Book excerpt: This is the first dictionary to identify, chart, and explain in context the many proper names and place names that enrich the poetry of William Butler Yeats and anchor that poetry to Ireland. In this guide, Lester I. Conner reveals the extraordinary depth of meaning in Yeats's work by identifying and elucidating its many geographical, historical, mythological, and literary references. He does this by including biographical information and useful cross-references to the poet's other works, unveiling sources that contribute to, among other aspects, the richness of the poet's most memorable characters - such as Anashuya, Crazy Jane, or Red Hanrahan. He provides etymological guides to the accepted spelling of Irish proper names and place names that Yeats favored, names that the poet often used in a very personal context, giving his work the strong sense of place for which it is noted.

Book excerpt: William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) was not only a major Irish poet, but also a playwright, theatre founder, politician and literary critic. In his early life, he immersed himself in Irish folk stories and mythology, which he would later weave so skilfully into his major poems and plays. He devoted himself to occult studies and philosophy, and he found dignity and significance in the land, people and history of his native Ireland. He was largely responsible for the Irish literary renaissance, for he encouraged his contemporaries to turn to the Irish past for their literary material. His works have generated volumes of critical commentary, and interest in his tremendous cultural contribution continues to grow. This reference book is a comprehensive guide to his life and work, and to the large body of scholarship that has been written about him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the books authored by Martin R. Delany (1812-1885), The Origin of Races and Color is perhaps the most obscure. Out-of-print until now, it has been available to the public only through select libraries. At the time of its publication in 1879, this valuable resource presented a bold challenge to racist views of African inferiority. Delany wrote in opposition to a developing oppressive intellectualism that used Darwin's thesis, "the survival of the fittest," to support its demented theories of Black inferiority. Skillfully blending biblical history, archaeology and anthropology, Delany offered evidence to the "serious inquirer" suggesting the first humans were African, and that these Africans were ". . . builders of the pyramids, sculptors of the sphinxes, and original god-kings. . . ." With such radical assertions, Delany advanced a model of ancient history that contradicted the very foundation of intellectual racism. He believed knowledge of one's past was essential, and that it could provide Black people with the regenerative force necessary to inspire their self-improvement. Were he alive today, Delany would certainly feel at home with the present generation of Africancentrists, especially since he developed and articulated so many of their arguments more than a century ago.
