomte, Fontainebleau, the Tuileries, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Versailles, Chantilly, Meudon, and Saint-Cloud, Professor Hazlehurst illustrates his skillful use of optical illusion to introduce vitality and surprise into otherwise coldly formal compositions. More than 370 photographs, plans, and elevation drawings, some in color, are included to show how these illusions were created. Garden of Illusion, the first book-length study of André Le Nostre to appear in almost twenty years, provides important new insights into the practice of landscape gardening not only in France but in the Western world. -- Jacket.
Book Synopsis Imperial Illusions by : Kristina Kleutghen
Download or read book Imperial Illusions written by Kristina Kleutghen and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Forbidden City and other palaces around Beijing, Emperor Qianlong (r. 1736-1795) surrounded himself with monumental paintings of architecture, gardens, people, and faraway places. The best artists of the imperial painting academy, including a number of European missionary painters, used Western perspectival illusionism to transform walls and ceilings with visually striking images that were also deeply meaningful to Qianlong. These unprecedented works not only offer new insights into late imperial Chinas most influential emperor, but also reflect one way in which Chinese art integrated and domesticated foreign ideas. In Imperial Illusions, Kristina Kleutghen examines all known surviving examples of the Qing court phenomenon of scenic illusion paintings (tongjinghua), which today remain inaccessible inside the Forbidden City. Produced at the height of early modern cultural exchange between China and Europe, these works have received little scholarly attention. Richly illustrated, Imperial Illusions offers the first comprehensive investigation of the aesthetic, cultural, perceptual, and political importance of these illusionistic paintings essential to Qianlongs world. Book Synopsis The Psychological Appeal of Gardens by : Clive R. R. Hollin
Download or read book The Psychological Appeal of Gardens written by Clive R. R. Hollin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This insightful book explores the relationship we have with gardens and with the act of gardening, considering in detail the psychological, social and health benefits. From the Garden of Eden and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon to Kew Gardens and the humble suburban plot, it is self-evident that gardens and gardening have an ever-present attraction. This book addresses the appeal of gardens from a psychological perspective: Why do we spend our cash on plants and gardening paraphernalia and give hours of our time to tending our annuals, bulbs and shrubs? Why do we travel to see gardens in our own and other countries? The theme of this book lies in identifying the individual and social rewards to be found in gardens and gardening, particularly within our own private gardens. The Psychological Appeal of Gardens will be of great interest to students and scholars of applied psychology, as well those taking horticultural courses of various levels, from professional horticulturalists to enthusiastic amateurs.
Book Synopsis Folk Illusions by : K. Brandon Barker
Download or read book Folk Illusions written by K. Brandon Barker and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-22 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[A] well-researched and well-written book . . . linking traditional folklore studies to current scientific research and to thinking about human behavior.” —American Journal of Play Wiggling a pencil so that it looks like it is made of rubber, “stealing” your niece’s nose, and listening for the sounds of the ocean in a conch shell—these are examples of folk illusions, youthful play forms that trade on perceptual oddities. In this groundbreaking study, K. Brandon Barker and Claiborne Rice argue that these easily overlooked instances of children’s folklore offer an important avenue for studying perception and cognition in the contexts of social and embodied development. Folk illusions are traditionalized verbal and/or physical actions that are performed with the intention of creating a phantasm for one or more participants. Using a cross-disciplinary approach that combines the ethnographic methods of folklore with the empirical data of neuroscience, cognitive science, and psychology, Barker and Rice catalogue over eighty discrete folk illusions while exploring the complexities of embodied perception. Taken together as a genre of folklore, folk illusions show that people, starting from a young age, possess an awareness of the illusory tendencies of perceptual processes as well as an awareness that the distinctions between illusion and reality are always communally formed. “With clear focal points, sound and carefully explained methodology, and thought-provoking, substantial analysis, this book makes an excellent contribution to children’s folklore and related fields.” —Elizabeth Tucker, author of Children’s Folklore: A Handbook “A compendium of perceptual illusions, gathered from performers across the country, sorted into formally related perceptual categories, and analyzed under various theories of perception.” —Journal of Folklore Research

Book Synopsis Illusion, Disillusion, and Irony in Psychoanalysis by : John Steiner
Download or read book Illusion, Disillusion, and Irony in Psychoanalysis written by John Steiner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-22 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illusion, Disillusion, and Irony in Psychoanalysis explores and develops the role of illusion and daydream in everyday life, and in psychoanalysis. Using both clinical examples and literary works, idealised illusions and the inevitable disillusion that is met when reality makes an impact, are carefully explored. Idealised phantasies which involve a timeless universe inevitably lead to disillusion in the face of reality which introduces an awareness of time, ageing, and eventually death. If the illusions are recognised as phantasy rather than treated as fact, the ideal can be internalised as a symbol and serve as a measure of excellence. Steiner shows that the cruelty of truth needs to be recognised, as well as the deceptive nature of illusion, and that relinquishing omnipotence is a critical and difficult developmental task that is relived in analysis. Illusion, Disillusion, and Irony in Psychoanalysis will be of great use to the psychoanalyst or psychotherapist seeking to understand the patient’s withdrawal into a phantasy world, and the struggle to allow the impact of reality.
