Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to conduct an exploratory examination of the attitudes of grade six children toward the playing of games, and toward rule changes that were made by the teacher or the children in these games. In order to conduct the study several instruments were developed: two Likert-type attitude inventories were constructed, the first dealing with children's attitudes toward the playing of games, and the second with children's attitudes toward the playing of games and rule changes. An open-ended interview schedule was compiled to supplement the attitude inventories. The sample consisted of 81 children from three grade six classes. Two classes from one school comprised the experimental groups and one class from another school was used as the control group. Prior to the treatment period the three classes were administered the "attitude toward the playing of games" inventory. For 12 consecutive lessons the control class participated in two traditional games and the experimental classes participated in two modified games where the teacher or the children made rule alterations. After the treatment period concluded the control class was readministered the "attitude toward the playing of games" inventory and the experimental classes received the "attitude toward the playing of games and rule changes" inventory. Interviews were also conducted with 12 children from the experimental classes. The pretreatment inventory data were subjected to alpha reliability procedures to help determine whether specific inventory statements could be grouped into a physical/ social or emotional category. A similar procedure was used for the experimental posttreatment inventory data with an additional fourth category, intellectual statements, included. Only those categories where the alpha coefficient reached .50 were accepted. A two-way analysis of variance was used to measure the Treatment Groups x Sex with repeated measures for the accepted pre and posttreatment categories pertaining to the playing of games. The Newman-Keuls procedure was utilized to compare mean differences between the three groups. The t-test method of analysis was used to examine differences between the mean scores of the experimental children on accepted experimental posttreatment categories. In all cases the level of significance was chosen at 5 percent. The findings indicated that the physical and social categories could be used to analyze the children's attitudes toward the playing of games. A significant sex difference was found regarding the social category with the girls indicating a more positive attitude toward the social aspects of playing games. Participation in the modified games did not change the attitudes of the experimental children toward the physical or social aspects of playing games. The physical, social and intellectual categories could be used to analyse the experimental children's attitudes toward the changing of game rules. There was a significant difference between the two experimental classes regarding the social aspects of changing rules. The majority of the interviewed experimental children indicated that they like playing modified games where rules could be changed, and their attitudes toward games had been favourably altered as a result of playing the modified games.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine how gender pairings affect performance and attitudes in a serious gaming task. By identifying factors that can improve performance and attitudes of middle school students in STEM, it is hoped that the gender gap can be minimized. Male-male pairs had the highest scores for game progress, but there were no statistically significant differences with regard to total achievements. Male-males rated their skill higher than female-females and all rated skill higher on the final rating. All groups rated challenge lower on the final rating. In terms of attitudes, for science and technology, there was a significant main effect for time, no main effect for condition, and no interaction effect such that ratings were higher (more positive) prior to the gameplay task. For collaboration, there was a significant main effect for condition (male-males higher than female-females), and a significant interaction effect: at pretest, no groups were significantly different, at posttest male-males were significantly higher than female-females and male-female and female-female groups had lower scores. This presents an opportunity to explore further implications for research and practice.

Book excerpt: Violent video games are immensely popular among children and adults, making it crucial to understand how these games affect the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of those who play them. The present research proposed an account by which video game effects are driven by elements of self involvement, affective responses, and motivated attitude change. According to this account, performing immoral behaviors in a virtual environment can cause an aversive affective response akin to cognitive dissonance. Players are motivated to reduce this aversive affect by shifting their attitudes to accommodate their immoral virtual behavior, increasing their tolerance of deviant behaviors overall. Importantly, such changes in affective responses and subsequent attitudes should be most likely if players believe their game play behavior was freely emitted and self-reflective. Accordingly, it was hypothesized that participants who believed they chose to play a violent video game would subsequently report greater tolerance toward deviant behaviors than those who were assigned to play a violent game or who played a non-violent game. Furthermore, these effects were predicted to be strongest among individuals high in private self-consciousness because they tend to reflect about themselves. Finally, it was hypothesized that affective responses to violent game play would mediate attitude outcomes in a manner consistent with dissonance reduction processes. A series of five experiments tested this account by manipulating the extent to which participants believed they freely chose to play a violent video game and measuring their subsequent attitudes toward deviant behaviors. A variety of approaches (including subjective reports and psychophysiological recordings) were used to measure aversive affect before, during, and following video game play. Across experiments, the effect of violent video games on attitudes toward behavioral deviance was moderated by selfinvolvement (perceived choice and private self-consciousness) and mediated by changes in affective responses consistent with dissonance. These results suggest acting immorally in a virtual world can shift a player’s moral compass, but the extent to which this happens is partially determined by how the player interprets the meaning of his or her own gameplay behavior. These results increase understanding of the circumstances under which video games have negative outcomes.

Of those 48.9 million people, 24.1 million Americans have a severe disability and 34.2 million have a functional limitation (Bernstein, 2012). The U.S. Government Accountability Office reports an increase in students with disabilities in the post-secondary population (Ridpath, n.d.). Approximately 11% of post-secondary students' report having a disability (Ridpath, n.d.). This trend has also been reflected within the athletic population at the NCAA Division I, II, and III level (Ridpath, n.d.). This study examined the average disability attitude of NCAA Division I athletes. The average disability attitude among NCAA Division I athletes was 73.99 out of 144. Recently, the physical and mental impact that video games have on video game players has been greatly researched (Oggins, & Sammis, 2012). It has been reported that 8% of U.S. adolescents and young adults are pathological gamers (Gentile, 2009). Additionally, it has been stated that video game play of over 20 hours per week is common, and that it is not unusual for males to engage in video games for over 40 hours per week (Bailey et al., 2010).?This study examined the average video gaming tendencies of NCAA Division I athletes. The data collected reports the average video gaming tendencies of athletes based on behavioral functions (attention, escape, tangible, and sensory) to be: Attention = 12.71, Escape 4.64, Tangible = 11.01, and Sensory 7.46.
