Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Go-go is the conga drum–inflected black popular music that emerged in Washington, D.C., during the 1970s. The guitarist Chuck Brown, the "Godfather of Go-Go," created the music by mixing sounds borrowed from church and the blues with the funk and flavor that he picked up playing for a local Latino band. Born in the inner city, amid the charred ruins of the 1968 race riots, go-go generated a distinct culture and an economy of independent, almost exclusively black-owned businesses that sold tickets to shows and recordings of live go-gos. At the peak of its popularity, in the 1980s, go-go could be heard around the capital every night of the week, on college campuses and in crumbling historic theaters, hole-in-the-wall nightclubs, backyards, and city parks. Go-Go Live is a social history of black Washington told through its go-go music and culture. Encompassing dance moves, nightclubs, and fashion, as well as the voices of artists, fans, business owners, and politicians, Natalie Hopkinson's Washington-based narrative reflects the broader history of race in urban America in the second half of the twentieth century and the early twenty-first. In the 1990s, the middle class that had left the city for the suburbs in the postwar years began to return. Gentrification drove up property values and pushed go-go into D.C.'s suburbs. The Chocolate City is in decline, but its heart, D.C.'s distinctive go-go musical culture, continues to beat. On any given night, there's live go-go in the D.C. metro area.

Book excerpt: This book is a continuation of vol. I (Grundlehren vol. 115, also available in softcover), and contains a detailed treatment of some important parts of harmonic analysis on compact and locally compact abelian groups. From the reviews: "This work aims at giving a monographic presentation of abstract harmonic analysis, far more complete and comprehensive than any book already existing on the subject...in connection with every problem treated the book offers a many-sided outlook and leads up to most modern developments. Carefull attention is also given to the history of the subject, and there is an extensive bibliography...the reviewer believes that for many years to come this will remain the classical presentation of abstract harmonic analysis." Book excerpt: In complementarity theory, which is a relatively new domain of applied mathematics, several kinds of mathematical models and problems related to the study of equilibrium are considered from the point of view of physics as well as economics. In this book the authors have combined complementarity theory, equilibrium of economical systems, and efficiency in Pareto's sense. The authors discuss the use of complementarity theory in the study of equilibrium of economic systems and present results they have obtained. In addition the authors present several new results in complementarity theory and several numerical methods for solving complementarity problems associated with the study of economic equilibrium. The most important notions of Pareto efficiency are also presented. Audience: Researchers and graduate students interested in complementarity theory, in economics, in optimization, and in applied mathematics.

Book excerpt: This book deals mainly with the results of the authors' research devoted to both the study of the transport equation (the linear Boltzmann equation) and its applications in X-ray tomography. The introduction gives an outline of the book and deals with certain aspects of the methodology. The first part of the book is devoted to the investigation of known and new problems for the stationary transport equation of a general form. New problems are treated as problems of tomography. The second part deals with the monoenergetic transport equation. This book will be of interest to specialists in transport theory and tomography.

Book excerpt: This book presents new and original research in Statistical Information Theory, based on minimum divergence estimators and test statistics, from a theoretical and applied point of view, for different statistical problems with special emphasis on efficiency and robustness. Divergence statistics, based on maximum likelihood estimators, as well as Wald’s statistics, likelihood ratio statistics and Rao’s score statistics, share several optimum asymptotic properties, but are highly non-robust in cases of model misspecification under the presence of outlying observations. It is well-known that a small deviation from the underlying assumptions on the model can have drastic effect on the performance of these classical tests. Specifically, this book presents a robust version of the classical Wald statistical test, for testing simple and composite null hypotheses for general parametric models, based on minimum divergence estimators.
