Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study assesses the significance of the hunting cult as a major element of the imperial experience in Africa and Asia. Through a study of the game laws and the beginnings of conservation in the 19th and early-20th centuries, the author demonstrates the racial inequalities which existed between Europeans and indigenous hunters. Africans were denied access to game, and the development of game reserves and national parks accelerated this process. Indigenous hunters in Africa and India were turned into "poachers" and only Europeans were permitted to hunt. In India, the hunting of animals became the chief recreation of military officers and civilian officials, a source of display and symbolic dominance of the environment. Imperial hunting fed the natural history craze of the day, and many hunters collected trophies and specimens for private and public collections as well as contributing to hunting literature. Adopting a radical approach to issues of conservation, this book links the hunting cult in Africa and India to the development of conservation, and consolidates widely-scattered material on the importance of hunting to the economics and nutrition of African societies.

Book excerpt: "The twenty-fourth annual summary by the United States Department of Agriculture of federal and other game laws and regulations is here presented to aid in the administration of the migratory-bird treaty act and the Lacey legislation for the use of law-enforcement officials, sportsmen, conservationists, and others. It is published to the end that the laws for the protection of game and birds shall be properly observed. The dates here shown for open seasons on migratory birds are the result of Federal and State legislation, the Federal regulations operating in many cases to shorten the seasons fixed by State statute. It is only by observing these dates that hunters can avoid violating either Federal or Sate law. Provisions relating to methods of capture, game refuges enforcement of laws, disposition of fees and fines, and matters of minor importance are omitted. These may be found by reference to the laws themselves, pamphlet editions of which some are obtainable in most of the States from proper officials ... Provisions relating to seasons, licenses, limits, possession, sale, and export, and a few miscellaneous matters are set forth under State an d other governments, alphabetically arranged, thereby furnishing a brief convenient synopsis of the laws.'"-- p.[2]

Book Synopsis Management and Welfare of Farm Animals by : John Webster
Download or read book Management and Welfare of Farm Animals written by John Webster and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-04-18 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through successive editions, Management and Welfare of Farm Animals has gained international recognition as a classic introductory textbook for students of agriculture and veterinary science. Conceived by the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW), the book has always sought to promote the humane treatment of livestock within the practical business context of modern farming. Now fully revised and updated, this fifth edition remains the most comprehensive and accessible guide available. Three animal groups appear here for the first time (game birds, South American camelids, and ostriches), and a chapter on horses has also been restored. Throughout, the book offers clear advice for the humane management of all major farmed species in the primary context of large-scale food production. However, this edition also takes full account of consumer demand (and legal requirements) for alternative farming methods and enhanced welfare standards, whether in conventional agriculture or the smallest of ‘hobby' farms. Brand new chapters reflect fresh understanding of welfare science, ethics, and the role of society in ensuring the best possible farm conditions. It remains an indispensable resource for students, and for all those seeking to promote animal welfare. Published as a part of the prestigious Wiley-Blackwell – UFAW Animal Welfare series. UFAW, founded 1926, is an internationally recognised, independent, scientific and educational animal welfare charity.
