In this story he describes the turmoil that enveloped James Morgan as a small child in Arkansas during the Civil War and how it took his father's life and the lives of five of his siblings. He follows James Morgan as he moves to Texas with his mother, leaving home at age ten to find his own way, and returning to Arkansas to grow up and marry. When his wife, Elizabeth Wolf, dies leaving him with a large family to rear, he returns to Texas, where he finds a new wife in Sarah Frances Spencer. James Morgan and Sarah move to Oklahoma Territory in the early 1890s, make their lives there and rear their own family. The author follows the children of James Morgan and Sarah as they grow up, marry, and eventually care for their aging parents. This is the story of an American pioneering family.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genealogists can sometimes require obscure resources when in search of information about ancestors. Tracking down records to complete a family tree can become laborious when the researcher doesn't know where to begin looking. Many of the best resources are maintained regionally or even locally, and aren’t widely known. This reference work serves as a guide to both beginning and experienced genealogy researchers. The sourcebook is easily accessible and usable, featuring approximately 270 entries on all aspects of genealogical research and family history compilation. The entries are listed alphabetically and cross-referenced so any researcher can quickly find the information he or she is seeking. Each state and each of the provinces of Canada has its own entry; other countries are listed under appropriate headings. The author also provides more than 700 addresses from all over the world so that the genealogist or general researcher may contact any one of these organizations to obtain specific information about particular births, deaths, marriages, or other life events in order to complete a family tree.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Goddard School Memories, author and historian Ginny Reeves tells the story of the Goddard, Kentucky, common school through its people, giving slices of life from the log field schools to the three-room school. The common school movement, widely regarded as the most significant reform in nineteenth century American education, was developed by Horace Mann of Massachusetts. Mann's goal was to provide free education to all, regardless of wealth, heritage, or class. His theme is from Proverbs 22:6: "Train up a child the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it." It was used at Goddard School every day. This comprehensive history of rural education in Kentucky details social, cultural, and educational events, giving state and local curriculum, contracts, teaching methods, textbooks, moonlight schools, and common school requirements. Goddard School Memories has many engaging anecdotes full of adventure, humor, and tragedy. The collection covers tales that range from daring discipline issues with naughty boys putting skunk oil in teachers' coat pockets, turning over outhouses, misplacing tombstones in the cemetery, taking boards from the schoolhouse, and making wooden pistols, to memories of box suppers, plays, and a musical performance by Tom T. Hall before he became a noted county music star, to the celebrated eighth grade graduation events at the neighboring Goddard Methodist Church, to the federal school lunch program that spurred the development of a lunchroom, the electrical wiring of the school, and the building of a cistern Genealogists will be delighted with a list of students who attended Goddard School, listing birth dates and parent names. Short biographies of many teachers are given. Goddard School Memories is a moving portrait of schoolroom stories that preserves the rich educational heritage of Fleming County, Kentucky. 238

This book was released on 1999 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With some 6,000 entries, A Bibliography of Tennessee History will prove to be an invaluable resource for anyone--students, historians, librarians, genealogists--engaged in researching Tennessee's rich and colorful past. A sequel to Sam B. Smith's invaluable 1973 work, Tennessee History: A Bibliography, this book follows a similar format and includes published books and essays, as well as many unpublished theses and dissertations, that have become available during the intervening years. The volume begins with sections on Reference, Natural History, and Native Americans. Its divisions then follow the major periods of the state's history: Before Statehood, State Development, Civil War, Late Nineteenth Century, Early Twentieth Century, and Late Twentieth Century. Sections on Literature and County Histories round out the book. Included is a helpful subject index that points the reader to particular persons, places, incidents, or topics. Substantial sections in this index highlight women's history and African American history, two areas in which scholarship has proliferated during the past two decades. The history of entertainment in Tennessee is also well represented in this volume, including, for example, hundreds of citations for writings about Elvis Presley and for works that treat Nashville and Memphis as major show business centers. The Literature section, meanwhile, includes citations for fiction and poetry relating to Tennessee history as well as for critical works about Tennessee writers. Throughout, the editors have strived to achieve a balance between comprehensive coverage and the need to be selective. The result is a volume that will benefit researchers for years to come. The Editors: W. Calvin Dickinson is professor of history at Tennessee Technological University. Eloise R. Hitchcock is head reference librarian at the University of the South.

Fitzmaurice chronicles two decades of brutal murder inside the MAX-custody federal penitentiaries at Lompoc, California, and other Bureau of Prisons facilities. From Lompoc to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, and Florence, Colorado, to Marion, Illinois, Fitzmaurice reveals the backstory behind the brutal killings carried out in medieval fashion by deadly prison gangs and ruthless predators on the federal penitentiary circuit. Interlaced with humanity, humor, and compassion, Stories from the Old Yard is much more than regurgitated investigative reports—it captures the courage and heroism of the young men and women who risk their lives daily to protect one another and Convict Nation alike! Some of these BOP staff gave their lives in this mission, and Fitzmaurice pays them the tribute they earned by making the ultimate sacrifice! The afterword includes a sneak peek from book two, More Stories from the Old Yard!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this reissue of Tales from the Georgia Tech Sideline, former quarterback Kim King shares stories from his unique half-century involvement with Yellow Jackets football. As a child growing up in Atlanta, King watched Coach Bobby Dodd’s great Tech teams of the 1950s play in historic Grant Field. A highly recruited high school quarterback, King went to Tech and became the star quarterback from 1965–67. “The Young Left-Hander,” as late Tech radio announcer Al Ciraldo called King, led the Jackets to two bowl games and was Bobby Dodd’s last quarterback before he retired after the 1966 season. King’s involvement with Tech football did not end with his graduation. In 1974 he joined Ciraldo in the radio booth as Tech’s color commentator. In the book, he details Tech’s struggles after Dodd’s retirement; the colorful and turbulent Pepper Rodgers years; Bill Curry’s painful first coaching steps back at his alma mater before restoring Tech to prominence in the mid-’80s; and the two awful seasons Bobby Ross endured before the historic 1990 breakthrough, culminating in Georgia Tech’s fourth national championship. Following Bill Lewis’s disastrous tenure in the early ’90s, George O’Leary revived Tech football yet again before his controversial departure for Notre Dame led to Chan Gailey’s arrival on The Flats. Kim King saw many of the Jackets’ bowl victories and nearly 50 years of Tech football before his death in 2004. He shares those memories, along with his personal reminiscences of Tech players and coaches, triumphs and travails, in Tales from the Georgia Tech Sideline.
