Book excerpt: The private working land base of America's forests is being converted to developed uses, with implications for the condition and management of affected private forests and the watersheds in which they occur. The Forests on the Edge project seeks to improve understanding of the processes and thresholds associated with increases in housing density in private forests and likely effects on the contributions of those forests to timber, wildlife, and water resources. This report, the first in a series, displays and describes housing density projections on private forests, by watershed, across the conterminous United States. An interdisciplinary team used geographic information system (GIS) techniques to identify fourth-level watersheds containing private forests that are projected to experience increased housing density by 2030. Results indicate that some 44.2 million acres (over 11 percent) of private forests--particularly in the East, where most private forests occur--are likely to see dramatic increases in housing development in the next three decades, with consequent impacts on ecological, economic, and social services. Although conversion of forest land to other uses over time is inevitable, local jurisdictions and states can target efforts to prevent or reduce conversion of the most valuable forest lands to keep private working forests resilient and productive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Place in the Digital Age explores the history and impact of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and related digital mapping technologies in humanities research. Providing a historical and methodological discussion of place in the most important primary materials which make up the human record, including text and artefacts, the book explains how these materials frame, form and communicate location in the age of the internet. This leads in to a discussion of how the World Wide Web distorts and skews place, amplifying some voices and reducing others. Drawing on several connected case studies from the early modern period to the present day, the spatial writings of early modern antiquarians are explored, as are the roots of approaches to place in archaeology and philosophy. This forms the basis for a review of place online, through the complex history of the invention of the internet, in to the age of the interactive web and social media. By doing so, the book explores the key themes of spatial power and representation which these technologies frame. A History of Place in the Digital Age will be of interest to scholars, students and practitioners in a variety of humanities disciplines with an interest in understanding how technology can help them undertake research on spatial themes. It will be of interest as primary work to historians of technology, media and communications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A stirring story, much more humanly complicated than any Cooper had to tell, or indeed than has been told by previous historian. . . . Individual anecdotes Frzier has turned up might be the subjects of whole novels."--Boston Globe. "With extensive research in primary sources, Frazier's account deserves praise for its insights into the uncharted waters of eighteenth-century Indian history."--Choice "Immortalized by James Fenimore Cooper in The Last of the Mohicans, the Mohicans Indians originated in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Frazier, a specialist in Native American studies with the Library of Congress, presents a detailed, scholarly account of these Indians; he hopes to make his readers aware of the contributions they made to American history. He covers the Mohicans' conversion to Christianity and the ramifications this had for them. He examines the various ways they interacted with the settlers, both Dutch and New Englanders, in trading, and as soldiers and victims of expansion and alcohol. Frazier has done extensive research and uses solid documentation."--Library Journal "The calm suggestiveness of The Mohicans of Stockbridge makes it a model for future studies of native peoples."--Times Literary Supplement. Patrick Frazier has been employed by the Library of Congress since 1959, most recently as a reference specialist on North American Indians. His publications include Portrait Index of North American Indians in Published Collections and a forthcoming guide to North American Indian collections in the Library of Congress.
