Book excerpt: 'GANGWAY- a Life at Sea' is the story of the British Merchant Navy from its height in 1966 to its drastic slim-down by 1988, as experienced by the author in eleven shipping companies. GANGWAY reveals the stresses - and rewards - experienced by a young deck officer aboard a wide variety of cargo vessels. GANGWAY is an engaging mix of personal account and technical data. The author describes the social and working life aboard ships crewed by fifty men who enjoyed regular opportunities to explore life ashore during weeks in port. 'The Last Grain Race' described life at sea in the age of sail. 'Gangway - a Life at Sea' is a maritime memoir which describes the challenges faced by cadet, navigator and chief officer in the last age of the general cargo motor ship, before the age of the super ship.

A ship's gangway is the link between the hidden world of life at sea, over the horizon, and the world of life ashore. To climb up a gangway is to commit to the ship. To climb a gangway is to seek life beyond. To step down a gangway onto solid land is to give up an unspoken expression of thanks for the voyage safely completed, the biblical chaos of the waters survived. Book excerpt: It was a hot fine day in the middle of November 2003 in the very upper part of the mighty Amazon River in Iquitos Peru where I ended up living for 15 years, when I started to write on this autobiography, realizing that my life at sea had been extremely special in every aspect ever since I started at sea 1963 as a barely 16-year young teenager facing some weird events that would shape me for the rest of my future life at sea, and I was longing to see the real world before I die. Though I was not a writer the idea of writing this book emerged in a moment of great sadness in February 2002 In Antarctica when I started to think about how it could be, that I was commanding the 2398-ton The World’s First Expedition Cruise Ship MS Explorer [Lindblad Explorer] the “Ship in The Wilderness” and my destination was the Prince Gustav Sound in the Weddell Sea east of the Antarctic Peninsula in the Antarctic wilderness, when one of my passengers standing behind my back suddenly said: “This is really going to make the boys back at the golf club jealous”. To write about my own experiences feels kind of strange and from the start I knew that I was incapable of producing a strict biography of all the stunning account of adventures I have had and discoveries we made in those years onboard the Lindblad Explorer in the early 70 ́s as well as on the Explorer.

Book excerpt: Marty Leigh has wanted to go to sea ever since he was a boy growing up outside the Queen Victoria Markets. Despite his fathers misgivings and insistence that Marty learn a trade, Marty is determined to see his dream come true. When he is nearly seventeen, Marty takes the first step and signs up to be a deck boy. Now all he has to do is wait. Two weeks later, Marty receives a call that he is to set sail on the SS Barwon immediately. With his young heart beating wildly, his blood racing through his veins, and his suitcase held together with a leather strap, Marty climbs his first gangway and begins a new life. All the union asks of him is loyalty in exchange for dignity, strength, and close association with his own kind. As Marty attempts to acclimate to life at sea, he has no idea that one day far into the future, he will walk down his last gangway as a bitter, disillusioned man irrevocably changed by the sea. In this historical tale, a teenager embarks on a remarkable coming-of-age adventure where he quickly learns that it is not he who controls his destiny, but the sea.
