Book Synopsis Sacred Heart Devotion by : Franziska Metzger
Download or read book Sacred Heart Devotion written by Franziska Metzger and published by Böhlau Köln. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an innovative, pluri-disciplinary approach this volume focuses on how memory in Sacred Heart devotion is created, promulgated and transformed. The volume with contributions by historians, theologians, religious scientists and art historians links the dimension of memory to that of iconography, language, body and ritual practices and sheds light on adaptations, transfers, contestations and variations in a perspective of longue durée from the late Middle Ages to the present. The first part of the volume develops central axes of analysis, which are specifically investigated in the two following parts. The contributions of part two intertwine perspectives of cultural, social and art history focusing on the multi-layered creation, public presence and political usage, diversity and variations of Sacred Heart iconography and devotion in a long-term perspective. In-depth analyses centre on late medieval northern Italy, early modern France and 18th-century Switzerland (Eidgenossenschaft), on France from the 1950s to the 1980s, and on Indonesia in the 20th and 21st centuries. In a dynamic way, the third part combines systematic theological, philosophical and didactic reflexions on the Sacred Heart with a focus on imagination, embodiment, spirituality and memory.

Book Synopsis The Vincentians: A General History of the Congregation of the Mission by : John E. Rybolt
Download or read book The Vincentians: A General History of the Congregation of the Mission written by John E. Rybolt and published by New City Press. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE SUBTITLE OF THIS VOLUME is “An Era of Expansion, (1878–1919).” It reflects the reality of the Congregation of the Mission under the leadership of Antoine Fiat, the superior general who governed the Community longer than St. Vincent de Paul. Like the founder, Fiat was a man of both prayer and action. Also like the founder, Fiat was often hesitant and delayed final decisions. His confreres spread to new missions, such as the republics of Central America and Argentina, and several missions or provinces had grown large enough to be given more autonomy, such as the two American provinces, the Antilles, Barcelona, Ecuador, Belgium and Holland, Madagascar, and Colombia. China continued to attract many missionaries as well as local Chinese vocations despite war and unrest. This volume, then, relates not only that the Vincentians, members of the Congregation of the Mission, grew in number and influence, but how they exercised their ministry. Persecution was their lot in some regions, but they forged ahead. As always, they sought to align their ministries at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries with the original mission entrusted to them by the Church through Vincent de Paul: to bring the Gospel to the poor.
Download or read book War Time written by Louis Halewood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-06 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Society for First World War Studies’ ninth conference, ‘War Time’, drew together emerging and leading scholars to discuss, reflect upon, and consider the ways that time has been conceptualised both during the war itself and in subsequent scholarship. War Time: First World War Perspectives on Temporality, stemming from this 2016 conference, offers its readers a collection of the conference’s most inspiring and thought-provoking papers from the next generation of First World War scholars. In its varied yet thematically-related chapters, the book aims to examine new chronologies of the Great War and bring together its military and social history. Its cohesive theme creates opportunities to find common ground and connections between these sub-disciplines of history, and prompts students and academics alike to seriously consider time as alternately a unifying, divisive, and ultimately shaping force in the conflict and its historiography. With content spanning land and air, the home and fighting fronts, multiple nations, and stretching to both pre-1914 and post-1918, these ten chapters by emerging researchers (plus an introductory chapter by the conference organisers, and a foreword by John Horne) offer an irreplaceable and invaluable snapshot of how the next generation of First World War scholars from eight countries were innovatively conceptualising the conflict and its legacy at the midpoint of its centenary.

Book excerpt: Within Anglophone North America, the story of French Quebec is one of linguistic and cultural survival. This catalogue of books published in Quebec in French charts the evolution of the province's literary, social, artistic and political culture from 1764-1990. It includes all works published in Quebec, wholly or mainly in French, collected by the British Museum and Library from the 1830s to the present. Titles are listed under broadly-based subject sequences: Volume 1 covers French Quebec's creative and artistic output, as well as its conception of itself, as reflected in its philosophical and psychological works and encounters with other cultures. This second volume includes publications relating to Quebec's social and political institutions, history, social order and geophysical features. An introduction, in English and French, surveys the province's published output, and the history of its acquisition by the British Museum and Library.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteenth-century female congregation founders could achieve levels of autonomy, power and prestige that were beyond reach for most women of their time. With a subject hidden for a long time behind a curtain of modesty and mystery, this book recounts the fascinating but ambiguous life stories of four Belgian religious women. A close reading of their personal writings unveils their conflicted existence: ambitious, engaged, and bold on the one hand, suffering and isolated on the other, they were both victims and promotors of a nineteenth-century ideal of female submission. As religious and social entrepreneurs these women played an influential role in the revival of the church and the development of education, health care and social provisions in modern Belgium. But, equally well, they were bound to rigid gender patterns and adherents of an ultramontane church ideology that fundamentally distrusted modern society.
