Book Synopsis Stuffed Animals and Pickled Heads by : Stephen T. Asma
Download or read book Stuffed Animals and Pickled Heads written by Stephen T. Asma and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-05-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The natural history museum is a place where the line between "high" and "low" culture effectively vanishes--where our awe of nature, our taste for the bizarre, and our thirst for knowledge all blend happily together. But as Stephen Asma shows in Stuffed Animals and Pickled Heads, there is more going on in these great institutions than just smart fun. Asma takes us on a wide-ranging tour of natural history museums in New York and Chicago, London and Paris, interviewing curators, scientists, and exhibit designers, and providing a wealth of fascinating observations. We learn how the first museums were little more than high-toned side shows, with such garish exhibits as the pickled head of Peter the Great's lover. In contrast, today's museums are hot-beds of serious science, funding major research in such fields as anthropology and archaeology. "Rich in detail, lucid explanation, telling anecdotes, and fascinating characters.... Asma has rendered a fascinating and credible account of how natural history museums are conceived and presented. It's the kind of book that will not only engage a wide and diverse readership, but it should, best of all, send them flocking to see how we look at nature and ourselves in those fabulous legacies of the curiosity cabinet."--The Boston Herald.

Book Synopsis Rapeseed Breeding by : Surinder Kumar Gupta
Download or read book Rapeseed Breeding written by Surinder Kumar Gupta and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapeseed is an important oilseed crop belonging to Crucifereae family and grown in subtropical to temperate climate. Recent discoveries have caused the scientific community to respond positively by directing a greater amount of research towards increasing production and improving the quality of rapeseed oil. Today, the annual worldwide production is approximately 7.5 million tons on 4 million acres. Canola ranks 5th in the production of world's oilseed crops following soybean, sunflower, groundnut and cottonseed. Rapeseed Breeding fully explains the miraculous discoveries about the genetic material which have contributed to the growth of this important crop. With contributions from world-renowned researchers from North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, this book provides the first scientific reference for scientists interested in the further exploitation of this important crop. * Presents history, origin and evolution, breeding methods, practical applications of DNA markers, fingerprinting of cultivars, and conservation of rapeseed germplasm * Includes detail of different breeding purposes including breeding for improved oil and meal quality, breeding for winter hardiness, breeding for herbicides, and breeding for hybrid rape. * Provides analysis of ecology, usage, degeneration and application

Download or read book Rapeseed written by Monica White and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2016 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapeseed is the traditional name of a large winter or spring annual oilseed crop from the Brassicaceae family, and is related to mustard, cabbage, broccoli, among others. As one of the leading oilseed crops, rapeseed is primarily grown for its oil content. This book presents research on the chemical composition, production and health benefits of rapeseed. The first chapter reviews the literature on rapeseed/canola derived bioactive peptides with emphasis on strategic production and processing methods as well as antihypertensive, antitumor, hypocholesterolemic, and multifunctional properties. Chapter two summarizes recent advances on the extraction processes of rapeseed-derived protein and bioactive compounds and reviews the possibilities as well as the challenges that these ingredients face regarding skin care, food and nutraceutical applications. Chapter three examines physical properties of fat filling produced with oil industry by-products - sunflower and rapeseed lecithin in comparison with widely used emulsifier- soy lecithin. Chapter four provides a comprehensive summary about contribution of mass spectrometric methods to analysis of rapeseed, reflecting their irreplaceability to the field of "Food control." The final chapter studies antioxidant activity in transgenic canola plants grown in vitro.
